Chuck Culpepper is not your typical sportswriter: creative, quirky, humorous, imaginative, irreverent, and sometimes irritating (especially when he goes after your favorite sports teams) but he is always readable. Here he discusses the history of the various bowl names. He is not infallible, however; he missed my all-time favorite: The Poulan Weedeater Independence Bowl. Oh, well; even Homer nods. Enjoy.

I would not be surprised if the announcers and producers had a contract obligation to repeat the Bowl name- with the sponsor’s name prominently first- at least a fixed number of times. Product visibility.
