What the Memphis message board warriors think about the game

I dealt with one ignorant comment the week following the Sandusky story hitting the news. That’s it. Imo as penn staters we’re pretty sensitive to this stuff but I’ve seen almost zero real world effects from it, personally.
As for bias due to it? I recall psu getting hosed for around fifty years now. Probably because we weren’t in a conference then regional bias vs fallout to the scandal .
Either way, in 1994 they said Nebraska this and that instead of us. 17 years prior to the scandal .
You believe what you want and don’t let clowns like those get to you. Imo no one will ever know the truth with what happened here.
Well we know one thing: Joe would have never turned a blind eye to it!

Here are some of their comments from a Memphis board:

https://csnbbs.com/forum-499.html

"If we beat PENN STATE.....it will be a beating FLORIDA with Emmitt Smith in the backfield moments. Or beating USC in LA moments. We have a history of creating these MOMENTS. Be sure to be there."

"Don’t underestimate the lack of motivation of playing a G5 team.

"

"Tigers vs the child molestors, and yes, they had a live one.

I know i joke, but i ******* hate penn state. They are a prime example of everything wrong in college football. They should not even have a football program. They should have never gotten their wins back. I don't respect them and i haven't watched them in many years. I hate we have to play them in our first trip to the cotton bowl. I'll watch but i'll mute the game bc the announcers will be gooing all over them bc they are a ncaa fav football program. They have always been that way too, and the ncaa didn't have the balls to do the right thing. Made it even easier to stop watching ncaa sports."

"I hate to think what Penn State might have done to our ball boy if it was them and not Cincinnati."

"I'm sure penn state has a good football team, but i don't watch power conference football teams anymore (unless we play them). I did watch all sports for a long time, and Penn state has always been a ncaa fav football team. Espn loves them. They've had more money coming in compared to us, because they are a big part of this power conference scam ruining college sports. They should be getting top coaches and top recruits. I'm sure this will be a five star vs walk on type match up. This is a game of haves and have nots. They should be favored to win this game. We got nothing to lose. I'd rather play boise state since they are in a position more like us."

"They look a lot like Cincinnati, we look a lot like Minnesota. If we don't get screwed by the refs we are at #10 which is where Penn State is. Minnesota is ranked #18. They are bigger than us; we are faster than them. The key is going to be White, who will have to be able to make throws without pristine offensive line play.

It is a very even matchup; very winnable."

"In the big 10, there is Ohio St, and then everyone else. Didn’t Penn St play 3 ranked teams all year long and get beat by 2 of them? The Big 10, minus Oh St, has been living off the success of 20+ years ago for awhile now. So as a fan, I’m happy to be here, if they are. But let’s not act like they are a tier 1 team that is actually contending for championships."

"Look, let's be bigger than that. They have a great tradition in football. They're better than us. I think our speed will surprise them. Southern football is different. This is going to be a game. They're arrogant. We'd be the same if we were playing them in basketball. Let's just kick their arrogant asses and walk away. We're going to beat these pricks."

"All that matters is that THIS year Memphis is 12-1 with four wins over ranked teams, let alone that those teams all stayed good all year, being 10-1, 10-1 and 9-1 in games not involving Memphis. And we are not newcomers to being good, this is the sixth straight year. Plenty of three star caliber athletes. Games and wins over ranked and good Missisippi let alone Josh Rosen led UCLA...who did stink as it turns out that season. I figured the message board tough guys blindly supporting a school where the coach and fan base willfully blinded themselves to child rape would actually view playing the a Cotton Bowl against Memphis as the bad thing. Hate to go there as internet wads are typically not representative, but they have earned it. Next year matters. Need to get a 7th consecutive 8 win or better season and need a follow up top twenty NY6 bowl season and maybe these ******** will come off their douche horses. PSU has a huge alumni base in Dallas, but I think they will be surprised at the number of Memphis fans there. We are not Alabama. But we are not Western Michigan either"
Good to see Memphis fans are as classless and pathetic as P5 teams - They have that going for them at least.
I guess Penn State is the only entity that had a bad guy and so everyone should be killed. Let's you in on how bad the story was portrayed by the media that morons in Memphis think we should all get death. Smh

I thought some on here have claimed that no one holds Sandusky against Penn State any longer and that everyone else in the country has moved on and forgotten about it?

