CJF alluded to his concern of the loss of "run ons" when he was talking about Dom Deluca. So there are twenty more scholarships but less overall players. Was the previous limit of rosters 115, which was comprised of 85 scholarship players and the rest "run ons"?

How do you think this falls out?
Positive, more players with scholarship opportunities. I guess many of those who might have "run on" @ Penn State or other BIG programs could end up on scholarship @ MAC or G5 programs.

Negative, puts stress on practice with less players.

Appreciate any comments as I'm short on details.

There will be about 25% more scholarships. I could argue that there will be more MAC or G5 level players now playing D1A.

The higher end walk ons will now get scholarships. I think the schools will process them that much faster. If they cant play then adios.

The thing that bothers me is a kid who is willing to pay his own way wont even get a shot. A lot of those kids wash out real fast but at least give them a shot. Maybe some schools will hold one or two scholarships for those kids and let them tryout. Dont know if that is even possible.

I’ve always been puzzled about concerns over the number of scholarships and/or players. When I do the math, there are 11 positions on offense, 11 on defense, 3 specialists. That’s 25, so (in theory) the roster is four deep at every position with a few extra spots. Not sure how there can be “stress” on practice or how coaches can feel they are short on players.
I know it is not the same, but I see lots of small high schools playing their full seasons with 30 total players and NFL teams getting by with maybe 80 (including practice squad).

This will also have secondary financial impacts as Title IX is still in place. Scholarship s cost $.

Seems like a rich-get-richer situation, as just about every NCAA rule change tends to do.

Definitely impact on non-power-5 conferences but also potentially huge impact on 2nd tier major conference teams. Teams like PSU won't be filling the additional 30 scholarship with walk-on type players, they'll be filling their rosters with players who would otherwise take scholarship offers to Indiana or Maryland or Va. Tech or even Iowa. Especially with the transfer portal, there's not a huge risk from the player's standpoint -- if he commits to PSU and then realizes he can't compete for the rotation, THEN he can transfer to Iowa or Maryland.

I don't know where this leaves developmental programs like Iowa or Wisconsin who have thrived taking 3 star recruits and developing them over 3-4 years into great players. Now they'll have more raw material to work with but no way to hold them. You'll see a lot more players getting good and then transferring to NFL feeder/playoff teams or teams with bigger NIL budgets.

Everyone can not play at a high level. This is not the pros. There are college starters who cant play.

There are about 65 players who are needed each week. Probably another 15 or so who can actually play but are not ready.

We probably lost about 10 players who would have contributed due to injuries and discipline and transfer portal.

It is not just about fielding a team. You need players to practice against them. They need a lot of depth.

A lot of people thought the rich would get richer with the the portal but at the end of the year Alabama did not make the playoffs. There was probably more parity across the board. There were exceptions.

Oregon does fit the rich getting richer thanks to NIKE cash.

PS. Is PSU even going to fill the roster with the extra 20 scholarships? We only took 27. Maybe a couple or a handful over. We will pick up a few transfers.

Remember, there are always injuries (long & short term). Ten less players on a roster and say there are normally about ten who are unable to practice. 105-20, down to 85 (3 or 4 who might be speciaists). Attrition can set in quicker.

IMO it's another dumb move by the NCAA. I remember when scholarships were limited so top schools couldn't hoard all the best players. Now they're offering 20 more scholarships. Which is it? What's the goal here?
