I could be wrong but I thought a "white out" game was for BIG BIG games against highly thought of opponents. I just do not get Army (do a Red, White and Blue out) or Rutgers (just ignore). The ONLY potential game on the schedule is Michigan (may be too late in the season). As for me I think we should just skip it this year?

Because dealing with anyone in the administration / AD office at Penn St is like dealing with the state government- no rational thought. We do it this year because we've done it every year, etc. Once Guido was forced out all independent thought, imagination, or forward thinking completely left the place. The schedule this year does not lend to a white out game but they will force one in anyway (likely Rutgers- woo hoooo!........Insert vomiting emoticon here). ;)

No we shouldn't skip it because it's a yearly tradition now. It's not fair to the seniors to take it away. It's going to end up being against Rutgers and honestly I love that. It's a primetime game, whiteout, tons of new jersey recruits on hand and RU is going to be slaughtered... then at that point for once and for all all of their crazy's can hover back down in their parents basements and maybe they'll give up on the thought that Rutgers could ever become anything more than a perenial punching bag in the big 10

It should be Rutgers - a BIG game under the lights with a big TV audience. It doesn't work for daytime games.

It would be smart to skip it for a few years, then bring it back when the time is right. When things like this get stale, sometimes you need to put them on the shelf for a while

I agree with you. Now, if as a previous poster has stated it has something to do with the senior class, well then THEY should choose the game and every senior class going forward would choose THE game. I did not think it was an annual tradition? I thought it is a BIG game tradition.

Yes. A tradition that should not be taken away! Just like no names on the uniforms! What Charlie? There are names on the uniforms? Of Penn State??? Oh..

It's more of a student body "tradition" than a player tradition. And I use the word tradition loosely because it is only about a decade old. It gets lame if you start doing it just for the sake of doing it.

We've had a whiteout game before against Illinois in 2008. Also, it's Halloween and we lost to them last year. Plus, who doesn't hate Beckman? There's your whiteout game, and it's not even close for those reasons and more!

The 2008 game involved two ranked teams. I'm not saying we should or should not do it again, but it should be reserved for games that matter

Completely 1000% agreed. But, it's obvious that the whiteout game is going to happen regardless of the stakes and importance. I'd prefer to skip this season. Michigan is the only game that might be whiteout worthy, but the timing for the students and holidays is terrible as well as the time of year. I think Illinois is the best choice for this season, if we must.

I totally agree about the day game white outs, boring. Night game white outs have the presence of a white glow across the stadium. No other color has anything close to the white out glow.

At Elite programs the students will show even if it's break time. The 70's late season games were always packed in the student sections! It will be this year for Michigan if we're undefeated or have 1 loss!

Anything you feel forced to do because you are afraid to not do it, can easily be bypassed. It is halfhearted by definition. I am in favor of a red, white and blue Army game because they deserve it and it will add thousands to the attendance. It is not a whiteout replacement because it is not a big time match up. If they, whoever they are, decide to still do a whiteout, I would still be in favor of honoring a Military Academy on campus. All of the Networks would love it, with the possible exception of BTN. Even more reason to do it. Rutger's fans chanted vulgar epithets at the last Military Academy to visit Piscataway. Again, even more reason to set ourselves apart from the low class haters responsible.

RED, WHITE and BLUE for ARMY games!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not a white out.

I totally agree. I ALWAYS thought the purpose of a "white-out" is to show disrespect for your opponent !!!! To do that to Army would be a REALLY wrong message.

Multi-color themes have to be highly coordinated. Like a shirt sitting on your seat, to pull it off. So instead we should black out the Army game since they are the Black Night/Cadets. It shouldn't be too hot the first weekend in October.

That said, Rutgers is an important game. Winning that game is probably the most important on the schedule this year. When we are back to full strength then it won't be as important but this year it absolutely is. You can keep saying it's not important if it makes you feel better about where our program is this year but that doesn't mean it's not important. So why wouldn't would want our team to have every advantage to win that game? It's whoever Rutgers trots out for a QBs first road game and forcing him to playing in that atmosphere, well remember Jimmy Clausen. Also the whiteout atmosphere is a recruiting tool. What if the whiteout atmosphere against RU is the difference in landing one of the NJ kids we're targeting? They compare the atmosphere for a game at RU vs. the atmosphere here playing RU as a whiteout game. It's not hard to see how that could sway a kid, right?

It's one of PSU's absolute best recruiting tools, not having one would be utterly stupid.

You are wise jason. spot on brother. People get WAY too caught up in a fear of validating Rutgers or that having a white for the game against them will mean something. In reality, it means literally nothing other than providing a great atmosphere for recruits, fans, and players during an early season 8pm kickoff. Regardless of people's fears related to making the RU game a big one, it is whether they want admit it or not. It's the conference opener, its the first time RU is visiting Beaver Stadium as a division foe, and it's a game where RU has a chance to win (which is going to get increasingly difficult each year moving forward as PSU's recruiting continues to improve and their continues to decline). If RU pulls out a win on our field, it will do more for this forced rivalry than holding a white out. People need to understand that and stop being afraid of things that don't matter.

