There you go, and I left off a LOT and there WILL be uproar and controversy over the great ones I left off, but those are my ten.

No top 10, but IMO no top ten is complete without My Old School. BTW, did you see the Classic Albums episode on Aja the other night on AXS?

Yes I did and it was incredible. Somehow I left off My Old School and that unreal solo by Skunk Baxter. See, I KNEW I'd want to make changes instantly.

Great topic! It’s late so I cheated and went to the Billboard list. Mine would have included My Old Shool in place of FM.
Rank, Title, Peak Pos./Date
1, "Do It Again," No. 6, Feb. 10, 1973
2, "Rikki Don't Lose That Number, No. 4, Aug. 3, 1974
3, "Hey Nineteen," No. 10, Feb. 14, 1981
4, "Reeling in the Years," No. 11, May 12, 1973
5, "Peg," No. 11, March 11, 1978
6, "Deacon Blues," No. 19, June 10, 1978
7, "Time Out of Mind," No. 22, April 25, 1981
8, "FM (No Static at All)," No. 22, July 29, 1978
9, "Josie," No. 26, Oct. 14, 1978
10, "Black Friday," No. 37, June 21, 1975

Steely Dan's Biggest Billboard Hits chart is based on actual performance on the weekly Billboard Hot 100, through the Sept. 9, 2017, ranking. Songs are ranked based on an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. Due to changes in chart methodology over the years, certain eras are weighted to account for different chart turnover rates over various periods

Definitely this:

Home at Last is my theme song and may be the finest song ever recorded.

"Well the danger on the rocks is surely past
Still I remain tied to the mast
Could it be that I have found my home at last "

Too many to rank some I'll do favs by album:
Can't Buy A Thrill: Dirty Work; Midnight Cruiser; Brooklyn
Countdown To Ecstasy: Bodhissatva; My Old School; Pearl Of The Quarter
Pretzel Logic: Any Major Dude Will Tell You; Pretzel Logic; Monkey In Your Soul
Katy Lied: Black Friday; Dr. Wu; Any World That I'm Welcome To
The Royal Scam: The entire friggin album, brilliant!
Aja: The entire friggin album, even more brilliant!
Gaucho: Babylon Sisters; Glamour Profession; Third World Man
Two Against Nature: Janie Runaway; Jack Of Speed; Cousin Dupree
Everything Must Go: Things I Miss The Most; Godwhacker; Everything Must Go

Add in brilliance in Fagen & Becker's solo releases also.

Don't have time to make top ten but what comes immediately to mind:

Deacon Blues
Hey Nineteen
The Caves of Altamira
Home at Last
Fire in the Hole
and for some reason Babylon Sisters has been running through my head since I woke up this morning

Aside: my fathers name is Dan. At a conference where he was the last speaker before Mike Ditka, he started by saying, “now I know you’re all eager to hear from Iron Mike, but first you’re goin to listen to Steely Dan.” This is who you have to blame for my sense of humor on here.

The Royal Scam from the album of the same name.
Love the instrumental version of Green Earrings.

Always was a fan of "My Old School" for the awesome guitar work by Skunk Baxter. My other one is "don't take me alive" for the great choice of words.

Agents of the law
Luckless pedestrian
I know you're out there
With rage in your eyes and your megaphones
Saying all is forgiven
Mad dog surrender
How can I answer
A man of my mind can do anything

Then I'd go
  • Aja
  • Haitian Divorce
  • Rikki Number
  • Dirty Work
  • FM
  • Babylon Sisters
  • Hey Nineteen (we've all had the coming of age moment when you realize you no longer fit in with the "kids")
  • Reelin in the Years (again, awesome guitar work and an all-time classic song but way over played by the classic rock stations)

How many of you substituted "Alabama" with "Penn State" and "Crimson Tide" with "Nittany Lions" when drunk singing Deacon Blues?

I have a few times.

I play bass in a band that does Reelin in the Years, Peg, Black Friday and Do it Again. Reelin and Peg are quite a workout.

Reelin in the Years and Peg would be my #1 and #2. I'm surprised Reelin isn't on more lists above.....maybe because it's played a lot?

Funny, I saw Dan in the title and the Dan Band was the first thing I thought of. Great minds think alike. I feel some long-winded rants coming on soon.

Yep. Had no idea this was about Steely Dan until I was into the third or fourth post when they said the full band name.

How about this for hidden meanings in lyrics...
Here At The Western World:

"Down at the Lido they welcome you, with sausage and beer"
"Klaus and the Rooster have been there too, but lately he spends his time here"--reference to Klaus Von Bulow and his drug dealer as rooster was a deep slang back then for dealer.
"Knock Twice"--tap the vein
"Rap with your cane"--tie up
"Feels nice, you're out of the rain"--You just got high on heroin
"We got your skinny girl"---the needle is called sometimes a "skinny girl".

And this was probably somewhere in the middle of the road, when it came to hidden meaning and unusual, highly creative and unique lyrics in their catalog.

Many Steely Dan songs have a high sleaze factor to them: Mr. La Page, Cousin Dupree, Jack of Speed, Time Out of Mind, Kid Charlemagne, The Fez, Haitian Divorce, nineteen year olds, hookers in New Orleans, etc, etc, etc.
Hell, even the band name, Steely Dan, is taken from William Boroughs Naked Lunch, it was a steam powered dildo!!

Especially Mr La Page. Everyone's gone to the movies I guess, down in Mr La Page's basement. We know you're used to 16, but sorry we only have 8, as in 8 mm movies. Good lord, you COULD NOT write that song today. LOL.

1. Same Old Lang Syne
2. Leader of the Band
3. Longer
Wait, Dan who?

Ok, let's go with my favorite Fogelberg songs, because the late DF had some great music too.

10. Part of the Plan
9. The Power of Gold
8. Leader of the Band
7. Make Love Stay
6. Morning Sky
5. To The Morning
4. Run For the Roses
3. Heart Hotels
2. The Nature of the Game
1. Same Auld Lang Syne

Rest in peace Danny, you were a true singer songwriter from the old school.

Dupree was a giant perv, but Jeanine had the greatest cut-down line of all time - the dreary architecture of your soul. And your mind has turned to applesauce.

Everything You Did

Where did the bastard run
Is he still around
Now you gotta tell me everything you did baby
I'm gonna get a gun
Shoot the lover down
Are you gonna tell me everything you did baby
Traces are everywhere
In our happy home
Now you better tell me everything you did baby
I jumped out of my easy chair
It was not my own
Now I want to hear about everything you did baby
I never knew you
You were a roller skater
You gonna show me later
Turn up the Eagles the neighbors are listening
You know how people talk
I wonder what they say
I think you better tell me everything you did baby
I never knew you
You were a roller skater
You gonna show me later
You never came to me
When you were so inclined
Yes you could have told me everything you did baby
I know where baby's at
I know your filthy mind
Now you're gonna do me everything you did baby

Every Friday night in our house during dinner we ask Alexa to play a random SD mix.

Too many for a top ten but I always enjoy Deacon Blues and FM.

They were certainly never afraid of the dark side.
