Will 133 Be The Most Discussed Weight Again?

Had thought of Pletcher, but he finished R12 up a weight as a FR, then 4th the next 2 years. IMO he was better, but not sure there was a jump as opposed to normal progression.
His offensive output certainly jumped markedly though. I happen to think Nick takes the rubber match, but Luke was the 1 seed in 2020, and he'd earned it.

True, though not until his senior year.

Most interesting weights rank:

157 - Shapiro, Haines/MM, Robb, Teemer, Franek
149 - Gomez, Lovett, Van Ness
141 - Woods, Bartlett, Hardy, McNeil
165 - O'Toole, Carr (MM would move this up)
197 - Brooks, Ferrari, Hidlay
285 - Steveson, Hendrickson Kerk
133 - Vito, Fix, Nagao
174 - Starocci
184 - Keck, Truax
125 - ?????
Don't forget Elam at 197. I think Mauller is back at 149 too. His finishes aren't top of the podium in March, but he's been on it 3 times and is pretty darn tough!

I'd add Parco at 149 before Mauller.

Also while neither of these guys is a finals threat this year, Pinto and Soldano are both high-risk pinners. 184 is more interesting with their presence.

I'd put Parco right there with Mauller. Looking at WrestleStat, Parco has a 2-1 H2H advantage but they pick Mauller over Parco, 6-5. I'm guessing that is due to commons?

I wouldn't expect either of them to beat Gomez, Lovett (the most exciting wrestler in the NCAA's), or Van Ness but it wouldn't surprise me too much to see them pull the upset.

I hope you're right, but remember Nagao was a redshirt frosh last year, not a true freshman. Probably a lot of his big leaps are behind him in terms of his NCAA career. I'll settle for little steps - this still should see him contending for a title during his time here.

You are ignoring the space dimension of the space time continuum.

Based on recent results to date, including NCAA- and World Championships, Arujau is #1 until somebody proves otherwise on the mat. He's shown a dominance and the will to win, over topflight competition, to a degree I've not seen anywhere else.

Anything can happen but Vito is without a doubt the biggest lock at NCAAs next year except for Gable (who I believe will be at Minnesota second semester)

Agree... Normal progression in combination with not wrestling up a weight class..

The fun internal thought experiment is imagining them all the same weight, and picking who wins the tourney--but still, it's hard to picture how a Vito vs. Gable match would go, right? This line of inquiry is hard to really discuss because of how subjective things are. That's probably why I wouldn't have Vito that high on an NCAA list, even though I'm not sure there's a hotter wrestler in the world right now. It's easy to go with number of titles, combined with best wins, and I think that works well here too, but it does penalize young studs. Keegan winning that bracket last year is definitely worth something. AB has not beaten a national champ, I don't believe. Vito and Mekhi both have beaten a 2xer. Carr too, beating Keegan, and also Shane. Starocci has beaten Mekhi among his 3 titles, so I think maybe he's my #1. So many factors. The debate can never end....

That said, I think we can all agree that you have to reallllly reach to find a metric to have Fix as 3rd on this list. That's just insane, and he's obviously a very good wrestler.
AB has been the defending champ at 184 for the last 2 years... so, what other national champ should he have wrestled since his freshman year? What am I missing here?

You’re not missing anything—every model used in this discussion is flawed. His weight class hasn’t had the churn 165 has, for example. AB is my personal favorite of the bunch, and my pick to win the imaginary P4P bracket based on our old friend, the eye test.

He hasn't had that opportunity (at least until he beats Ferrari), and that's not his fault.

Still, facts. Others have beaten returning champs.

There’s going to be a bit of a bias in using wins against former champs as a quality measure when your team has 3 or so times the number of individual championships of the next couple teams.
Yeah, right. It's a lot harder for PSU to have wins against former champs unless we're talking about beating Nico in the room again.

The fun experiment would be watching Daton Vito match.

Oh, right. Lol. Good homework on that list.

Dangit. EyeTest is back.

I'd just be pleased that he's eyeballing male wrestlers this time.
