Top 3 alphabetically. Day Franklin and Lanning (can debate the order all day)
4 Fleck
5 Ferentz

Cignetti and Riley (despite recent issues) in the mix

Ryan Day
Dan Lanning
James Franklin

Give them all the same budget, and Franklin moves up one.

None of the others could play a close game against O$U. Ask Ferentz about that.

Greg Schiano
Brett Bielema
PJ Fleck

Oregon - Dan Lanning
Penn State - James Franklin
Ohio State - Ryan Day
Iowa - Kirk Ferentz
Nebraska - Matt Rhule
Illinois - Bret Bielema

Taking into account the whole picture (in game tactics plus program building plus player development)

DeShaun Foster isn't in the top 5 (maybe not top 10 yet) but there's potential there. Even at 4-7, he's done a nice job in year one at UCLA

Tier 1 Lanning, Day in that order
Tier 1b Franklin
Tier 2 Ferentz
Tier 3 Fleck, Bielema, Cignetti (largely based on prior jobs) in no particular order

Guys like Fickell, Riley, Rhule and Schiano are tricky to place as they are solid coaches but have struggled at times to deliver results and are other guys I considered for my list

honest question. By what metrics do you use to rate JF higher than Day?

Day was born on third and thought he hit a triple. He inherited a program in a better state than maybe any coach in history except for DeBoer at Bama. I still have Day ahead of Franklin but there's a case to be made that Day has it easier than Franklin in many aspects and therefore a coach like Franklin might be better despite the results not always showing up on the field or in the rankings.

Day and Ferentz have to be in a top five Franklin too. Lanning probably as well but the track record is relatively short. Then you are talking Fleck, Bielema, Schiaparelli, Probably Cignetti in that last tier but need more data, we'll see how the B1G teams adjust now that they'll be studying the heck out of his tendencies year after year. Then Riley. Riley and Cignetti same tier. Everyone else though Rhule and Fickell are.the top of the bottom third.

Great question.
