Women's Hockey: Coach Brandwene retires

Is this going to be Sandy's first coaching hire? Or did she also hire the T&F/CC coach?

Has she hired a new Gymnastics coach yet? (I don't recall)

The Track coach, IIRC, was already in charge when Babs was hired (he had already been the long time 2nd in command, I believe) though he may have still been "interim" as the head honcho when Sandy first took over

In any event - Women's Hockey? I don't think she can do ANYTHING of impact no matter how good/bad the hire quality may be.

Unless, of course, she pays out any appreciable amount of $$$$ for a new coach.

Smartest move would be to take whomever is the current second in command (assuming they are not splashed with any of the issues that surrounded the HC) give him/her a $20,000 raise and tell them they get to have the big desk now.

No point to spending any money searching for and/or hiring a new Women's Hockey coach.

He took a family medical leave of absence in January. I'm guessing that this sudden retirement is related to that. Hopefully things turn out well for him and his family.

I was not aware of that and was wondering why he would retire at his age.

While his family situation is unfortunate, this could be good for the women's program. They have been mediocre at best.

With the gymnastics season still ongoing, I would not expect to see anything until the season ends and coaches are more available to interview etc.

He wasn't a very popular guy with the girls in the program. Don't know if that has with his "retirement." Hope the next coach does a better job. If you've ever been to any women's games at the BJC you know the attendance is pathetic and the team's often overmatched.

No wonder no one shows up at the games......whodathunk they would be holding them at the BJC?

Seriously though, NOBODY draws crowds for Ladies' Hockey.

I think Minnesota has won several NCs as of late (or been really, really good anyway) and in the heart of Hockey Country.

I think tickets are free (at least for students anyway).....and still nobody goes.

Its kinda' like having an armadillo high jump contest.....even the armadillo with the world's best hops isn't very enticing to watch.

Both coaches that suffered criticism and charges by team members of emotional abuse last year, Jeff Thompson of WGYM and Josh Bradwene of WHKY, failed to complete their respective subsequent seasons. Thompson was fired in late February and Brandwere took a leave of absence for "family medical reasons" in January.

The search is underway for a new WGYM coach. I'll be surprised if Dean Jackson doesn't have his "interim" tag removed and be promoted to the top job for PSU WHKY. Jackson was very successful at his previous stop as HC for Elmira College WHKY (Div III).

Don't be so sure. I know Digit Murphy expressed interest when the program was starting. Better credentials but....

Do you mean to imply such a hire would be "impactful"?

"If a tree fell in the forest........."

BTW, a somewhat related note, FWIW:

".....A common misconception of Title IX is that it applies directly to coaching salaries. While the salaries for coaches of women’s teams are increasing, they still lag far behind that of the coaches who lead men’s teams. Generally, a men’s basketball coach may be paid 2 to 3 times more than a women’s basketball coach at the same school.

Title IX is limited in its ability to address these disparities because it was designed to help students. Title IX requires comparable resources and equal opportunities to be provided to both male and female athletes........

Title IX is student-focused, which limits claims for disparities in coaching salary. Equality under this law requires equal treatment, which is reflected in the quality of the coaches hired, not the salaries they are paid. Recourse for discrepancies in salary will have to be found in other legislation or driven by an increase in the external market value for coaches of women’s teams....."

Not that any of that would matter to anyone at PSU :)

Sorry about the brain fart on the Pegloo, guys. Nonetheless, having been to three women's games there since they started playing in the location, I've never seen any semblance of what anyone outside of a Pitt football fan would refer to anything that would classify as a 'crowd." As for the coach, I have a young neighbor lady whom played hockey under the Josh Brandwene regime and she had many unkind words, many of them unprintable, about his methods and results.

Impactful in the sense that Barbour could hire someone that already took part in a lawsuit against their employer.

LOL - Well I guess THAT could be a bang-up move :)

That would be like hiring someone who was so awful at their job that their current employer had them sit in an empty broom closet during work hours - so as to minimize the harm they could do - and giving them a $500,000 raise and a five year contract ta' boot!!!!!!!

Just thinking out loud here -
With the news that PSU will host WHKY's Final Four in 2022 (only 5 years out, but sounds like about 25 for some reason), this may be the opportunity to max out on whatever 'heights' of overall success this program can reach in the near term wrt recruiting, wins, post-season, and even attendance (what is an average fan attendance at a better WHKY program home game? 100? 150? 200?).
Maybe Jackson is the right coach, but the nationwide search should bring in a bunch of top candidates who at least express some genuine interest in the job. Whoever gets the job will be given the chance to get us into the playoffs and more with a home-ice advantage.
Even as the most casual of fans of WHKY, I'm interested in seeing how this plays out.
