...everyone sweat a lot. I'm not talking about the volleyball scene. Just the pilots sitting there getting their instructions for a mission, they're drenched. Everyone is sweating.

Did john zipay direct this movie?

"I don't know where I'll be then Doc, he said. But I won't smell too good, that's for sure."

One of the Scott bothers directed.

Should make you realize what a bad position our USN is currently in the with the lack of a true air to air combat fighter. And that the combat radius range of our sea based fighters continue to shrink since the retirement of the tomcat in favor of the the hornet and flawed lightning.

The F-18, and F-35 are more than capable a/a. Dogfights are a thing of the past. Everything today is radar and over the horizon.

Also do you think the Tomcat didn’t have to do aerial refueling? The combat radius of any carrier based fighter is as long as the pilot can bear to sit in the seat.

And NSD hasn’t even arrived yet...

The spring game can’t come fast enough.

I've watched that movie 100s of times, and am still a sucker for it if I'm tooling through the TV guide and see it playing. That said, there are no shortage of things that stand out in the movie.

While I never served in the Navy, and don't know their routines with regards to air coverage, I always found it odd that a US Navy ship ends up in enemy waters, and the air force carrier only sends up two planes, both of which are piloted by newbies that are just out of Top Gun school. And the only backup they have is one plane, which is also piloted by a newbie just out of Top Gun school. It makes for entertaining drama, but I can't think of any part of the aforementioned routine that makes any sense.

I could go on and on with Top Gun plot aspects that make no sense, but the above is the one that always makes me shake my head in disbelief.

yeah- it was very, very poorly done

Carriers don't go to sea without escorting destroyers and usually a cruiser- both ship types that have a LOT of firepower to protect the carrier. And BOTH catapults being down at the same time so they can't launch any planes? I've never heard of that happening, and I'd be willing to bet that it never has happened. That's the whole reason they have two- redundancy.

Of course anybody who can believe Tom Cruise as a warrior can probably believe anything.

One of my favorite myths to break for women involves Richard Gere. Whatever the movie was with Diane Lane set in the Outer Banks and a big storm hits and they lose power and yada yada yada. Despite not having power all night and when he wakes up first thing in the morning and still in bed, he's clean shaven!!! No beard growth overnight or all day for that matter. I point that out all the time to women. Watch a Richard Gere movie and watch how he wakes up in the morning, no five o'clock shadow, no beard growth, no stubble, clean shaven practically all the time.

While on subject of movies... I love watching Man on Fire but.... can someone explain why that kidnapping ring was bringing in millions and millions weekly and yet the boss' wife (well, sorta ex) and brother and just about everyone else was living is squalor?

appeared the boss (voice) had a nice home, but even that wasn't any great shakes when you're likely bringing in a mil per week clear.

i quibble.. thought DW was superb in that role and Walken was the perfect backup.

Had a friend in Top Gun, for a fleeting second during the bar scene. He was in Top Gun school during filming and ended up in that scene. I've never been able to ID him but everyone else I know says he is in it. People look so different in matching uniforms, hair cropped, etc. vs what you remember them looking like growing up. It is cool to finally know someone appearing in a big time movie though. Haven't seen him in 20 years.

Awesome movie!!! I served in an F-14 squadron on USS Abe and love watching Top Gun. Per the OP, the F-14 carried Phoenix missiles, which were long range, but I gotta think the long term strategy has changed in this regard. Today, the F-14 would be 50 yo. While it was the coolest thing ever to fly, it’s not capable of competing with today’s technology.

Interesting that you noticed all those sweaty guys..

Meg Ryan! Not too sweaty.

Well, they weren't newbies. You had to have a fair amount of experience to get selected for the extra training at Top Gun--at least according to the movie. They picked the top pilots already serving.

my poor description. Newbies to the air craft carrier. One would presume that there were no shortage of pilots on the carrier that had more experience, and had previously attended Top Gun.

Quentin Tarantino was the guy who first brought up the hidden homosexual subtext in the Top Gun script - way back in the movie 'Sleep With Me' (1994)....Tarantino is 'Sid'....

Sid: You want subversion on a massive level. You know what one of the greatest ****ing scripts ever written in the history of Hollywood is? Top Gun.

Duane: Oh, come on.

Sid: Top Gun is ****ing great. What is Top Gun? You think it's a story about a bunch of fighter pilots.

Duane: It's about a bunch of guys waving their dicks around.

Sid: It is a story about a man's struggle with his own homosexuality. It is! That is what Top Gun is about, man. You've got Maverick, all right? He's on the edge, man. He's right on the ****ing line, all right? And you've got Iceman, and all his crew. They're gay, they represent the gay man, all right? And they're saying, go, go the gay way, go the gay way. He could go both ways.

Duane: What about Kelly McGillis?

Sid: Kelly McGillis, she's heterosexuality. She's saying: no, no, no, no, no, no, go the normal way, play by the rules, go the normal way. They're saying no, go the gay way, be the gay way, go for the gay way, all right? That is what's going on throughout that whole movie... He goes to her house, all right? It looks like they're going to have sex, you know, they're just kind of sitting back, he's takin' a shower and everything. They don't have sex. He gets on the motorcycle, drives away. She's like, "What the ****, what the **** is going on here?" Next scene, next scene you see her, she's in the elevator, she is dressed like a guy. She's got the cap on, she's got the aviator glasses, she's wearing the same jacket that the Iceman wears. She is, okay, this is how I gotta get this guy, this guy's going towards the gay way, I gotta bring him back, I gotta bring him back from the gay way, so I'll do that through subterfuge, I'm gonna dress like a man. All right? That is how she approaches it. Okay, now let me just ask you - I'm gonna digress for two seconds here. I met this girl Amy here, she's like floating around here and everything. Now, she just got divorced, right? All right, but the REAL ending of the movie is when they fight the MIGs at the end, all right? Because he has passed over into the gay way. They are this gay fighting ****ing force, all right? And they're beating the Russians, the gays are beating the Russians. And it's over, and they ****ing land, and Iceman's been trying to get Maverick the entire time, and finally, he's got him, all right? And what is the last ****ing line that they have together? They're all hugging and kissing and happy with each other, and Ice comes up to Maverick, and he says, "Man, you can ride my tail, anytime!" And what does Maverick say? "You can ride mine!" Swordfight! Swordfight! ****in' A, man!

Right, wasn’t the whole idea that they were already the top 1% of all navy pilots..

Ghostrider I think you missed the story line because you got it wrong .

My B-I-L’s squadron did the flying scenes for the film. When he retired from active duty he flew bogies against Top Gun students as a reservist, eventually becoming the XO of the bogie squadron, “St. Adversary.” ( St. Elsewhere was a popular tv show at the time). He once told me the hardest thing he ever did was to land on a carrier at night.

He now captains 777s between LA and China and only has 2 more years before mandatory retirement. He flies gliders as a hobby and will be on the US team this summer for the world championships in Poland.

I know a guy who was an extra in Over the Top. I always wanted to be an extra in a movie. Or maybe get one line...”these pretzels are making me thirsty”.
