Who Goes and Who Stays for Next Year?

Your hatred of Franklin knows no bounds and it destroys any objectivity on your part. You try to present yourself as an authority but its all bull$hit and bluster
Whatever dude, when you find someone that is as consistently right, we'll talk, until then, pound sand. My objectivity is top notch. You just don't like what I have to say.

For whatever its worth, Lavar was pitching Brendon Strange as the Mackey Award winner for next year. LaVar is obviously very clued in on the Penn State program

You may be right. Some guys come in ready or show a lot of promise early in a limited role. Then there are guys like Allen Robinson that had 29 yards receiving as a freshman but over 1000 each of the next 2 years before turning pro.

Could there be an Allen Robinson in that room that we don't know about yet? Maybe. But I'm not writing anyone off in their freshman year especially when we returned 2 of 3 starters and brought in a 5th year guy that was 4th in receiving yards in the nation last year. There are only so many pass play reps and with the emergence of a run game, we relied on airing it out less.
Allen Robinson was either a low 3 star or high 2 star recruit we took a flyer on. He wasn't expected to do anything. I would say 4 star guys like KS and Ivey should have come in with a better chance to play.

Either way they need a #1 next year....we got a ton of 2's and 3's to make the room good. A true 1 makes the offense elite.

No doubt we are looking for guys to step up at WR and a lack of top end WRs could limit an otherwise pretty potent offense.

Maybe Washington sees a year of clear-cut #1 numbers in the 1200+ yard range as increasing that NFL pay day over a middle round this year?

Maybe we find a proven gem in the portal?

Maybe the light goes on for one of the many young guys that haven't broken out yet on the current roster?

Maybe one of next year's freshmen are too good to keep off the field?

Either way, it does feel like WR in 2023 needs one or more of those things to occur. You'd think top WRs would be beating down the door to have Allar throwing to them and a pretty strong run game keeping defenses honest.

Washington is great but no deep threat. Washingto will be awesome with DA but still need that deep guy.

I think Evans and Saunders have chance to open things up and be deep threats with their speed. We do seem to be missing the big bodied guy that can win 50-50 balls deep. Too bad Meiga hasn't put it all together yet. He seems to have an ideal size and speed combo.

I was hoping Meiga would take the starting X position going into the year so Tinsley could play his natural Z leaving Parker to the slot so he could dominate. I think the double tight end set (which neither Yurcich nor Franklin care for) we have used the last few games strongly suggests they know the line and receiver positions are not getting it done.

The lack of a big bodied X has been an issue for years and is even bigger give the offense we currently have literally runs through that position. Yurcich has found ways to get it done so I may have underestimated him but we need help none the less.

Lol at your objectivity. You have to be a moron to say Franklin was not impacted by sanctions. You are clueless or not a psu fan.

I think you are the one that is clueless. The facts have shown the the clowns Franklin brought with him from Nashville provided the biggest impacts on the 14 and 15 seasons. Not the sanctions. That assertion is 100% backed up by John Donovan's performance at UW. Franklin ruined 14 and 15, not the sanctions. That is a fact. Deal with it.

6 scholarship OL when Franklin took over, 0 punters on scholly, and only 5 scholly LBs. They were not even at 85. That is a fact too.

Now get my fries.

Good question, too early yet, but when has that ever stopped us?

My thoughts and questions:

QB- Cliff at age 38 will finally move on but stay around state college running his NIL gig. Allar gets his shot and pribula stays. Unfortunately, Veilleux tests the portal waters.

RB- Both Singleton and Allen like how they've been used and know that low mileage will get them to the NFL young and healthy enough to get a 2nd contract. Plus, they see Barkley tearing it up. So they are back to RBU. I'm guessing Lee moves on which leaves depth way too bare. Going to have to add a 2nd 2023 RB.

WR- Tinsley runs out of eligibility. Parker knows that a year of #1 WR with Allar could produce numbers that significantly boost his draft stock, so he returns. Lambert-Smith, Wallace and all on 2 deep return. I'm guessing 1 or 2 further down the depth chart portal due to being passed up by freshmen.

TE- There is a chance Strange tries the NFL but would be a late pick. I put his return at 75%. I see the others coming back.

OL- Juice is a RS SR but does he have a covid bonus year? If so, he just might use it (maybe 70%) to be one more year removed from his accident when he tries to make the leap to the NFL. Fashanu is probably 50/50 on going although I have seen less rosy draft projections since he was injured. Perhaps that makes him return to solidify a high 1st round grade? Nourzad said he's coming back. Effner is a RS Sr who I think has another year and probably returns. Can't see Wormely moving on. If Wallace does it isn't to the NFL. The young guns who have shown well are all back, Tengwell, Shelton, Loane, etc.

