Yianni Olympic Redshirt

Nick Lee, NCAA champ! That only leaves 133 for the Cael reign. Go get it RBY.

Nick's gotta stay healthy and build on gains made last year. Someone will make it close. I'm curious to see what OkieSt does with its lineup @ 133-149. A healthy Gfeller back at 141 would be a contender.

Tariq Wilson is moving up, and apparently Leeth is moving down while Eierman shirts.

Joey Silva will be good for Michigan -- or does he go 133 with Micic shirting?

Does Keshawn Hayes cut back down to his "natural weight" as previously rumored?

141 could be very interesting.

Obligatory all-time Byers quote:

"Kaden Gfeller does not come across as the most stable of human beings."

FWIW, I saw somewhere (either here or HR) someone posted that Silva would go 133 while Micic shirted. Would make sense, if 141 is the only weight at which Storr could be reasonably effective.

Interesting question on Hayes. I'd bet 'no', as they have "Quinner" listed there, and Hayes vacating 157 would likely leave a gaping hole. But I did not sleep at a Holiday Inn recently . . .

Jaden Mattox might give Hayes some competition @157.

Didn't realize he was back on the team. So maybe not a 'gaping hole' if Hayes vacates 157 . . . but I'm not quite there on him pushing a senior Hayes. Especially if Hayes has planned to go 157 all along and been working on some mass increase.

EDIT: That said, I do wonder whether Hayes plans to challenge Sasso for 149, with the loser going 157. Thus, I could see a scenario where Hayes is not bulking this summer. On the other hand, I could also see a scenario where he doesn't want to be in the same boat he has been the past 2 summers, and just commits to the other weight.

I wonder if Hayes regrets going to Columbus.

After he lost the Avoid Zain and Avoid Jason Wrestle-offs, I wonder which PSU champ he'll get stuck facing this year.

Will Ryan shoehorn him into an Avoid Cenzo Wrestle-off? Avoid Hall Wrestle-off? Or (gulp) Avoid Cassar Wrestle-off?

Key going 141. Pletcher wants to as well. I’m sure Tan Tom will dissuade him otherwise.

Mattox and Cleary will battle for 157

Silva 141, Storr 149

Speaking of Yianni—hope zain is our rep, but can’t root against this kid otherwise:

So if you're arguably the best freestyle wrestler at your weight in the US Koll is so unselfish that he'll support an Olympic shirt. That's really nice of him and something to consider when choosing a school.

Doesn’t everyone ??

I gave ya a nice softball to hit.

Demas can also take Olympic RS not sure what his plans are though
Real Woods will contend come March

Don't believe Demas can Olympic RS - didn't medal at JR worlds and didn't wrestle at the Open this year. Other top returning wrestlers at 141 with Olympic redshirts are Mitch McKee and Kanen Storr, but Storr (as pointed out above) will probably be at 149.

You are correct for some reason I thought he was 3rd at NCAA but he lost to Eierman in 3rd place match

Possibly a decision this week in the Yianni-gate? I hope it doesn't drag on much longer.

Just my opinion. I think he got hosed in that 2nd match. I will support Zain 100% if he is our rep.

So you are implying if Spencer wasn't going to go to Penn State maybe he should have given stronger consideration to Cornell?

I thought Ivies didn’t offer redshirts and Yianni would technically have to withdraw to not lose a year of eligibility. Not that it makes a difference for what he will do, just looking for clarification.

Seems confirmed (retweeted by Yianni himself as well)

That leaves Nick and Demas as the top 2 returners for 141 next year (Gross could move up as well, haven't heard confirmation of that one way or another)

It seems to me that Koll made the announcement more about him and his unselfishness than about Yanni. Is that par for the course with Koll? self-answering question me thinks :)

It was an answer to a question in a 14 minute interview that talked about Yianni, Dake, RTC's, next year's lineup and a bunch of other things. It wasn't some planned special announcement.

Also interesting, Koll mentioned he expects Darmstadt to wrestle 184 this coming season. TBD on Dean (I'm guessing redshirt??)

I take Koll's summertime who-goes-where comments with a grain of salt. A couple of summers ago, he didn't know what weight class a rehabbing Realbuto would be going and speculated incorrectly that it would be 165. Not always a safe assumption that he maintains much contact with his guys during the offseason.

I think this really helps PSU's title chances, especially if you consider Iowa to be the top challenger. Much more gain from Lee going from 3rd/4th to finalist/champ than from Murin having a marginally better chance of sneaking into the 7th/8th match.

The possible mitigating factor would be if the hawkeyes roll out Teasdale/Desanto instead of Desanto/Murin at 133 and 141 if Teasdale can replace Desanto's points and Desanto becomes a title contender at 141.
