Visitor Parking

any tricks? Secrets? Suggestions?
It's a 3 hour drive for me to get to the stadium. On occasion, I get shuffled to the yellow lot cow field. It has taken me 3 hours a couple of times to get out of the parking lot, 3 frigging hours! This makes for a really long day for me. I've wrote letters to the ticket office about this but I think they just go in the circular file. PSU needs to do a better job getting people out of the lots rather than just have the parking attendants leave after the game. My suggestion, try to get a reserved number spot off the ticket exchange if possible.

We tailgate in Yellow Lot 12. It is, imo, the best general parking. These are IM fields, so it is flat with nice grass and has lights if you stay later in the day after the game to tailgate, which we do, and you also avoid most of the traffic if you hang out for an hour or two. If you park in Yellow, call the ticket office to get a pass at least two weeks prior to the game. They will mail it to you. Buying in advance is about 1/2 price what you pay at the gate.

The attendants are not allowed to do anything with traffic plus I can promise you that you do not want that crew to have anything to do with egress. Likely would make your 3 hour exit 4 hours.

Biggest issue is Park and rest of the road infrastructure within a few miles just were not meant to handle game day traffic.

Agree. It takes 10 of them to direct you 200 yds across a lot.

Question: If you do NOT have a parking pass, are there places to park and get a shuttle ride to the stadium ? Never did this before, but might need this route for an upcoming game(sPitt).

We usually go in thru Toftrees and Fox Hollow. The egress isn't as bad--but it does not always work--one time we got "directed" off Fox Hollow quite a bit back of lot 17 (I think near the National Guard building)--and ended up somewhere behind Lot 12. I'm still not 100% sure where. We were physically unable to leave the lot until about 4 am. I think they saw my wife's Ohio plates and stuck us there (it was the 2005 tOSU game).

Another time we came in on Fox Hollow, were taken around past 18, 20, and 21, were directed *across* Park, and I think we ended up in lot 25--in a lot that was already full (they wedged us in somehow). There were a number of comments about "crossing the streams" and that even Bill Murray knew not to do that.

There are other places no doubt but one I know of for sure is you can park on Rolling Ridge Dr. near Hills Plaza north of the Firestone shop. You can catch the shuttle right behind Firestone. I think you're allowed to park behind the Hills Plaza stores but not in the main lot. I don't know how strictly that's enforced. There is lots of room there and Hills has been closed for years. Edit: To clarify, I know for sure you can park on Rolling Ridge. Not sure about which parts of the lots you're allowed to park.

Egress in general was a disaster for the 2005 OSU game. That's the last game I attended and we were fortunate to score a green reserved pass from a friend. We were also unable to get out of the lot for several hours due to traffic, it was the biggest clusterf**k I've ever seen at any event I've ever been to. Completely unacceptable.

CATA game day shuttle generally works very well. We've used it many, many times. Biggest downside is possible wait in line for a bus after the game, especially if it's a nailbiter and nobody leaves early, but it's usually not too bad. The website hasn't been updated yet for 2017, but I doubt it'll change much:

I don't know what people expect. You have a 107,000 seat stadium in the middle of nowhere with basically one highway runner no through it. To make matters worse is the main access road to that highway must be kept open in both directions due to being the only access point to the hospital. When you have a night game and everyone is leaving at one time it is going to be a cluster. They are not going to spend millions even if they could to build additional highways for 1 game or even 7 games a year. Do you think a stadium in Pittsburgh or Philly could exit that many people quickly.

It getting out early is priority there are plenty of ways to do it. Showing up early to get the front of the lot is a huge help. There are plenty of lots with shutttles from downtown and Altoona. There are plenty of lots on campus and downtown that easy to get out. Penn State can only do so much in traffic management.

I don't expect to drive out immediately. But sitting in the car and not moving 10 feet for a matter of hours is a different story. With such limited infrastructure having people in the lots to direct traffic is probably a good idea for night games when everyone leaves at the same time.

I believe they run shuttles from the Fullington bus garage out by the airport. Drop you off at Porter Rd and Park Rd intersection. Not sure of the price.

I like this option to parking..so much easier and a faster way to get out of town.

They do there simply no room to move. You are going to sit. You have probably 100 lot exits into 3 lanes of traffic. Sometimes there just no place to go. Having people directing is not going to change that. Think of it as a funnel. The issue is not directing cars it capacity. Only so many cars can exit at once no matter how many people you have driving. If you are in the back of a lot you may have to sit. I been there and it frustrating. That why I don't like night games. I still attend them but park in alternative locations.

For getting in and getting out of a general lot quickly and painlessy, I'm a big fan of lot 23.. take College Ave exit off 322, makea right on Puddintown Road, left on Orchard and park in the lower lot. Up front of 23 isn't too far a walk from the stadium either. No traffic in and some limited traffic back out only for big games but most games we can take our time out of the stadium, have a beer after the game and drive right out.
