There are more HBUCs that compete athletically outside of the SWAC than in the conference. By itself, the MEAC has more members than the SWAC. Of the SWAC schools, only Alabama A&M wasn't a member when it's HOFer John Stallworth played there.

Off the top of my head, Elvin Bethea played at NC A & T which is not a SWAC member. Yes, the SWAC produced a lot of great players....and then the ACC, SEC, and the SWC/Big 8/Big 12 (or at least the Texas part) integrated.
