Eh, sounds like basic tier 2 hazing: pretty severe, but not the worst.

Par for the course in the 70's-90's. Now, apparently, it's PTSD-inducing.

Maybe I think this way because I've never been in a frat or a frat-like group but whole idea of an initiation ritual where you have to do demeaning stuff seems demeaning in itself, regardless of what the actual stuff you have to do is. I mean, some kind of ceremony is fine but the idea that you have to debase yourself in some way in order to be one of the group just seems creepy.
