Below is from the Penn State release, but I think we still need to replace Huff as RB coach. Is this where the additional 10th coach will coach the running backs?

Ricky Rahne has been promoted to offensive coordinator and will return to coaching the quarterbacks, while former Penn State graduate assistant Tyler Bowen returns to Happy Valley as the tight ends coach and Phil Galiano will be the special teams coordinator and assistant defensive line coach, head coach James Franklin announced today.

Additionally, Franklin announced wide receivers coach and offensive recruiting coordinator Josh Gattis will now be the passing game coordinator and offensive line coach Matt Limegrover will handle run game coordinator responsibilities.

Not yet announced.

Maybe going outside the fold, since the two announced today were insiders, to one degree or another...

Why do we think Blair has any interest in coaching? He has a business or two that he runs, I think. He's been away from inside the game for a long time to get thrown back into coaching in a crucial position such as this. He can do a good job for us with the team and recruits as an ambassador of sorts, which he does some of already.

I'm hoping for a 'big splash' outside hire. Someone who could grow into Run Game Coord in a couple seasons just in case of more staff turnover. I'm guessing Franklin has a couple of home runs in mind.

He does? I wasn't aware that he had coached. Or recruited.
Thomas served as running backs coach at Temple University for eight seasons, from 1998–2005. He played a key role in the development of Chicago Bears fullback Jason McKie, and Jacksonville Jaguars running back Stacey Mack. Thomas was responsible for recruiting in Philadelphia, Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. He was also the team’s NFL liaison and summer football camp coordinator.

Thomas also serves as a volunteer instructor for Football University. In 2008, Thomas and several other ex-NFLers, conducted a youth football camp in Barrow, Alaska. Barrow is so remote it is only accessible by airplane, and the local high school asked Football University for help with the difficult task of building a football program from scratch.

Admittedly, he's had a long hiatus.

Thanks, mn. I do recall that he was at Temple now. I appreciate the detailed clarification for my faulty memory!
I think had he wanted to stay in coaching, he would have. Just my uninformed opinion. He is up at U.Park frequently, and hangs around Lasch and the team at times.

Just wishful thinking on my part.

Chris Eberly or Omar Easy, but Evan Royster is “currently available”.

Alum Gary Brown might be available as a RB coach if Jerry Jones gives Jason Garrett his walking papers at the end of the NFL season. No idea if Brown would be interested in coaching at the NCAA level or if Franklin would have any interest in him. A grad assistant could handle the RB job for the bowl game if Franklin wants to wait for the dust to clear.

Don't think it can happen until January. They have their 9 coaches now and effective in January they approved the budget to hire 10th. So perhaps someone is technically hired for Jan already, just can't officially do it until Jan

Saquon can coach the RBs for the bowl game, fine by me.

Sam Gash was the RB coach for several years at Green Bay. May have coached with Franklin there. Sam was fired last year. Could be a candidate.

E.J. Barthel already on staff as consultant. Must wait until Jan 9 to name officially, wild guess ;)

How about if Franklin hired an experienced running backs coach instead of any of the former PSU players names being thrown about here. I don't care who they played for. His criteria are much deeper than any of us realize.

Brown is the current running back coach for the Cowboys and former Browns running back coach.

True. Point well taken. We fans are just a little bit too nostalgic sometimes. Blinds us to the rational part of process. Nevertheless, at least one of the former players mentioned, Gary Brown, has either been an RB coach or OC somewhere since 2003. He's currently and has been the Cowboys RB coach since 2013. Before that he was the RB coach at Rutgers (2008) and the Browns (2009-2012). I'd call him an "experienced running backs" coach. It isn't mutually exclusive that the person chosen could be both and experienced running backs coach and a former PSU player. Of course, as head coach CJF will try to get the best person for the job.

^^^^^^ This

It’s ridiculous how Penn State fans think of only former Penn State players as candidates to come back and coach, even if they have never coached before.