It is a shame that there is segment of every fanbase we go up against that are so ignorant about the whole matter. As someone else stated, thank you BOT and also main stream media (who haven't given a rats ass about Ohio State or MSU those horrific acts).

Makes sense to me that every fan base would be like that, since it seems to me that most of the country has the same view. One of the great tragedies of my life. I have tried time and time again to present the facts and soon realize closed and uninformed ( ex for faulty information management by journalists) minds have moved on.

Blow them off the field. PSU has to beat this team by at least 3 td's. They will be expected to win and if they lay an egg, it's obviously not good. It will be a test for these guys to not underestimate Memphis...

Reminds me of how much ESPN loves us and respects us!!!! These guys must not have watched ESPN for years.

Don’t get your hopes up...the boys are really down about the shafting we have received.

I agree. I really can't understand why people think this is good for PSU. I get it is still a NY6 bowl, but the opponent is a total bummer to me. How are our boys supposed to get up for it. I don't think it's fair, but what do I know???

Most of our team is back next year and even the high draft picks still have things to prove. The silver lining of this shit match up is replays of Friermuth and Noah Cain cannonballing into the end zone over and over before and while the playoff is on Dec 28.

I think it would be incredibly hard to get the team motivated for this game.

Well, let's be honest - we can relate.

It's like the time PSU basketball knocked off North Carolina in the NCAA tournament in 2001.

Every single one of us, plus our children and grandchildren, will go to our graves before it happens again.

The difference is football >>>>> basketball.

Let me see what Memphis is know for - Cheating in Basketball and Elvis, that's about it, oh and 1 year of minor relevance then it's back to bottom feeders.

Remind you of Kentucky? Let’s hope the outcome is different.

You are playing in one of the flashier stadiums in the country.

every college football fan is getting hyped for the playoff semifinals and will have their eyes on this game before getting ready for LSU at 4 pm.

Most of those eyes will want and be rooting for you to lose to the plucky underdog.

Personally that would hype me up. It’s definitely not the rose bowl. But I think the players will get hyped once they see the stadium etc

I would think the letdown is who they are playing. You spend all year preparing for games like Michigan and Ohio State, then you go off to play Memphis. I'm not trying to knock them, but at some point human nature has to be considered.

Unlike the posters on this site!

Good luck in the Rose Bowl

That has to be the lamest comeback ever. So you think Vegas has no idea what they're doing, because there's really not much on the line if they screw it up? No pressure at all to get it right. What world do you live in?

Vegas lines are nothing more than the number that will get the same amount of money bet on both sides. Why do they always open at one number and then move even when there are no practice injuries noted? It's because more money was coming in on one side than the other.

One would think that this fact has been posted often enough on this board. Guess not.

Has anyone here been to to Memphis recently? It makes the south side of Chicago look like fvcking Disneyland. It is a complete shithole.

I was in Nashville this summer and while I was there went to a Slash concert. I was sitting at a bar before the show and a couple took the seats next to me. Turned out they were from the Memphis area and drove to Nashville for the show. Slash was appearing in Memphis also but this couple told me that it’s not safe to go near the arena there anymore. So they drove the several hours to Nashville to see him and got a hotel.

That is correct. But one can read their social media....

I saw a snort emoji from Freiermuth, which is open to interpretation, but I've seen nothing else. Also, the game is over two weeks away. A player's emotions minutes after the announcement can fade once the team gets together and starts preparations for the game. I am confident that Franklin and the staff will have the kids ready for this game.

Let's avoid blanket assertions when we aren't on the inside.

I'm going to make a blanket assertion that PSU will try to score more points and win Bob!

