PSU women’s basketball team is at home and getting schooled by Stony Brook on BTN. We have a center who is so overweight that she has trouble lumbering up and down the court. Our usual run and put up a bad shot offense isn’t going to work against the visitors who actually pass the ball around and look for the open player. It’s painful, and will make your eyes burn, so I’d advise staying with the NFL this afternoon. I’d rather watch Saquon beat the Eagles. Stony Brook is up 28-11 with about 6 minutes remaining in the first half.

The only reason I can see for not firing Coach Washington is that they don’t want to commit any money into paying her plus a new hire. This program has become embarrassing. Her teams lack discipline and are fundamentally inept.

Wasn't she Big 10 Coach of the Year twice?
Yep. In 11-12 and 13-14. Her overall record at PSU is 197-149.

Way better results than the men’s team.

I went to their game this past week against North Dakota. Their post play is non existant with both centers very overweight. They also lack discipline with their shot selection. Good teams will destroy them. It is a shame how far they have fallen.

it seems like we used to be regularly a top 25 team and normally in the NCAA tournament. her best years are not even as good as what we would consider below par years in the past. she is getting a lot of slack.

when is she up for a new contract? when did she last get a new contract and for how long? if they don't want to pay a buyout, then just cut ties at next contract. we certainly do it with the mens coach position.

Might be better than mens team but she gets talented girls that she can't develop. A few years back Washington had 4 McDonald's all Americans on her team and did little with all that talent.

Not exactly true. She's won 3 Big Ten titles and made it to the NCAA tournament 4 times and the final 16 twice. A bit of a misrepresentation. Three of the last four years have been rough though. Also, PSU women's basketball has always been well supported and has a nice tradition. On a bit of a downswing now.

What a horrible game to watch today!! Wow is Washington a terrible coach.!!! Should of let her walk a few years back when Michigan wanted her and what did we do? Gave her a nice pay raise. Time for a change with this program. Way to much talent has come through her program with a couple of big ten titles and very little tournament success.

Washington was hired in 2007.

Penn State made the women’s NCAA tournament 25 times since 1982. (1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014). (4 in 11 years with Washington).

They’ve been to the sweet 16 thirteen times (2 with Washington), the elite 8 four times (0 with Washington) , and final four once (0 with Washington).

They’ve been conference tournament champs 8 times (0 with Washington). They were conference regular season champs 11 times, (3 with Washington).

Last 3 Coaches-
1. P. Meiser- (1974-1979)- 92-52 (.639)
2. R. Portland- (1980- 2006)- 606-236 (.720)
3. C. Washington- (2007-2018)- 197-151(.566)

Breaking down to just Big Ten (comparing like to like rather than A-10 or independent to big ten competition)-
1. Portland- 175-69 (.717)
2. Washington- 93-93 (.500)

They are keeping her for reasons unrelated to athletics. It’s a political decision. Period.

Rene's last two years were:

2005–06 Rene Portland 13–16 Big Ten 6–10 7th
2006–07 Rene Portland 15–16 Big Ten 7–9 5th

Washington righted the ship in her 3rd and 4th seasons. The next 3 seasons after that were good. Since then - not so much (16-17 was decent).

The program has really fallen off the radar. They used to have a decent following and generate some interest in the fan base. Now, most have no idea if they are even playing.
But AD's continue to throw money at so-called varsity sports that...at most schools...very few, if any, fans care about.

I agree with the reason they are keeping her and it's not for her on court success or personality.

The numbers are what they are.

I gave the totals as the last 3 coaches were all in State College long enough for a fair look at their whole PSU career (not just 1-2 years which would be an unfair comparison).

Between 1982 and 2006, Penn St missed the NCAA tournament 7 out of those 25 years.

Since Washington was hired in 2007- Penn St has missed the NCAA tournament 7 out of the 11 years.

I understand. I'm trying to give her as much benefit of the doubt as I can. We used to go to some of the women's basketball games. The last game I attended was the UConn game several years ago. I don't even think about Penn State women's basketball anymore, unless someone brings it up here. There is no buzz around here for it anymore, except for the Think Pink Game. It is not a good product right now.

As you know, we are not allowed to criticize Chambers on this board because he has recruited a few kids from Philly. ;)
We're from the same home town and I knew three of his brothers, two of them fairly well at one time in my life. It was many years ago. I've spoken with Pat in State College and he's a real personable guy. I stay on the sidelines on that one. That's why I said the other day that he only started in 2011 and deserves to have a trial period that last until 2031. ;)

I agree. I wasn’t trying to pick a fight (honestly ;)). I just wanted to list the numbers and let people discuss as they saw fit. People can honestly disagree on what they think should or shouldn’t be done.

I honestly don’t know what’s the right call on Chambers. I try to listen to all views as I think both sides have made good points over the years. My post about him recruiting Philly kids was TIC and just me being a smart a$$. :D

The WBB program regularly runs a deficit of 2-3 million every year. I don’t really expect them to make a profit, but definitely expect more from them given the resources at their disposal. I see very little team play from them. When they have an above average player or two they do well, but lacking that they do nothing well. That is coaching or the lack thereof. I wouldn’t fire CW, but at the end of her contract I would thank her for her service and look elsewhere for someone to lead the program. Right now the product on the court is unwatchable.
