What was the greatest performance by a defensive unit in a Super Bowl? Opinions vary.

1. 74 Steelers

2. 85 Bears

3. 00 Ravens

These 3 defensive units are the cream of the crop IMHO

There was quote in the Pittsburgh Sports Pages that Fran Tarkenton was so upset about his play in the Super Bowl that he threw his helmet into his locker and that LC Greenwood deflected it.

Yep, Steelers. Five members of HoF, four of which get consideration as best ever at their positions. Plus Head coach is and DC should be.

as the Vikings only points came off a
blocked punt that was recovered in the Steelers endzone.

The Steelers defense forced five Viking turnovers and held the Vikings to a still Super Bowl record 119 yards of total offense and a record-low nine first downs despite losing two-thirds of their starting linebackers as Andy Russell and Jack Lambert
to injuries during the game.

NY Jets, 1969
I've had the privilege of watching every Superbowl that was ever played live on TV.

I was still a young tike when the Jets won the Superbowl over Johnny U and the Baltimore Colts. The players that I remember from that Jets team were Broadway Joe Namath, Emerson Boozer, Matt Snell (RB's) and WR Don Maynard.

Who/what made that Jets Defense special?

I believe a young Chaz Noll was a member of the Colts coaching staff who lost that game.

Super Bowl IX was in 75 but was the 74 Steelers. It is rumored that Fran Tarkenton walked into the locker room after the game and threw his helmet into his locker. The Viking next to him said "I am surprised it wasn't intercepted."

  • Fran was 11 of 26 for 102 yards and 3 INTs
  • Vikings had 17 yards rushing on 21 attempts
  • 119 total net yards
  • Six points

The Super Bowl nine Steelers team that defense was smothering if I remember right, they only gave up like less than 30 yards a game rushing in the two playoff games and the Super Bowl against the Vikings. Steelers should’ve won that game 16-0

The Vikings six points came off a blocked punt that was picked up and run into the endzone against the Steelers punting unit. The Steelers defense outscored the Minnesota Vikings offense 2-0.
