When does Senior level wrestling start again?

Will always be a Zain fan, he's my hometown guy. That said, I dint get the same effects watching him wrestle freestyle. I so wish there was some form of professional folkstyle circuit in the US so I could continue to watch Zain break people.

I'm curious because I miss seeing Zain wrestle. It's been a long time.
I thought you might be referring to an up and coming senior tour, you know for all those 8th year sophomores coming out of their wheelchairs to compete this year.

Took some digging:
  • Henri Deglane Grand Prix Jan 20-23
  • Yarigin Jan 26-30
  • Matteo Pellicone Ranking Series I Feb 3-6
  • Bout at the Ballpark (USA vs. Iran) Feb 12
  • Dan Kolov Feb 17-20
  • Yasar Dogu Ranking Series II Feb 24-27
  • US Open starts April 26
  • Pan-Am Championships May 5-8
  • WTT starts May 20
  • Ranking Series III (TBD) June 2-5
  • Final X Returns: June 11 & 18
  • Ranking Series IV (TBD) July 14-17
  • Worlds: July 25-31
I don't see other tourneys like Schultz or Farrell (other than a reference to it being in april on the team qualification procedures) on anyone's calendar though.

I'm curious to see the lineup of US vs. Iran scheduled in February as part of the Iowa vs. OK State dual meet. Given Covid challenges, I wouldn't get my hopes up for a lot of top notch matches if in fact it occurs, but who knows.

Snyder vs. Cox is supposed to occur in the early part of the year as well. March 16th I think.

The Winter of our Discontent. Might be a lot of instances of "seduced and abandoned" again this year in terms of event hype and subsequent disappointment.

Any word on Nolf's injury in Russia and how serious it was. I want to see him back at it soon. He's second on the food chain at 74 KG.

I don't really know what Spey's source is here--but this looked at least mildly promising.

this was announced a while ago. it's a joint event with the Iowa-Oklahoma St. dual at the Texas Rangers stadium.
I'm fully aware of the event--just talking about the progress towards Iran being allowed into the country.

i think it's important to note that the phrase is not meant literally. the more accurate translation would be "damn america." it's also used commonly with other things such as traffic ("death to traffic!"). the iranian government translates it as "down with" for example. and it's also specifically focused at american foreign policy, the 1953 coup, and current sanctions.

and when you look at what he said in totality, what he means is the way we (as iranians) defeat america or "act on [death to america]" is by doing our jobs to the best of our ability to make our country stronger and better able to overcome american anti-iranian policy. he uses a doctor as an example. he's not actually talking about killing americans because that's not really what the phrase means.

it's kind of like our attitude towards the soviet union during the cold war.

i think this is important because we shouldn't let politics derail a great event. iranian fans worship the american team. at one point, the second most popular wrestler in iran was probably jordan burroughs. there is a lot of mutual respect and usa wrestling should not let political actors commandeer this event for their own purposes.

Phew! I was afraid he meant “storm America’s legislature!” :)

We have two past world champs at 74kgs. How is Nolf second at 74? Are they doing 10 weights?

I appreciate these insights, sincerely. Gotta add though that it's always a bit risky to presume to know what a person "means" by their words, unless that person is you of course. I also find myself wondering whether Iran would allow any American wrestler or coach into their country if that person had publicly stated "death to Iran," Burroughs included. Here's to hoping that these kinds of goodwill sporting events are not marred by miscommunication and political gamesmanship.

Imagine running the phrase "Dake is going to bomb Emami through the floor (in Oslo)" through an English translator on Google as a non-English speaking Persian wrestling journalist.

He'll fail to understand the "Dake-bombs" reference, for starters, and then everything else after that takes on a decidedly negative tone.

Forget Iran -- imagine saying "Dake bombs" at the TSA airport checkpoint.

Relevant anecdote: One of the platoon sergeants in my company, many moons ago, was a Pakistani-American. He had 6 deployments in GWOT as an infantryman before applying for and being picked up by a three letter agency to be...a translator.

Turns out that, despite having entire military schools where people spend years learning foreign languages, there are levels to this sort of thing, and a native speaker who was born in Pakistan and grew up in the Bronx is better than a kid from Maryland with 6 months of language school under his belt. He simply understands cultural references, context and tone better than anyone without years of complete, total language immersion ever will.

and i think an iranian poster over on the mat provided some further clarification that the video was edited out of context to be misleading. the general gist of his message was directed at business men in the region who say empty slogans (like death to america) but don’t give back to their community to help, in this case help fund the training of wrestlers so they can beat americans. even in the clip you get a piece when he talks about how a doctor does his part by being the best doctor he can be.

in context, the message becomes almost the opposite of the original video: “shut up with your empty slogans and do something to actually help our country”

Yasdani coming. That is probably why DT didnt go to Muthra Russia.

Even Irans B team is freaking loaded with absolute studs.

Since the Ok St vs Iowa dual will be a flop its cool this is a great match up.

Fix doing double duty is admirable.
DT isn’t doing this though, right? I’m very curious to see how Z-Money fares against King-Y.

Bottom line who cares its folkstyle time. Rather watch a 3-2 folkstyle match than a 1 min leg lace alligator roll 4 times match termination freestyle match any day. Only wish they’d take out riding time.

This Z-Money will be sitting, basically, Mat side. Of course, can't really get "Mat Side" in a baseball stadium, but they are good seats. Looking forward to seeing The USA squad and how they fare against the Iranians. Looks like some pretty decent wrestlers coming across the pond to go up against some pretty good wrestlers from our side. Will prolly be tougher than what I think it should be.

On the other mat, Okie State is about to experience a clean sweep from the great state of Iowa. Could get ugly!

Mike
