I know that the market driven blind forces of grasping evil have banished thread view so that 20-somethings can more easily scroll through this BS with their phones. I remember a few years ago hearing the prediction that with email and chat rooms and social media, we would be ushering in a revival of the written word.

Since then its Twitter, where you are limited to 140 characters, and a hundred other ways of quickly and without qualification (or much quality) saying something very briefly, and it turns out badly for the most part. The only writing style this will improve is cable-ese.

A year ago when Seth Williams was on Facebook running for BoT, someone took him on over some tweet he had made about Paterno or something in the JS affair. His explanation was that he was trying within the limits of 140 character to express a complex notion. I told him that as the DA of a major American City he needed to have the good sense to not try to express complex thoughts in 140 characters, especially since he was so bad at it. And that judgment was kind of important on the BoT. I did not receive a reply through any medium.

When you do not care whether you have communicated your thoughts accurately nor what anyone says in response to what you say, you can make it brief and incomplete and stupid and wrong. Who cares?
 
BTW, how come the little icon says "Back to Threads/Forum and not "Back to Topics?"

I am fine with the new set up. It is change for the sake of change, and has become more redundant with less chance for humorous replies, but this is what "innovations" in the digital world often are--limiting and constricting for the sake of more clicks or more profit at the expense of thoughtfulness and creativity. Imagine having a conversation with someone where before you could say what you wanted to say, you had to repeat what they just said first? Outside of stroke rehab and "listening therapy" in marriage counseling, it seems unduly limiting.

But as someone said here before, I am not paying money to visit this site. I am free to simply not visit--to do something more valuable with my time. Then it is not a problem at all.

The one thing we know for certain is it is not going to change, except perhaps further along the path we already see. We live in a world where your car has to tell you if your tires are underpressured or your f'ing windshield washer fluid is low. What happened to finding that out for yourself, like, by paying the F@ck attention once in a while?

I just don't see how if someone wants to make a humorous one liner it is any different in topic view. Now you can actually see where the humor is directed instead of basically guessing based upon previous posts. I would look through thread few a lot of times seeing who a random "jackass" comment was directed at. If you don't quote a person in thread view nobody can tell who you are even talking to.

Illinoislion was really good at it and funny but some people never responded to the right people.

Sounds like a plan. I think I'll binge on some ether. That should make communication with colleagues challenging. I'm really up for a challenge today.

The real issue, and the only true test of this, is the marketplace. What if average use of the site dwindles off by 40%, either because 40% fewer people are here or those who are here use it 40% less? Then what? Should be fun to watch. Something tells me that if it is a huge increase in traffic, we will hear that the marketplace has deemed it a success, but if there is a 40% fall off we will not be told anything at all, or will be told that it is right in line with their expectations.:)
 
It's really not a big deal at all. How set in stone are some of you that this change to a college sports message board is actually interrupting your life. Maybe it's best that 40% move on if this really is an issue for them.

Sadly or not so sadly for some here, my visits since the changeover have dropped off considerably. Who knows, maybe I will circle back around someday and become a regular again. I don't hesitate to embrace change if I like the change, LOL.

Well, I don't know what you know about humorous one-liners, or how to do them. So, there is that to consider.

I'm a conservative and agree with dem 100% on this subject. So hardly a liberal complaint.

Notice I did not say 150% or 1000% or 10000000%, as it is not possible to agree with someone more than 100%. Or to give more than a 100% effort at something. It is stupid of people to make those statements. Sorry, just a pet peeve.

Hey the change made something that was fun and turned it into something that is not fun. Why is that so hard to understand? People call that whinning, no it is expressing an opinion. Of course some people can not stand another having a different opinion than themselves. The outcome? We have seen a huge uptick in childish posts attacking other posters and information sharing on this board and the Lions Den has suffered. This change has been great! (tic)

I got it. I understand why you guys are all pissed off too. I've said that.

I do think some of the complaining is due do it being new maybe more than the actual complaints of humor being taken away. Being funny is being funny.

Agree that the market will respond, which will be the business bottom line.

Many posters have already expressed their reasons for why they like the stability and some new options. Many apparently don't like removing a major format option that added many benefits that were ranked by individuals far more highly.

LOL - From an individual standpoint, it may be like taking away the Family Thanksgiving Dinner, with lots of custom-made family favorites and replacing it with the "efficiency" of Pizza Boy delivery.

This reminds of the kind of "Ivory Tower" "dud" decisions that corporations have made, without asking the users what they valued the most. The techies may have loved "their" idea, but it wasn't valued by society.

A classic was the introduction of Corfam shoes. The "Ivory Tower" techies thought that the market most wanted shiny shoes that would last a long time, there-by creating great value for customers. So they created efficiently made synthetic leather shoes and sent them to the market. Turns out they did last a long time.

  • Its major advantages over natural leather were its durability and its high gloss finish that could be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Its disadvantages were its stiffness which did not lessen with wearing, its relative lack of breathability, and easy confusion with non-breathable cheaper products.

Many people who had choices, avoided them and overall, it was a market flop. It is still studied as a classic example of the problem of bad "Ivory Tower" decisions. The end result was the entire process was sold to a company in Communist Poland. They produced the shoes and forced them on their people, who had to live with the products crammed at them by their Command Economy, Central Committee decisions.

  • After spending millions of dollars marketing the product to shoe manufacturers, [the company] withdrew Corfam from the market in 1971 and sold the rights to a company in Poland.
  • Corfam shoes are still popular in uniformed professions where shiny shoes are desirable.

So, there is a select market for the products, but a large number of consumers prefer the "look and feel" of more natural forms. That's what drives their individual choices, more than the features the "Ivory Tower" tried to force on the masses, without first finding out what the market valued most.

  • Of course in the end, each individual can make their own choices and decide what is most important.
  • Time will tell how most individuals respond. Will they adopt what they like, or will they be stuck with what is forced upon them?

There is a lot of wisdom in those words, dem, and I agree. As a lawyer, I have always placed more value on the written word than many people and I am sad to witness the demise of something as basic as complete sentences.

That's the thing, Thread view was an OPTION. Some people liked one way, some liked the other. Some thought one way was "better", others had a different preference. It really wasn't about right or wrong, it was about choice. Why remove the option? Were the new features (whatever they are) harder to program for one view compared to the other? Just trying to understand.

I work in the IT industry and I guess I'm used to the people whining anytime the look or feel of a program changes. In time they get over it and go back to their usual griping. Change freaks people out and I've grown numb to it. If it's no longer fun for people I suggest they leave the site for another PSU football thread board that doesn't exist. If people really cared about the content or the community they would give it a chance. I can still read your comments now just as I could 2 weeks ago with no real issues at all.
