Yianni Olympic Redshirt

I think this really helps PSU's title chances, especially if you consider Iowa to be the top challenger. Much more gain from Lee going from 3rd/4th to finalist/champ than from Murin having a marginally better chance of sneaking into the 7th/8th match.

The possible mitigating factor would be if the hawkeyes roll out Teasdale/Desanto instead of Desanto/Murin at 133 and 141 if Teasdale can replace Desanto's points and Desanto becomes a title contender at 141.

I could see that happening, but doubt GT gets them many points in what could be the deepest weight again.

Yeah, I'll believe Desanto is a finalist contender when I see it, but he certainly is a wild card, especially if you believe the reports coming out of the Iowa room.

I never thought of ADS as a big 133, has he been in the weightroom all summer?? I dont think he’ll have anything for Nick Lee.

OT—- has Eireman definitely declared an ORS?

Just following this up to point out that I meant to say Teasdale as a finalist contender. At 133, Desanto is absolutely a finalist contender (as is RBY) with Micic and Fix most likely being on redshirt.

A Desanto-N. Lee match would be very high on my wish-list. The pace of that match would be insane.

I take Koll's summertime who-goes-where comments with a grain of salt. A couple of summers ago, he didn't know what weight class a rehabbing Realbuto would be going and speculated incorrectly that it would be 165. Not always a safe assumption that he maintains much contact with his guys during the offseason.

I'll take your word on Koll's uncertainty regarding Realbuto from a
couple of summers ago. He was definitive on Darmstadt going 184 in the Track interview.

Sounds good. The Realbuto thing was really weird, but if Koll was definitive about Darmstadt, that's more solid than what he offered up in the previous example.

It was an answer to a question in a 14 minute interview that talked about Yianni, Dake, RTC's, next year's lineup and a bunch of other things. It wasn't some planned special announcement.

My only observation was that....if I was asked about Yanni.....I would say...."He is definitely taking an Olympic redshirt" By adding....."It would be selfish of me not to encourage him to take one" was a totally unnecessary addition to the comment. I thought it was a deliberate reference to someone else. My first thought was Brands/Spencer.....my second thought was...maybe even Cael. I just didn't see why that additional comment was anything but a jab at 'lesser coaches than myself' Obviously I could be off base...but that was my initial reaction.

What if the question was "Did you advise him to take an Olympic shirt?"

Regarding the entire 14 minute+ interview with Koll...I found it refreshingly honest. No bias from me … Cael's my guy, and that's all that matters.

I did not think the Darmstadt comment makes 184 a sure thing. Koll's answer was something like 'probably see him at 84', or something along those lines, then a non-committal comment about Dean.

Regarding the Nick Lee discussion, there's plenty of talent at 141 remaining, even after Yianni and Jaydin RS. Demas, McKee, Shoop, and Red are the AA's returning, and there's evidence Wilson and Leeth are going 141. Perry is a past AA, as is Brock, they'll be there too. Woods appears, by far, to be the most talented incoming freshman. Ervin, Matthews, Kinner, and Silva are very good, but not at Nick's level imo. Silva has credentials, but had only had a 1-point win vs Konrath last year and lost to Sherman. I don't believe he'll beat Nick. It's all up to Nick ... work hard, continue to improve, and wrestle with effort every bout.

My answer would be yes I did.....and nothing more. In the interview the question was something to the effect....
"Can you tell us what might be going on with Yanni this year"? His answer was.....Yanni is definitely taking a Redshirt. It would be selfish of me...…. Open for interpretation....could very well be totally benign. When asked about Yanni's chance of success on his appeal...he added in his comments to the effect....."If the internet and fans are to be listened to....we should definitely win" Again.....why say something like that?

Woods appears to be the Real deal. I look forward to watching him wrestle this season. Will be interesting to see what improvements he has made since the Scuffle.

I would definitely sign up for a Lee v. ADS match. I also think Lee would win, he can match the pace & is more skilled, IMHO. ADS has certainly shown improvement since his move to Iowa though.

Eierman was among the very first, if not THE first, to declare it.

We've only actually, definitively, heard about two wrestlers taking the Olympic redshirt- Eierman and Yianni (and Yianni's announcement came from his coach). All other wrestlers (Cornell guys, Fix, Hall, Michigan guys, etc) have been speculation and not an official release/comment from the wrestler or the school.

but how is his muay thai defense

Objectively, I believe you have to give the tank nod to ADS. Lee's strategy has to be to score early and often and then hold the lead, or keep it tight & low-scoring until the end and swipe it with a late score. If he allows it to be a barn-burnin', back-and-forth brawl, ADS takes it on the strength of tank. JMO.

Respectfully, I'm afraid you might have suffered some mild brain damage during your Rumspringa over there on HR.

Has there ever been a match where Nick Lee's gas tank was an issue? I remember him coming back from three down in the third period to beat Joey McKenna. The loss to Tristan Moran was close all the way through, as I remember it. He didn't look good that day, but I don't think you can blame the gas tank.

I do remember DeSanto getting tossed to his back in the last 30 seconds in a barn burner with Austin Gomez. And I remember him losing to Luke Pletcher at NCAAs on a takedown in the last 30 seconds or so.

I'm not saying ADS can't beat Nick Lee. I am saying it won't be because of tank issues.

I totally get where you're coming from, and while I do not necessarily deny some brain trauma, my specific point is that I think Nick has a tendency to get a bit sloppy when the tank is being pushed. I have an image in my mind of a specific match where he was trying to gut out a win at the end of a dogfight (maybe it was McKenna?) and came oh-so-close, but his body absolutely failed him at the very second he needed some extra "umph" to finish off the TD attempt that would win the match (or put it into OT?).

I just can't quite put my finger on that match I'm thinking of . . .

In the meantime, from the other side of the coin, I saw DeSanto outlast Suriano in a match last year. I never thought I would ever see Suriano's tank run down. I'll always give props to DeSanto proving me wrong . . . and perhaps that makes me a little too selective in my memory when comparing him and Lee. Definitely possible. But DeSanto does remind me of a HS teammate who a little something extra that allowed him to never tire. No one ever wore that kid down -- when he lost, it was always because of technique.

I believe the match you are thinking of is against Tristan Moran. IIRC it was more of a hard training week thing in that match, which could be portrayed as a tank issue without context.

Nick had the flu against Moran in the 1st match. That’s why he had trouble finishing shots. In the Big Ten Tournament, a healthy Nick destroyed him.

Thanks for the effort, but I'm afraid that wasn't it. I've now come to the realization that the image I have in my head definitely did not happen this past season, which leaves his freshman season as the only possibility. Which also wouldn't be fair of me to go on. So, brain trauma it is.

I was gonna say Zacherel his gray shirt year.

No, I am hucking it up so hard, since I am notorious comedian. Thanks for the great answer man. I apologize for my stupid question, since wrestlers never change weights at all.

Do you know what the Olympic weights are? He would either have to cut to 143 (Zain & Yianni) or go up to 189 (and run into DT) so expecting him to be at any weight than 163 for the Olympics is definitely not something anyone would expect. Hence the somewhat cryptic response to your question.

Thank you for elucidating. This is an appropriate response to a question that may have been uninformed.

I am with you Bro with only 6 weights to go around there are many tweeners, and we might see a few force a bump up or cut down just to get the right match ups.

For those who think it wasn't a serious question please let us know definitively where Cox, Burroughs, Deringer and Dake are going with absolute certainty.
