Honestly I am watching the Texas/Ohio State game and saying just qb sneak. If you don't make it do it again. Oh and then a second down wide toss. Teams need to stop giving up real estate when they need a yard. Horrendous play calling.

I don’t necessarily agree that it’s always a quarterback sneak, but I definitely think you lineup in a heavy formation, bring in a FULLBACK, and then if you don’t try to blast it in between the tackles, you have a naked boot option or a couple play action passes off of it.

Honestly, I don’t know why more teams don’t tush push in short yardage situations. Purist hate it. You know what? So does losing.
Especially now that we’ve seen a few variations of that play, giving you options.

So I guess Joe was right in 1979 Bama game? If it works, you are right. If wrong, history and the internet are not kind.

That said, a sweep play against a good penetrating team seemed doomed. At least give it to a qb who can throw it away if necessary.

Yeah a sweep play against Caleb Downs and Lathan Ransom makes no sense. A naked bootleg might be the only thing that makes sense to go wide because the QB can throw it away if it's not there. The pitch, once you've committed to it, you're stuck eating a big loss.

But I get the Texas coaches' dilemma. Penn State feels their pain. A 1st down at the 2 against Ohio State is extremely difficult.

BTW did anybody notice the incredible play made by #6, LB Sonny Styles, on the scoop and score. There's a Texas tailback closing on Sawyer and Styles just runs past him like he's standing still, pulls in front of him and just slows down. Just a perfect obstruction block, doesn't even use his hands, no chance of a flag for block in the back. But in order to pull it off Styles has to be THAT much faster than a Texas tailback. The quality of the Ohio State athletes is just incredible. Man-among-boys kinds of players all over the field.

That whole sequence was a showcase for Ohio State's basically NFL-grade defense. 1st and 2, Texas can't move the Ohio State DT and DE (both gonna be 1st round picks), not one inch. They can't go wide because the Ohio State LBs and safety are faster than they are. And when they try to pass, they can't block Jack Sawyer or catch him after the strip.

It's just a perfect illustration that the games at the highest level are won by players far more than coaches. Ryan Day is no better a coach than James Franklin probably but he has the most talented roster in college football.

And you know something else that's interesting -- that entire defense, other than Downs, is 3rd and 4th year players who committed to Ohio State as freshman. Ohio State loves the transfer portal but this D -- one of the best I've ever seen - was built the old fashioned way.

I saw a You Tube piece that showed how extremely tough it is to score on OSU from around the 1 or 2 yard line.....almost impossible. It's easy to say sneak it in but doing it is a whole different story and I'm sure Texas knew it
