Justin Basch interviewed Zahid Valencia and posted it today on his Baschamania podcast. Zahid Valencia interview Not much that jumps out as far as new information other than Zahid's basic comments on his suspension. On a general note, let me just say that listening to the interview made me appreciate Penn State wrestlers even more . . . . Some highlights:

Zahid responds generically to his drug suspension at 22:47. He talks about his actions being "stupid" and a "mistake" and being "humbled". I was naively hoping he might go into some detail, but he didn't.

He is engaged.

He said he was not sure when he would be able to come back from the suspension, but based on conversations with his coaches and lawyer he believes, "closer to yes than no", that he will be able to compete at the "Trials".

When asked who he would like to wrestle first when he comes back from suspension he said, David Taylor. "I would just want to take him out first."

Apparently “Cocaine is a hell of a drug.”

To be fair to Zahid, Basch asked him who he wanted to wrestle most. Who is he supposed to say, pd3? Personally, I want to see him face Yazdani first, but DT is more feasible, and Basch eluded to trying to get the matchup on the NLWC card.

Glad he did the interview considering things are still on motion, good on him. Can't expect him to say much about the suspension given that it's clearly still being worked on, can only hurt himself by saying too much publically. Though it's clear now that it wasn't just an ASU suspension, a lot of rumors hinted that they were the ones who tested him - clearly not.

At least he didnt blame it on his dad.

Zahid apparently doing the interview circuit. Here's another one on Flo: FloWrestling Link.

He's still working on his talking points.

So Basch didn't want to talk about the matchup, but Zahid did and tried to pin him down on it, but Basch eluded the topic? Dang!

(I must admit: while I am mostly not 'that guy' anymore, it gave me particular satisfaction to pull this one on a Librarian. Love ya, brother!)

Free Zahid. He damn sure shouldn't get any more time than Fix. He obviously says Taylor because he knows Taylor is the man at 86kg. He knows he's the one going to be waiting on him if he makes the finals. What do you expect him to say the worst 86kg wrestler qualified lol or Downy?
I like Zahid. He's the future for USA at 86kg if he stays in wrestling. Ohhhh on the list of fantasy matchups I would love to see is Zahid vs Bo. Folk or free. Would have loved to have seen that.

Zahid is a great prospect, no doubt.

The future at 86 kg? Mark Hall and Aaron Brooks will have a lot to say about that. And that David Taylor guy likely has one if not two Olympic cycles left in him.

After all, it is only 3 more years to the next Summer Games. I see DT hanging around. And next time AB wrestles Zahid, he's going to pin him.

I was watching FRL the other day and what Askren said about Zahid, at least in regards to the Flo interview, was that he got the impression that Zahid was more upset that he got caught rather than taking whatever drug he took. I agree with him in that. Other thing that did not sit well during the interview was that he referred to the NCAA's being "taken away from him" rather than I screwed up and cost myself another chance.
