Your chance to meet Grantland writer Michael Weinreb

So, a bunch of people get pissed off, each pay $50 to go yell at the guy. The library has a positive cashflow day.
Smart marketing by PSU/Schlow Library.
Public libraries have to make a buck any way they can.

Author of this article: A Failed Experiment

"The Grand Experiment is a failure, and the entire laboratory is contaminated, and there is no choice but to go back and start all over again."

At least the $50 goes to a good cause (Schlow Library) but their selection of this nasty person as their featured speaker is a mystery. Did anyone at Schlow actually read his articles?

Curious, what has he ever accomplished outside of critiquing others?

He is a state college native and as with all things there's a small connection to mike and my dad as he was on a little league team with mike that dad coached. I see his mom on occasion. Hope he stops by the shop.

Maybe he'll have you frame the first page of the article.;)

A nice hometown welcome for Michael:

Truth is...he is no more or less of a douchebag than the guy in Chicago....or that dipshit who's trash gets recycled in the USA Today.
Only difference is that he was able to trade a fortunate (for him) accident - growing up in State College - into a few minutes of notoriety.

Weinreb is infinitely worse than Bernstein. I bet that he never even read the entire Freeh Report before he wrote that crap.

That article is from 2012...as bad at it is, has he written anything since then (about PSU and Joe)? I'd like to give him an opportunity, in a civil fashion, to address that article and see if he still supports it. For one, I'd like to show him this article from Time Magazine (regarding the 2011 team/season):

academic_bowl_rankings2.jpg

Also, this (from the same article, perhaps someone can tweet or email it to him in preparation):

According to the analysis, Penn State graduates 80% of its football players in six years or less and also shows no achievement gap between its black and white players, which NAF says is extremely rare for Division I football teams. (At LSU, by comparison, the team’s black players are 32% less likely to graduate than their white counterparts.) Winning the top honors in the academic bowl further proves the success of Paterno’s “grand experiment,” his idea that major-college athletes could contend for national championships while excelling in the classroom.

Those who write crap like that are simply trying to get a rise out of people.

Michael Weinreb is an extremely talented writer who, as others have pointed out, grew up right here in Happy Valley in the shadow of Beaver Stadium. For some reason, perhaps out of shame, he bought the BOT narrative hook/line/sinker.

He's also been very difficult to engage on twitter. @wensilver offered up an excellent response to one of his articles:

Anyway, really hope Michael's outlook has changed over time, but certainly not counting on it.

Weinreb also wrote "The Night College a Football Went to Hell," a very favorable account of the Fiesta Bowl game against Miami.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=fiesta87

So what? When the chips were down he decided to ignore everything he knew about Penn State football and side with lying snakes like Tom Corbett and Louis Freeh.

He's supposed to be JOURNALIST for crissakes. Anyone who took the time to actually read the Freeh Report could see that it didn't have any evidence to support it's conclusions. There is no excuse for the way he piled on.

He is a Centrebot like the core players in Joes take down....Paul Suhey and Joyner.
They have all fought to scapegoat the FB program and shield the Centre County family members....friends....business partners and government employees.... And the core click on the BOT.

So true, Rip. James Carville was right.

That tells it all.

Sunday CDT (which is nothing more than the house organ for the OGBOT and their water carriers/ballwashers) of course had a laudatory story on Weinreb. I read the first paragraph and got so mad my eyes crossed.

Fifty bucks? The only fifty I'd spend is a non-stop ticket for him on the Hell Express.

The CDT .... Is nothimg ore than a mouth piece for the Centre County Mafia....add Poole... Rad and Walker to Suhey...Joyner and you get the picture. Small town corruption meets big University board corruption and there's a match made in hell.

So now I'm wondering what is his relationship, if any, to the Second Mile.

Here's the thing that infuriates me with Weinreb....What happened to intellectual curiosity? Why is PSU, PA Gov, Freeh, NCAA, Centre County Gov all fighting transparency?. Hmmmmm? It's years on now and C/S/S still have not gone to trial principally because the PA Gov (prosecution) has not been very forthright in how the Grand Jury process transpired as well as sharing the evidence secured with the defense. Did you ever wonder just once why it's taking so long?

WHY? Are you asking those questions?? Are you questioning the wisdom of your own pieces written sometime ago? Are you really looking for the truth or are you just writing for a paycheck?

I EXPECT MORE FROM A FELLOW TOWNIE
So now I'm wondering what is his relationship, if any, to the Second Mile.

Weinreb fancies himself a New York City intellectual, and to push back against the narrative might threaten his perceived status among those whom he considers to be contemporaries.

Conversely buying into the vitriol against his own allows him to further distance himself from Homer/Small Town Boy.

Never underestimate the power of ego.

Z according to the CDT piece he lives in San Francisco but I think you have it figured out. The coastal elites (and wannabes) certainly have no use for State schools, college football, flyover country or Italian Catholic old football coaches. It really is pretty transparent.
