What is a 'Fact"?

From the discussion of the last few days regarding the 10 Year old girl and her rape and abortion. It seemed there was a lot of assumption being made as to the veracity of the story with a lot of sources used to state: 1. the story was false or 2. the story was true. Many of those points were being made based on things that in no way were factual (a fact). This led quickly to a very argumentative discussion that was only clarified with more information (facts) when the rapist was arrested and identified.
Consider what you might call 'urban myths', stories of alien abduction, and Sasquatch. There are many who believe those items, but can they bbe facts?
