What's the big deal over this Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad?

As someone who went to school for advertising & worked in advertising I really don't get the uproar over this Pepsi ad. Yes it's kinda corny but most commercials are. So Pepsi inspired by social unrest decides to put out a message of unity. Diverse types of people doing something together in unison during volatile times. Spreading a message of unity through a shared love for a particular brand of soda. Am I describing that Pepsi commercial or that famous beloved Coke commercial that came out in 1971 amid the high point of the Anti-Vietnam war protests. You know, the one at the end of the Mad Men series finale. They are virtually the same ad.
Or is it so outrageous that Kendall Jenner be featured? What would she know about minorities? Oh yeah her boyfriend is black, her sister's kids are mixed & her dad's a transsexual. What was Pepsi thinking!!?
But Kendall giving the cop a Pepsi was mocking the photo of the black woman who offered herself to be cuffed by police in riot gear. Because offering a Pepsi as a peace offering & offering to be arrested are the same thing right? Could it maybe instead be inspired by one of the most famous American photos? The picture of a hippy girl putting a flower in the barrel of a national guardsman's gun. Nahhh Couldn't possibly be that.
The jokes came flying about how you should just give a cop beating you a Pepsi. Yeah because that's clearly the message of the commercial right? I mean it's not a Kubrick film but if that's what you think the commercial is saying maybe you shouldn't be allowed to watch any kinds of film anymore because that's a pretty shallow, lazy & stupid interpretation. Do you really think that's what they intended the commercial to mean?
It really shows how far off the deep end our society has gone when you see the level of cynicism expressed over this admittedly corny commercial full of good intentions, or the addictiveness of feeling outraged has on people. Outrage has become the drug of the decade.