DE- I think they all return minus maybe Tarburton (does he have eligibility?). Chop, Isaac, vanover, Dennis-Sutton all return. Maybe someone down the depth chart portals but who knows?

DT- PJ might be the biggest loss. Hopefully Izzard is ready to take the reigns. But I think Beamon, ellies, van den berg, Durant all return.

LB- Sutherland moves on. Jacobs I'd put at maybe 75% return. Carter, Elsdon, King all return. Not sure about Katshir.

DB- brown and Porter move on. King, Ellis, Reed, Wheatley, Wilson, Dixon, hardy, Miller, and Winston all return. If anyone moves on it may be someone way down the depth chart.
Jacobs and Fashanu gone.

So I've been searching for the most comprehensive draft evaluation list that goes into deep rounds. I link it below. But here are their PSU evaluations:

15 CB RS Jr Porter 1st round
20 OT Soph Fashanu 1st round
160 WR Soph Washington 5th round
211 EDGE Rs Jr Isaac 6th round
258 WR Rs Sr Tinsley 7th round
278 S Rs Sr Brown undrafted
393 DT Rs Sr Mustipher undrafted
406 TE Soph Theo Johnson undrafted
429 OT Rs Jr Caeden Wallace undrafted

And that's it for the top 500 draft eligible prospects. There was 262 picks in the 2022 NFL draft. 32 1st, 64 was end of 2nd, 105 end of 3rd, 143 end of 4th, 179 end of 5th, 221 end of 6th.

They generally don't recommend leaving early unless you have at least a 2nd round grade. Of course we know kids are often mislead and leave early to be undrafted sometimes.

2023 draft evaluations

Note: I believe LB Sutherland, P Amor, and K Pinegar may be out of eligibility.

For those posting as PSU "fans" but are actually Ohio St and Michigan fans:

Ohio St:
2 QB Rs Soph Stroud
19 OT Jr Johnson
30 WR Jr Smith-Njigba
50 EDGE Sr Harrison
64 S Jr Ransom
73 OT Sr Jones
79 OC Rs Soph Wypler
113 S Jr Hickman
166 RB Rs Soph Williams
187 S Sr Proctor
224 CB Rs Sr Brown
248 LB Jr Simon
254 WR Jr Fleming

Note: I think NB McAlister may be out of eligibility and maybe K Ruggles.

Michigan:
78 OT Rs Sr Hayes
112 DT Sr Smith
135 CB Sr Turner
136 OG Jr Zinter
162 Edge Sr Morris
239 WR Sr Johnson
246 RB Jr Corum

Note: I'm not sure but it appears maybe WR Bell, TE Schoonmaker, OC Olusegun, P Robbins, and K Moody could be out of eligibility.

I quit listing Ohio St and Michigan prospects after it reached undrafted projections.

Personally I'd like to see most of our guys come back to shoot for a special season next year. Just as something different for a change.

I would have bet that Brown would have at least a 4th round grade, very surprising

Same, also thought PJ would at least have a grade in a late round. Each board is different but it is telling that people here were talking some guys like Jacobs and Strange that aren't showing up in their top 500 draft eligible prospects.

I think Fashanu is a little more realistic at 20 although I saw as high as 3 on other boards. That just seems unrealistic.

I do think Washington has a decision and the opportunity to lift his grade by a couple of rounds if he returns as a clear-cut #1 WR with a QB that can get him 1200+ yards. Otherwise Porter is gone and Fashanu could be if he wants. Interesting that Fashanu's family may want him to wait though. At late 1st round, that's a lot of dough and while another year might get him top 5 money, it's a lot to wait on.

I'm not as optimistic about Evans and Saunders as reliable deep threats. Both are small in stature and unlikely to win many 50-50- balls against the top B10 CB's. Both will likely get behind some defenses with their speed and especially for Saunders with his route running.

But to have a very good WR group PSU still needs to find a strong WR with some size that can hold his own against the more physical CB's and come down with contested catches. I believe Franklin recently mentioned Meiga as making progress, but Meiga has been mentioned for a few seasons now and it seems he is more likely to portal than emerge as the nexst Godwin.

Hope I'm wrong with all of the above, but I just don't see too much reason for great optimism at WR unless Washington comes back AND PSU finds a physical WR in the portal. But I'll be watching for reports of progress from any/all of the young WR's during Spring practice...........