I see your point, especially the "recruiting" tool. But, would't the Michigan game be better for that? Well, none of us get to decide anyhow :)

I don't remember anything being chanted at the Army game. However, I do remember the We Are chants during the moment of silence last year. Of course, you will say that didn't happen because your fans always behave perfectly. I guess I imagined the Ray Rice taunts after the game as I imagined your chant also. Price of getting old, I guess.

We have so many intelligent leaders on this board. I am certain some have to be leading major corporations.

What a great idea. Let's skip having the whiteout this year, something that separates us from every school in the nation, because we don't have a big enough game in some peoples eyes and want to act like an elitist towards Rutgers which is a great time to show New Jersey recruits what they are missing if they do not choose PSU. I bet Rashan Gary would have no interest in seeing a whiteout We should let Hack, Zettel, Wartman, etc go out without a whiteout too. In fact, Penn State should not only cancel the whiteout, but also not bring any recruits to games this year we just don't have a game worthy.

Wildly inaccurate. About 100 students took part in a vulgar chant against Navy in 2007. Not the whole stadium, not even an entire section or a significant part of a section.
Amy and Navy have both played multiple game at RU since that were incident free. We fully expect to be insulted by the supporters of your particular football program but at least have your facts somewhat straight.

A Whiteout game, without the big time opponent, will not be a very special environment anyway. The game won't be as interesting to the fans and the fans are the ones that create that special game environment for a Whiteout game, bar none. Wearing white is only a small part of what makes that game atmosphere what it is.

The hype and build up all week of looking forward to a big game, the raucous crowd, an instant sellout with ridiculously overpriced ticket resale market, the noise from the stands, a little friendly animosity towards an opponent you don't like, a battle for high poll/division rankings or the potential for a major upset of a top-ranked team, etc. are what make that environment what it really is. All of that culminates in a really crazy game time release of fan energy, which makes for one of the best game environments in the country. More simply put for me (an out of area alumnus)... a Whiteout game typically makes me want to spend thousands on getting a plane ticket, hotel room, game ticket and make the trip to State College because it's a game that if I miss it, there's a chance I'll regret it for ages (2002 Nebraska, Alabama, Notre Dame, 2005 Ohio State, etc.).

None of those things will be present for a game against Rutgers, or anyone else on the schedule, with the possible exception of Michigan. Our environment is so awesome, opposing fans now have the "Beaver Stadium Whiteout" on their bucket list of things they must experience in college football. I see the posts saying this all the time on Reddit. No college football fan with a bucket list is saying, "I would give anything to see a PSU - Rutgers Whiteout." There's no way I'd consider flying in for that game given the cost. It won't even be televised on a major network! It's a BTN game which by anyone's definition is a tier below ABC/ESPN television.

Sorry, but there just isn't a game on the schedule that generates that kind of buzz this year, and that's why they shouldn't force one. Start doing that, and the Whiteout loses all meaning for future games. Go down that road and before you know it, we'll Whiteout Temple just because is the most "convenient" date on the schedule logistically. Then we'll be back to where we were when I was a student... having one of the quietest 100k seat stadiums in the country.

I have to say reading this thread has me pretty confused as a fan. OK, I NOW "think" the whiteout game should be Rutgers or Michigan. Both have advantages and disadvantages. The Rutgers game is "safer" since it is so early in the season. It "might" help recruiting. The Michigan game "could" be huge !!! We "should" be 9-1 and Michigan "should" be 9-1. Talk about a BIG Game for the NATIONAL MEDIA !!!
But, that could go bad if either team falters.
Rutgers (safe, better weather), Michigan (who we REALLY hate, risky weather). So would you "roll the dice" or take the sure thing :)

You have a lot of valid points here however, where I disagree is that for this team, this year, Rutgers will be a big game. It's not going to be OSU last year, not many games are. Keeping the NJ talent flowing here is partly predicated on beating them consistently. A whiteout atmosphere, even a less than perfect one, is only going to give us an advantage. Remember this is a 1st years quarterback's first road game. I mean, if we're still whiting-out Rutgers 4 years from now then something has gone wrong or they have stepped up their program in a big way.

I'm fine if the powers that be choose the Michigan game, but I'm not fine with skipping a year because of fear of "legitimizing" someone.

I do agree with other posters that we need a culture change in terms of fans/students showing up for the Thanksgiving games. Maybe this will be the equivalent for Franklin when he was at Vandy of standing in the student union recruiting the students to go to the games.

What has our record been for White Out games. It seems like we have lost our share of these games.

I am not sure anything can get stale when you do it once a year.
