First of all Willie’s rankings are the best. I am stuck at work at looking at the newest rankings. It appears kids who wrestle the most constantly get bumped around. Kids who go into hiding and barely compete just stay the same. For example- PJ Duke is now P4P #1. He is a stud and I hope we get him at PSU but he barely wrestles compared to Lilledahl. Luke and some others seem to compete against the best competition every chance they get. Yes they will take some loses. Hopke, Merrill and Ferrari are the others in the top four. As an old school guy, this is my hold up with rankings. These kids get into certain spots and then quit putting it on the line, trying to hold the spot. It’s like a UFC fighter winning the belt and then not putting his title up for a while.

Like I stated, Your rankings are great but curious on this and if you look at who puts themselves out there.
Do you think the college coaches want the kids who compete all the time vs the Marc Anthony Mcgowan’s who only wrestled a hand full events?

Thanks Willie

PJ duke is a zain like wrestler, punisher, very dominant, would look great wrestling for PSU
I agree 1000%. We need Duke but I am saying if he wrestled as much as Lilledahl he would drop some matches. He is a generational talent.

Link to willies rankings or is it behind a paywall?

Is really beneficial to wrestle every event. I have heard of kids wrestling 100+ matches a year, is that the best long term. Would love to see some studies on this, I recall reading that the top Russian wrestlers wrestle far fewer matches than ours at the high school level. I wonder if some of those just limit the number of live matches

I disagree to many matches are killing these kids burn out etc etc

As an ex-National Level swim coach, I was always told that Russians kids did not start competing (in swimming) until they were 12. That left plenty of time for stroke development before they had to deal with the pressures of competition, where far too many youngsters have their stroke mechanics breakdown.

Here in the US I have watched 6 year olds competing in Butterfly with totally wrong mechanics. Parents screaming from poolside and stopwatches calibrated to the 1000th of a second in search of a PB (personal best). Too much, too soon.

sorry BrockBronson. i only now just saw this thread.

and thanks for the compliments.

P4P is an inexact science for sure. the thing with Duke though is that he was injured at Ironman. had to have surgery. didn't even wrestle at state tournament. he's still on the shelf. he's supposed to be cleared to do light drills and stuff in a week or two.

can't ding him for that. other than a wonky CD Trials last year where he was in between weights, he's been almost perfect. Ironman title and runner-up (to Kasak), 2nd-1st-1st at S32 + a Fargo title.

That is true. I hope we get Duke at psu.

So @Willie do you take in consideration the wrestlers who win something big and then go into hiding for months without competing. Then the other hand, someone like Pierson who battles all the time and yes even takes a lose here and there. Wrestling all the big events has to factor in to the body of work. USA wrestling is using the new PINs system for seeding. It factors in the body of work.

Another question I heard people chatting about at NE Regionals. You are the originator of Who’s number one. Why is it based on freestyle results and then wrestled Folkstyle rules? It’s supposed to be the #1 ranked guy going into folk. For example Jude Correa basically had a perfect Folkstyle season. Doesn’t do much freestyle and now won’t have a chance at WNO.

The Trials winner (world teamer) vs Fargo winner. That doesn’t make a lick of sense, but most things at FLO doesn’t

Can't blame Willie for WNO. It was his idea, but FLO runs the show now.

how it usually works is that if a kid doesn't wrestle for a long period of time i don't drop them, but if and when they lose they drop harder/faster.

Not sure what you're asking about Pierson. i have him ranked #2 at 138 which i think is fair.

The PIN ratings are very flawed.

It's based on totality b/c that's the nature of competition in America. we wrestle two styles and the results most recent and relevant prior to WNO are FS. im not sure i understand the beef here.

Why would Correa not have a chance at WNO? he's clearly a selection at this point in time.

Thank you for the answers. No beef. Just wish WNO would be freestyle. I just mean Pierson just lost this weekend does that drop him. My point was he is most battle tested wrestler in America with the amount of matches, if he loses here and there it shouldn’t hurt him as much.
Great show as always

@smalls103 what does psu do with the class of 2025 if you are Cael?

Great show today!

When will you get into Iowa Gambling Scandal and which athletes are involved.
thanks.

2025 Big Board Show tomorrow where i'll talk about where i think they go (although to be honest it's so early. i don't know much quite yet)

i talked a little about Iowa gambling stuff on today's show but didn't get in to names.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in getting Pierson. To be fair the Manvilles haven’t done all that well at the college level. Although I like Pierson and know he is tough. I’m not sure where he would fit into the PSU line up.
thanks.
