Not convinced Rodgers is top class. He is certainly not close to Wenger, Van Gaal or Mourinho. I would say he is on par with a guy like Roberto Martinez. He has been severely outclassed this year by the top managers.
The last two games were prime examples. Against United particularly he was out maneuvered. I am not collecting a pay check from a Premier League team, but it was obvious to me United's pace with their two wing backs, Valencia and Young, were going to neutralize Sterling and Sturridge on the flanks. A good manager would have played a target player and had at least one, probably Sturridge, if not both of them playing pinched inside behind the 9. Liverpool has trouble doing that because instead of getting a target player to pair alongside those two they bought Ballotelli. A guy who has all of the attributes necessary to be a first class number 9 except his brain is the size of a pea and his ego the size of a small star. With a target player the game would have come down to a battle in the MF where Liverpool is strongest. A MF of Allen, Henderson and Coutinho should never get outclassed the way they have the last two games. Maybe Rodgers grows into his role, but I don't see it right now.
United will be better next year. City and Chelsea have the money to maintain what they are doing. The best I see Liverpool doing in the next 5 years or so is fighting for a Champions League berth.
