Most know, generally, how the NCAA Wrestling Championships selection process works. Wrestling well during the regular season, and a wrestler should find themselves ranked or rated high enough in 2 of the 3 criteria (Coaches Ranking, RPI and Win %) to earn an allocation spot for their conference for the Big Dance. For some, slots earned are obvious. For others, say those “on the bubble”, the criteria will float up or down till about 29 slots are awarded.
The NCAA starts their Coaches Rankings in late January, this year the 1st release should be on or about January 19th, or next week!! This will be followed by a 2nd release, on or about February 9th, and a final release on or about February 23th.
The first RPI should be released along with the 2nd Coaches Ranking, so on or about February 9th. The Final RPI will accompany the last Coaches Ranking, on or about February 23rd. This final release of both the Coaches Ranking and RPI will be accompanied by the Qualifier Allocation Table for the 8 Conferences.
The terms Gold Standard, Silver Standard, and Bronze Standard are used. A Gold Standard wrestler has met all 3 criteria, and earns a slot for their conference. A Silver Standard wrestler meets 2 of the 3 criteria, and likewise earns a slot. Bronze Standard is used after the conference championships are over, and is used to determine eligible at-large wrestlers. Along with the 3 criteria noted, another 3 criteria are used, and the weighted criteria of 7 metrics, in priority order, are used to determine the at-large awardees (Head-to-head competition — 25 percent, Quality wins — 20 percent, CR — 15 percent, Results against common opponents — 10 percent, RPI — 10 percent, Qualifying event placement — 10 percent, Win % — 10 percent).
This post will be followed later with an early weight class review, and how the Big Ten Conference stacks up for the coveted NCAA Allocation Slots. We’re less than 2 weeks away from the first taste of one of the allocation criteria.
