What is the job of “assistant OC or assistant DC”? …

It seems to me that it is just a way for a Head Coach to give a position coach a title to pad his CV and provide him with higher status, but no real substance behind the title. Maybe it is a way to give a cheap “promotion” to a coach that might leave. For instance, maybe a great OL coach being able to tell his kids that he is not just a lowly position coach, but also an “assistant DC”, soothes egos. I am probably wrong, but I would be grateful for enlightenment.
