1st, I was amazed how I totally and completely forgot that game. I usually have almost a Rain Man type memory when it comes to Penn State games. For some reason, that game was almost completely erased from my memory banks???

2nd, Gheez, did we have some talent on that team. "Older" guys on the team like OJ McDuffie, Richie Anderson, Gelzheiser, Reggie Givens, Lou Benfatti, Rucci.... and then the next generation stars. A young Kerry Collins playing QB and you could see Ki-Jana Carter on the sidelines on some of those sideline shots.

I believe that was the screwed up year when we were in "limbo" the ass-clown B1G was not allowing us to play in conference yet, some of our old rivals were mad at us for abandoning them, and we accepted our bowl bid in like September.

I was one of the Logic majors and sold my tickets and stayed home and watched it on TV. A PSU grad purchased them for a few of his ND FRIENDS.

NICE TO KNOW THE ND FANs FROZE THIER ASSES OFF!

Even now it warms my heart!

The thing that really stuck out to me was how far Offense (and our Offense in particular) has come since 1992. We ran many plays out of a "full" 3-back backfield and only 1 WR. We'd have 3 backs in a power backfield, the QB, 1 TE and 1 WR.... imagine that, as recent as 1992 we were running many sets with 1 WR.

Whoever #11 was, was barreling through the muck for some good punt returns.

I'd ask Sori who that is but I don't have it on my phone.

It's pretty clear that Reggie Brooks did not secure the 2-point conversion pass that won the game for ND. You can see it hit the ground before he does. Back then those things didn't matter so much.

Great points sir.

One that day, old Joe's offense did work out.

Like on the 3rd and 20 before the fg to make it 9-9, they go full house but hit drayton on a corner route for 23 and get 1st and goal. 3rd and 20 who goes from that formation, and even more so, who gets a first down from it.

And it's not even like we had "pseudo" WRs playing RB. In that group, the only one who would have been classified with "WR skills" was Richie Anderson.

Yea, that specific play really caught my attention as well. It was 3rd & 20, we line up in a full house backfield, no one goes in motion. I believe 1 of the RBs went out in a pattern, Drayton & the WR (believe it was McDiffie) went out. So on a 3rd & 20, our 3 "Receivers" were 1 WR, 1 TE and 1 RB........ And like you said, amazingly we converted it. Lou Holtz should have turned around, found his DC, and fired his DC on the spot.

I was at that game...remember it well and fondly - despite the loss...What an awesome football environment with the blizzard conditions!! Back in these pre-9/11 days, you were able to walk on the field at halftime of ND games. It snowed so hard during that halftime, that my buddy and I walked out to the center of the field and he removed a chunk of grass for his Notre Dame-loving Irish Catholic Father. You could not see more than 2 or 3 feet in front of you! On way back off field, we swung by the PSU sideline where I offered Franny G. some offensive strategy and tactical suggestions. He gave me a look like I had landed from Mars. Baked on that look, we scooted back to our seats before we were “discovered.”
