1st time in 145 years! Winning horse disqualified.

Who was watching this historic Kentucky Derby? They made the right call. It's unfortunate, but they made the right call.

I watched the race but then turned the channel. What happened?

Position meaning his place on the track. Almost caused a crash if you will. The horse that finished 2nd, but really wasn't part of the mess caused by the horse leading asked for a review and they overturned the result.

I’ll confess to knowing next to nothing about horse racing, but there aren’t dedicated lanes on the track like in track and field. If that’s the case, doesn’t the horse in front basically have the right of way to move wherever he wants, similar to auto racing?

not a racing fan except during 3 crown time. it seems there have been collisions worse than this in the past. for you racing fans, how do they figure out who the winner is going to be after a DQ like this? it looked like one horse on the inside knocked into Maximum Security causing some movement. MS looked to move out in the way of another horse. However the horse who had their lane impeded was not the one they gave the race to. with this type of finish, how do they figure out who would have won without the contact?? the announcers all seemed to agree that Maximum Security was the best horse on the track.

The second place horse simply moved up.

Call absolute BS. Reminds me of the referines. And I don’t give a sh!+ about horse racing. I guess we can now have judge panels decide the outcomes of all sports.
I didn't know that the PSU BOT were now judging horse races!

I think it was clearly the right call. Like they said, DQs happen all the time, it’s just usually a Tuesday afternoon and nobody notices. He clearly cut off the horse that was about to pass him up. I’m just glad his actions didn’t get the legs tangled (it was close) because the entire pack would’ve gone down and it’d be glue season in front of 150,000 people.

If this was the 4th race at Philly Park tomorrow, it’s an obvious DQ. It was the right call, but wasn’t sure if they’d be willing to make it on a stage this big.

Ugh....I was so close.

I boxed $1 Superfectas on Country Home, Improbable, Code of Honor, and Game Winner. Game Winner came in 5th. If he replaced Tacitus in the top 4, I would've won over $55,000. Instead I lost another $1. Gross.

Wonder what the differential in gross payout was at various sports books

if you boxed 1 superfectas you lost more than $1

I think it's even more amazing that a horse could ask for a review. He should win just on this skill alone.

I hate that it happened but it was the right call and I had Max across the board too. One of my friends had the exacta correct until they DQ'd Max. Now THAT'S a bad beat.

I’m not knowledgeable at all regarding horse racing, but how are jockies to know what is going on behind them? I haven’t noticed any of them with rear view mirrors.

Country House was a little behind and on the outside when the contact occurred so that jockey would have easily seen what was going on over there and he might have had to swerve his horse to avoid some disaster.

The winner celebrating back in his stall.

I was rooting for War of Will. I think the lane change definitely impacted him and Long Range Toddy. Too bad, because Maximum Security ran a nice race. I'm just glad all horses appear to have come out of it OK.

‘If’, the horse degenerate’s lament.

I’ve been to many tracks throughout the country and watched 1000’s of races and this decision was nothing short of Robbery. The stewards at Churchill Downs owe Jason Servis, Luis Saez and Maximum Security an apology and should immediately reverse what is clearly a flawed decision. The bumping happen at the top of the stretch with a 1/4 mile left in the race, this gave Country House plenty of time to run down Maximum Security who by the way, set the pace and went wire to wire in the slop!! I anticipate horse racing fans at Pimlico to make their voices heard. If Maximum Security wins the Preakness the scene at Belmont particularly the paddock might get a little ugly.

I don’t know. The horse caused all the horses to his right to slow down. Maximum Security never had to break stride. I thought War of Will looked like he was making a move when Maximum Security moved into him.

The same War of Will who finished 5th in the Breeders Cup Juvenile, 9th in the Louisiana Derby and 7th in the Kentucky Derby. Trust me, he was not going to win this race.

I’m not trusting you. He was moving before he was cut off and lost his momentum. Neither you nor I know what would have happened if Maximum Security had maintained his lane.

Okay, let me propose this hypothetical: Switch Maximum Security and War of Will in that exact bumping scenario. Would your opinion that it was a bad decision change?

When Genuine Risk was bumped by Codex and hit in the face with the whip at the top of the stretch by Cordero did anyone get disqualified?

When Scrappy T brought Afleet Alex down to his knees at the top of the stretch at Pimlico did anyone get disqualified?

Did they disqualify Real Quiet who veered out on Victory Gallop twice, 70 yards and 40 yards before the finish line at Belmont?

In 1987 when Gone West fell back and checked Alysheba so bad Chris McCarron had to pull the horse up and nearly fell did anyone get disqualified?

What happened yesterday was small potatoes to the examples I mention in this post. All I’m saying is that the stewards overreacted and made a very bad decision. On a brighter note let’s see what happens in the Preakness assuming both horses run.

Actually Jon White - who knows infinitely more about racing than you - had picked War of Will to win the race.
Jon White liked him because War of Will supposedly likes the track at Churchill Downs. I’m not looking for an argument but realistically speaking why would he like a horse who had a physical issue? If the horse was comprised in the Louisiana derby March 23, 2019 why in Gods name would Jon White (who is knowledgeable) think that he would be ready 40 days later?

Would you meet me half way and admit that (at best) War of Will might have finished fifth if not bothered.
