Wow the VA shooter is updating his Twitter

My problem isn't guns or people owning guns, its how easy it is for them to buy guns, how little back ground there is, and how little training most states have when you get a carry permit.
That is a fair and reasonable argument. Coming at it from this perspective I think would make even those furthest right engage in a conversation about what we can do.

Of course you are correct.

The same people who want to protect the gun by calling him a nut would be the first to protest the use of an insanity defense. Some people want it both ways if it is their way.

You can be a "nut" and still know the difference between right and wrong.

The main difference between the countries listed and the US is they don't have nearly as much inner-city, drug and gang related violence as we do. A very high % of our murders come from those inner-city areas. It is already illegal to purchase or own a gun in this country if you have a felony record or mental illness that meets the criteria. Now, that criteria could be adjusted and reporting rules changed. The only people left to make gun ownership illegal for are citizens with no criminal record or mental illness.

But that just begs another question --- why does the United States have so much inner-city, drug and gang related violence?

Germany has pretty low numbers on that list. Only 5 states of the 50 (NJ, RI, MA, CT, MD) have a population density higher than what Germany does AS A WHOLE. Munich & Berlin are just as densely populated as Chicago. Point being, those cities have "inner-cities" also.

I saw this shooting live on TV this morning. I watch this news channel everyday. Surreal to say the least.

Population density is not the only or even the main statistic here. The difference is cultural. You ask why we have that problem more than the countries listed. I'm not sure how to answer that, but it has nothing to do with gun control. In fact, I'd say the bad actors in that environment aren't even aware what the gun laws are and are unaffected by them.

funny all I heard and saw on the videotape was a handgun shooting people, lots of gun shots, but no nuts. So the video would seem to contradict you and suggest it was a gun shooting that killed those people......
ANOTHER DUMBASS. The gun pulled its own trigger..yeah right

If I believed gun regulations would actually end gun violence or prevent these types of things, I'd support it. You can think I'm a nut if you want, but I don't support regulating things just so I can feel good about it if I don't believe it will actually help prevent what it intends to.
Do you support speed limits?

Check the stats for violent crimes committed by legal permit ( CCW) holders and compare the rate to the general population. In Illinois there was a recent murder suicide by a CCW holder. That was the only violent crime committed by any Illinois permit holder this year out of 120,000 people.

The nationwide rate is app 380/100,000. The lawful gun owner might be the lowest crime demographic there is, contrary to the whining of the gun banners. And now explain how restricting the law abiding will work/

Who said the NRA needs to do anything? And btw, I'm pretty sure there was a bill just recently submitted for consideration in the Senate that is backed by the NRA that has something to do with mental illness being reported to the government for purposes of background checks when purchasing fire arms. This guy was obviously mentally disturbed, if not ill.
Watch the Frontline episode on the NRA to see just how much of an impediment they are to meaningful gun control in this country.

Meaningful gun control? There are assumptions in that statement that these ideas will work. They won't . Most gun violence is an inner city drug trade / gang issue.

Oh, please stop being so, you know, logical.

So I left Rivals (was a premium member), haven't posted since. Came on here to see if any of the crazies were blowing up Rutgers bc that's always one of my favorite things to read. I had no intention of posting but you all do realize that it is ok to agree to disagree.

A Penn State message board discussion between 10-20 people is not going to change anything, you all do realize this right? in addition why in the world are you all getting this worked up on a message board talking about gun control and all this crap when today we should be mourning this horrible tragedy and praying for the victims families.

The problem with BWI (and why I left to go to TOS) is that EVERYBODY has to win the argument and there is literally NO decent discussion, is just a circle jerk of back and forth garbage of posters yelling at eachother just so they can have the last word. Its pretty disgusting that this thread which should be almost a memorial two these two innocent young adults and yet you have people here yelling and screaming at eachother... GROW UP. Be thankful that you didn't get a call this morning saying that one of your loved ones was murdered. think of these families.

Gun Control is the LAST topic that should be discussed today, down the road in court, yes; but not at a penn state message board. It's pathetic and disgusting, I honestly thought I was reading the same kind of garbage arguments that happen every other day when a troll posts something about us being a cult and it goes from there... Pray for these families but just shut up about making this political. It's a tragedy, NOT a back and forth argument....

Be careful you don't fall up there from that high horse. Give me a break with the self-righteous baloney.

For the most part, this thread has been rather civil, maybe you're a bit sensitive. Also, you must be unfamiliar with the (paraphrased) saying that "never doubt that a small group of committed people can change the world, for indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." If a group of 20 folks debating something is irrelevant, what is relevant? Only large conventions? How do you think each of the individuals in a large group ever came to form their views.....likely through debates among much smaller groups.

This is one of the most pretentious, sanctimonious posts I have ever read on this Board.

The real issue is the untreated mentally ill. The media loves to push these types of attacks in our faces and the majority of people lap it up. Columbine, Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, the Colorado shooter, this incident in Virginia. All of the shooters were obviously in mental health distress. We need to get better at recognizing the red flags for someone who is about to break. Unfortunately many of the people who work in the field I work in are poorly trained or unmotivated to truly get to the bottom of what may be going on with a person. Mental health treatment in this country sucks and is driven by Big Pharma. We are medicating the crap out of our kids for stuff that is actually normal behavior in many cases. These psychoactive drugs may actually be behind why some people go off the rails. Too many people want the easy way out because taking a pill is a lot cheaper than going and having an extensive evaluation by someone who actually understands mental health problems.

IMO its pretty simple...It's our culture and how things have been going in this country the last 20-30 yrs. The family is begin decimated, God being removed from everything possible, and all the lack of personal responsibility. Brng these things back and I bet stuff like this happens a lot less.

Amen to that, harjeff ...

About 30 years back I read something about the crime rate in certain cities being a function of a "lack of roots". Our society has become so increasingly transient (economics driven for the most part) and the influence of having a caring family nearby has decreased. Quite frankly, too large a percentage of our population in our country has no "roots" which is where we, as individuals, derive our value system.

I really hate the "it takes a village" theme that a certain presidential candidate trumpeted in the past, what it really takes is a FAMILY.

Oh boy, now we brought religion into a gun control debate. Now we just need some abortion and politics posts to really set this thread ablaze!

Don't have to watch. I'm a card carrying member of the NRA. I know exactly what impediment they are to meaningless gun control measures.

actually violent crimes are at 30 year lows, and even law enforcement is at a loss to explain it. Schools are safer, yet we have seen the violence contained to these mass shootings.

BUT, that doesn't mean we as a society should ignore the damage done by these mass shootings

Thank God France has gun laws or else that crazed crusader who was subdued by unarmed American Marines (and others, I know) would have never been able to get on a train with a semi-automatic weapon (or two?).

Same goes for Norway where those campers were all wiped out. What are the gun laws like in Norway? How did those laws work there?

I think it would be advantageous to ARM camp counsellors (after a thorough background check and passing a rigorous training regimen) at kids summer camps. I would feel better about my kid being isolated in a remote area if SOMEONE had means of DEFENSE!

Look out the window. It is no different in the real world.

I think you need to separate isolated incidents versus overall statistical trends.
