Charlie Zapiec, who went 34-1 as a starter for Penn State (1968 - 1971), made honorable mention All-American as an offensive lineman, and 1st team All-American as a LB. And I knew him when I was young, growing up at the same playground, where he was like a god.
DelcoLion, yes, I believe we are from the same vintage. I am a 74 Grad. We saw a lot of great football back then as students, and you are probably right about Mike Reid, but I have this great respect for Cappy as he beat all odds and represented Penn State as honorably as anyone before or after him.If I interpret your handle right, we are in the same class.
Mike Reid is the rock solid foundation of PSU's success over the last 50 years so he has to be my choice.
I believe you are right. I loved to watch Jimmy return punts, but there was excitement every time he touched the ball. He was an intelligent, well spoken, good looking guy who epitomized the Grand Experiment.Fairgambit, that is a great photo of Cefalo in the Cotton Bowl vs. Baylor. I was at the game, in the freezing cold, when true freshman Jimmy Cefalo worked his magic on the SWC champion Bears. I think (therefore I am ... wrong?) Cefalo might have been the first true freshman to start under Joe in 1974, perhaps a year after the rule allowing freshmen to play took effect.
Shane Conlan is certainly not a bad choice. Was at Sun Devil Stadium on 1/1/87 to watch him rise to the occasion against Testaverde & Co. A truly memorable day..#31, Shane Conlin
