Your top 10 Dan songs right here. Dan fans, be heard...

10. Pretzel Logic
9. My Old School
8. Bad Sneakers
7. Babylon Sisters
6. Your Gold Teeth II
5. Jack of Speed (2vN Version)
4. Caves
3. The Royal Scam

Kid C should probably be in there somewhere. Went from memory/off the top. Probably missing some more that merit consideration.
WOAH, a 2 ranking for Third World Man, which I also love, but which has been dissed by many for being a slow paced melancholy song to end what was a slow paced Album(although it is my second fave dan album) in Gaucho!

A real surprise and well done.

Big fan of Steely Dan.

Your Gold Teeth II has been an earworm for me the last day or so. Came on Sirius XM Deep Tracks while I was pulling out of a cemetery lot after purchasing my burial plot and stone yesterday afternoon.

Not fixin' to die just yet, tho.

Nobody liked Gaucho. It was among their best.

They opened every show for a long time with "Time Out of Mind", and "Sisters" was always a staple in their concerts. Should tell people what Walt and Don thought of it.

They had a lot of trouble and bad luck recording Gaucho. The first finshed masters were lost in a fire, and they had to go back and re-record the entire album. Then, there were one or two songs that didn't make the final cut, that they wanted on there. Still, Gaucho is amazing and is maybe the best sounding and recorded record that was made in the early 80's(Dire Straits Love Over Gold, Toto IV, a few others in that league). You are correct, Gaucho was panned universally, unless you count the hard core Dan fans who are unlike hard core fans of other bands in that they do not discriminate between the early works, and later works of a band. Frankly, if you listen to the title track and listen closely to the drum work, it's among the finest ever done. Jeff Porcaro in my opinion is one of the ten best drummers who has ever lived and how in the world he did that odd time signature with those ghost fills and high hat tricks and did it flawlessly, amazing.

That ditch out in the valley...

Could be.

But, with any luck, up the hill, near the cross, just below the tree line.

How about this for hidden meanings in lyrics...
Here At The Western World:

"Down at the Lido they welcome you, with sausage and beer"
"Klaus and the Rooster have been there too, but lately he spends his time here"--reference to Klaus Von Bulow and his drug dealer as rooster was a deep slang back then for dealer.
"Knock Twice"--tap the vein
"Rap with your cane"--tie up
"Feels nice, you're out of the rain"--You just got high on heroin
"We got your skinny girl"---the needle is called sometimes a "skinny girl".

And this was probably somewhere in the middle of the road, when it came to hidden meaning and unusual, highly creative and unique lyrics in their catalog.

Always liked

Midnight Cruiser
Bad Sneakers
Dr. Wu

But my all time fav:

Barrytown

This, of course, should have been in the Dan Song Thread
[Edit: and thanks to a moderator, it is]

One thing I've noticed is that their hits tend to be my favorite songs. I have listened to several of their records, and the deep cuts don't do it for me quite as much. Josie might be an exception, unless that's also considered a hit.

My favorite band. They're timeless. I've seen them many times, always great. Also caught Larry Carlton in a very small venue -- he took questions from the crowd and told lots of Dan stories. Fagen and Becker were perfectionists -- always wanted the best guys playing with them and they did many takes in the studio to get the songs exactly right.
