I remember going to the Phillipsburg-Oseola Christmas wrestling tournament and going to a basketball game the night before the tournament. There were crickets in the stands... minus any living human beings. Then the next day, there were hundreds of crazy, zany and exuberant wrestling fans waiting in line to get in the gym... wringing towels in the stands as their favorite wrestlers took to the mat. That's WRESTLING fans... where ever you are.

When I was a Senior in HS, our basketball and wrestling teams were both great. One night our basketball team was playing an away game that would determine the league championship. Our wrestling team had a home match that would determine the league championship. The cheerleaders (who went to all the basketball games) refused to get on the bus. About 40-50 of our fans showed up at the basketball game. The wrestling meet had 2,100 in attendance.

Similar when I was in HS. SCHS had a really good bball team (I was few years behind the Parkhills) and the stands would be packed. We had a good but not great wrestling team and the stands would be packed and the floor would be full with kids sitting on the court right up to the edge of the mats. Thing were very different when we moved to MD when I was in 11th grade.

Similar when I was at Penn State :50 - :54. We had double headers with basketball. We would totally pack Rec Hall for wrestling and half the fans would leave for basketball until Jesse Arnelle started playing basketball. He was amazing and he energized us to stay for bb as well.

My boys' HS coach had to tell MrsPa to quiet down, because the wrestlers couldn't hear his instructions. Keep in mind, though, the gym's were mostly empty in west Tennessee, and she was the team photographer, usually parked on the edge of the mat, so it was pretty obvious who the guilty party was.

Hey, that could be Mrs. Roar, cheering-wise. She's turned into a solid fan :):):):):).

I think it is great that Mrs. Roar is a wrestling fan. My lovely wife doesn't know what to make of my obsession with following wrestling. The best I get out her during wrestling season is her jokingly asking if I'm watching some more of those men in tights! And for you parents who have or had children who wrestled, I am envious. And since grammar comments seem to pop up frequently on this Forum, envious, and not jealous, was the proper term to use. You are envious regarding something you don't have and jealous regarding something you do. ;)

My wife and her family don’t understand it either. They always say I’m watching boy on boy action.

My wife was a wrestling mom, so as long as it isn’t her child on the mat she enjoys watching. She is a middle school teachers aid and a few of her “kids” wrestle for our junior high team so we go to watch them.

There were 3 wrestlers in my family. We had at least one and sometimes two starters for 8 straight years, and my Mom never missed a HS dual meet. She saw more duals than my coach did, who was sick a couple of times. I was never sure if she understood one thing that was happening on the mat.

Where in west TN? I was at the opposite side of the state (Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett) and never made it to athletic events west of Knoxville. I loved UT basketball (the Bernie and Ernie show was the high point) and hated UT football (went to both the '71 and '72 games at Neyland Stadium).

Lived in Collierville, suburb of Memphis, for 13 years. There isn't a stitch of clothing in our house that comes close to UT orange, if that tells you anything.

All of our friends from down there are asking if we're coming to the Cotton Bowl.

Back in 84 the PO gym was a mad house when #4 State College went over the mountain and whooped #3 PO 33-12. Great event

The year of Koll/Sidorick match? I was there too. Of course both went on to state titles.
I think they even set up CC TV in the cafeteria for the overflow that night?

I have a friend who wrestled for Clearfield in the '50s. He showed me a newspaper article from a local paper at that time. The Clearfield-Bellefonte dual had to be moved to Rec Hall. They had over 5,000 in attendance. For a high school dual in 1958.
In the early '80s I saw the Downingtown-Great Valley dual from the cafeteria on closed circuit TV. And the cafeteria was crowded. No idea what the gym was like, cause I couldn't get that close.