There is a lot more out there. But you are right, Franklin may have then ready for the game. If he does, it may be CJF’s best work to date as Memphis is a terrible draw and hardly the stuff of legends. Note: He did not have them ready for Kentucky last year. I’d be shocked if the team is motivated at all. And who could blame them? You play hard and well all year to play a Buffalo-level team as your bowl game. Sucks! Our best chance is if our talent overwhelms them early. Otherwise, I would expect a mailed in lackluster effort. On to the Blue White game and 2020!

I totally disagree. The team views this as a springboard into next year, where they have the bulk of their team returning. It can really set the stage for a great year, a la 1994 Citrus Bowl.

We’re screwed. :(

IMO, you couldn't be more wrong. Over half the team was here for last year's disappointing effort against Kentucky and I don't think any of them want to be two time losers to teams they should beat. The upperclassmen from last years team had played in the Fiesta and Rose bowl the previous two years so, finishing out their careers in the Citrus bowl was a bit of a disappointment. Most of our key players will be back next year and I think they will look at this game as a building block for next year. And finally, the coaching. I don't think Franklin took Kentucky seriously last year. I mean, how do you explain him going for it on 4th down from our own 33 yd line on the first drive? He's going to be all over this team using last year as motivation. I put money on Penn State as soon as I was able. They're going to lay a beat down on Memphis.

Mac, 12-1 Memphis is far from a Buffalo-level team. They are more like an even better 2018 App. State, to draw a G5 comparison. They may be more of a 2019 Minnesota the day we played them, at least what we saw of Minn's offense that day.

We will have our hands full even with taking the game and the opponent seriously and preparing well. Of course we need to dominate up front. Our best effort from coaches and players will win the game, but anything less leaves things up in the air. We play as we did vs. Rutgres, we lose. We play as we did after adjustments vs. Indiana, e.g., we win. I don't think we will get a Rutgres-level - or Kentucky-level - effort. I think they get their heads on straight and play well.

Still, I expect another close game, probably another one score margin, just as our all of our 5 bowls under Franklin have been. We are 2-3 in bowls under CJF; I have no doubt he wants very much to even that record (yeah, yeah, he wants to go 1-0) and springboard onto bigger and better in 2020.

What's somewhat interesting to me is that in the 3 bowl losses, we came back from tough deficits to get back in the game and have a chance to win. Certainly we should have won the Rose Bowl with a big lead. But we were scrappy vs. Georgia and nearly came back to tie that game (shades of future Trace!). We woke up and came back vs. Kentucky, but hopefully lesson learned about sleepwalking in a game where the other team is motivated. This Memphis team is better than either that 2015 Georgia team or last year's Kentucky team. They will smack us in the nose from the first play, and we better smack them first and smack harder, or we might get embarrassed.

I think we will win but I expect a close game. A team like Memphis has a once in a lifetime chance to make a statement on a national stage and this it is. A win would be the biggest in the history of their program. It would likely lift them into the top 15 in the final AP poll, their highest season ending ranking ever. They will be ready to play their best game of the year and they will be a difficult opponent. In the end I expect our superior talent to win out, but if we don't put them away early, it could be a nail biter.

If you’ve ever been to Memphis, easy to understand why their fans are a bit salty. I travel a ton with my job & have been to virtually every large city in the US, multiple times. Memphis near or at the bottom of my list.
I second that emotion. My main priority when I’ve had to travel to Memphis over the years is to get the heck out of town safely. On the other hand, Nashville ain’t too shabby.

Wow... we had better alert LSU about these upstarts! They may have a flash in the plan decent team (Buffalo actually has a much better recent track record of decent teams). But their coach is leaving, they have zilch as far as recruiting, and will quickly descend to sub-mediocrity starting next year. The bottom line is that they are a sub-class program, from a sub-class conference with zero buzz to offer to this game. A total no-win situation for Penn State. And an insult to what our team did this year. Nice job Sandy! Thanks Big10!
