If he could have only continued competing in wrestling! Would have been so good for the sport, in USA and the world. Why did he quit? HEW, family, what you think? Serious question.

Not an insider or a wrestling expert like some of you guys but I know Cael has said in the past it is extremely difficult to coach and compete at the same time. Assume he reached his competitive goals and wanted to move onto a coaching career.

Same reason you should quit McDonalds after 15 years, pursue other challenges .

When did he start coaching after he quit in 2004?

Figured there would be an explanation why he quit wrestling competitively after he won a gold. Maybe he can answer this? FLO, bring the question to Cael - IF HE WILL EVEN ANSWER IT!

Cael competed in 2011 and finished 5th in the world. And then went back to coaching full time, which has worked out fairly well.

If my memory is correct, Cael gave up has amateur status to compete in the WWF. Vince McMahon promised that Cael would get preferential status and be granted a shot at the Intercontinental belt within a short period of time. A badly fractured coccyx destroyed that dream so he went into coaching.

I'm going to Spain in September for 2 weeks -- Barcelona and the Basque country (San Sebastian, Bilbao).

Any recommendations for things to see and do, or places to eat and drink?

San Sebastian is beautiful, and September is an excellent time to go (75 and sunny!). Have lunch at La Mejillonera, hit the aquarium, then hike around the hills for stunning views of La Concha Bay. If you want a higher-end dining experience, check out Arzak. Don't know where you're staying, but the Londres Hotel is really cool.

Enjoy your trip!

Cael was the greatest show on earth! You guys have been around Cael long enough now to realize he never looks for affirmation in public perception. Cael marches to his own drummer in life much like he did in wrestling. I would love to hear his reasons for several things he has done, but most of his decisions in wrestling and life have proven to be well calculated and correct. I have no doubt the Gold medal Jake won could have belonged to Cael had he chosen that as his primary life goal. I think he derived as much satisfaction from Varner's Gold as he did his own.

Not sure that anyone has mentioned it yet, but I think that I remember that when he won gold he did so coming out of his first retirement from competition. If I recall correctly, it was almost entirely due to the urging of his athletes.

With that said, I'm not sure that anyone expected him to compete again after that.
