It sure seems like we lead the league in that department. We're obviously playing poorly, but I didn't give us much chance tonight anyway and I'll be happy with a split in this series. We still have a shot here, but we have to stop the bleeding. Well, just as I said that the Cards added 2 more. No way we win this now.
Let's hope for a brighter tomorrow.

This is why they have little chance to win the division. Without Harrison and Marte, Cards could easily take 3 out of 4 and bury them again this weekend while the Cubs close in. Will not be shocked if they get shut out tonight.

It's game 1 of 4. In the words of Aaron Rodgers, R-E-L-A-X. This was clearly our worst pitching matchup of the series.
Oh, and they have the 2nd best record in baseball. Chill out.
Hard to argue that. They've shown it time and time again. If they split this series, I'll be surprised.
All that may be true, but what is also true is that they have the 3rd best record in baseball so they're beating somebody. They will make the playoffs (we're 7 up right now) and with their pitching they have as good a shot in the playoffs as anyone. Unlike many, this series doesn't bother me. I doubt we get swept, and even if we lose 3 and go 6 back in the loss column, there is still a lot of season left.
Unfortunately its July 9th. We'll see where they stand on October 1st. And even if they finish with the second best record in the majors they are faced with a one and done wherein anything can happen. Very little chance they catch the Cardinals who will be getting healthy over the next month minus Wainwright.
Not owning the Cardinals, likely the best franchise in baseball over the past decade, and currently owning the best record in baseball, is hardly a sign of "no killer instinct." Just about everyone hasn't faired well against them.
In the past 3 years, the Pirates have: made the playoffs twice, currently own the 2nd best record in the league, beat the Reds in the Wild Card playoff game, took the Cards to game 5 in the NLDS, and lost to a pitcher in a wild card playoff game who went on to have arguably the most dominant post-season ever. If that resume is "lack of a killer instinct" and "coming up small" then I should stop watching the game.

And there's nothing anyone who has watched more than 1 year of baseball can do than laugh at the idea that there's "very little chance they catch" a team they trail by a WHOPPING 5.5 games in early July.
Surprising thing I heard, though. Not sure it's true, but teams leading by five games at the break end up winning their division something like 90+% of the time. Also,I don't think the Pirates can respond to their injuries they way the Cards have.
This loss really doesn't bother me. I think we win tomorrow, but even if we lose the next 3, there is no way this team, with the pitching they have, misses the playoffs. Sure the wildcard is a crapshoot, but they get past that game and I like our chances the rest of the way.
