2018 Team Race

If he goes 125, I'm in the camp that believes he particpates in duals selectively. But if anyone can make that brutal a cut and still perform, NaTo would be the guy. I'm always impressed by his toughness.

As noted previously, the field would not appear to be as tough at 125 as it has been the past few years, especially if Suriano isn't going this year. I think NaTo has a better shot to win 125 than I did a month ago.
Count me as someone who wants to see Lizak choose top on NATO. Is Lizak staying at 125?

Anyone know Fix's plans this year? He looks like a world beater.

Bingo. Most were NOT arguing against pulling Hall's RS, they were saying let the coaches make the decision if and when they think it needs to be made.
This. Guns argument was that the shirt needed to be pulled for team title aspirations. Turned out it didn't - even with Suriano's injury, which wasn't on the radar at that time.

Arguments against, well at least my argument against, was that we didn't need the points and the RS decision shouldn't be made with the team as the primary focus. It can be an input, but you have to look at where the athlete is, now and what you are sacrificing for him in the future.

After the season, we got some insight from Hall himself. HE was the driving force behind the decision, he really wanted it pulled but just had to get his parents on board. The coaching staff felt he was ready, and he was.

Ended up pretty good. He won a NC and got us points that we didn't need to win a team title.

As much crap as Ryan gets on here, I still find it hard to believe that he will be forcing NATO to go anywhere for a better chance at a team title.

IMO, NATO will go wherever he feels he has the best shot to win another title and it dovetails into his freestyle future. There's room for him to do that without screwing a teammate over also. If he thinks he needs to reshape his body (cut some weight) for an international weight, he'll probably be at 125. If not, you would think he's 133 no matter what that means to the team.

I don't know, but if Suriano is sitting this year, he would be my bet on the person with the best chances against NATO at 125. I will be rooting for a 'Poke!

I think he's a tough out even for Suriano if he goes 125. Ryan has already set a standard for his superstars to participate in duals at their convenience (granted, for mostly good reasons), so I don't see why NaTo wouldn't get the same treatment. I'd be pretty surprised if he wrestles the full calendar at 125, but also surprised if he doesn't go 125 in March because that's key to beating out Penn State in Cleveland.

I look at the 2-1 type block and look busy fests he wrestled vs. Nico and wonder why he can't do the same against guys who are not as good as Nico.

Most likely Fix shirts this year with Heil a SR. Looking ahead, best guess:
2017: 125 Piccinnini, 133 Brock, 141 Heil.
2018: 125/133 Fix and Pitch in whichever order, 141 Brock.

I threw this together pretty quickly but figured it'd spur some good discussion and get at least a few people foaming at the mouth from which they breathe.

Thoughts...

133 - Clears out some from last year (3 of 8 graduate, and Tomasello goes 125, maybe?), Pletcher (if he's @ 133) and Keener both could place, albeit 7th/8th, imo.

141 - Wouldn't surprise if neither team (PSU or tOSU) has an AA. Back are Heil, Jack, Meredith, Eierman, Ashnault, Kolodzik, and Thorn (all AA's), and they're joined by Storr (ISU), Red (Neb), and Lewallen (OSU).

149 - What's McKenna going to do? Key component in this entire discussion.

157 - Jordan @ 5 looks reasonable, Nolf, LaVallee, Kemerer, and Smith in front, Berger, Tsirtsis, Lewis, and Fox chomping at his heels.

165 - Joseph @ 4 a little pessimistic. Doubt Campbell AA's...Joseph, Martinez, Massa, Rogers, Walsh, and Womack (all AA's) are back, joined by A. Valencia (?? unless he goes 174), Steiert, Matthews, Marinelli, and McFadden.

184 - This will be a tough weight class, especially if Z. Valencia goes here. 5 AA's depart, but Zavatsky returns, and Abounader comes off RS. I like Bo. Martin a toss-up between 3rd and 5th, imo. 4th is fair, though I'd go 3rd.

197 - 4 AA's graduated. Looks like Moore's to lose. Big question here...where does McCutcheon/Cassar fit? I REALLY like Matt, in his SR Season. Healthy, he can go 4th to 8th, imo. Moore, Haught, Renda, Miklus, Weigel, Smith, Rotert, Conel all here, though I like Matt against all but a couple of those guys.

285 - Coon, Stoll, and Dhesi added to the list of 4 returning AA's, of which Nick was one. Snyder a lock, and I personally think Coon is also at a higher level. Nick from 3rd to 7th, 5th is fair.

Nit pick all you want (see what I did there), but things look bleak if we don't have 8 scoring wrestlers at Nationals.

I quit trying to forecast or make predictions. I had things so tight last year going into the NCAAs and by end of Friday night I felt like a fool.

Feeling like a fool is one of the best parts about forecasting & predicting! Bring it, JS!

Also, I'm coming out to Nemacolin next weekend, probably doing a cheap night in Uniontown before droppin the big coin at the resort. You anywhere near either?

Suriano is so good he can gas Nato from the bench? ;)o_O

I think the Hall redshirt debate was more about 21 Guns being beligerent and infecting every thread with his babble and others getting agitated at him. Most simply trusted that Cael had a plan.
Speaking of 21 Guns.... anyone notice his disappearance after adamantly stating McKenna is not going to Ohio State, he's going to PSU, and NATO is not going 125. He knew this for a fact. I wonder if this hiatus lasts as long as the one he took after the Big 10 tournament.

I'm about an hour and a half drive to resort. Thanks a lot for the invite would love to meet but unfortunately I'll be in Virginia for my grandsons birthday.

You need an emoticon with this, you can't be serious. Especially after we beat this to death earlier this year. With only 5 repeating NCs we may as well not show up at nationals.

Is the main thought that if McKenna transfers to Ohio State he then moves up to 149? Or is it that he will go at 141?

Nickal 2 and Martin 4. Who is beating Nickal in the finals?

Probably Zahid Valencia. I was trying to be conservative with my PSU predictions for the sake of discussion. Clearly we could out perform a few of these numbers and OSU certainly could fall short.

I was thinking he was pretty big and could see him moving up. I do think that Hall will out score the 22.5 since he had 2.5 bonus points and he'll be a full 174 lber this year. Going to be fun.

To me, placing Cenzo 4th is being somewhat dismissive of what he did in March. He didn't beat IMAR in a fluke bout. He won the title in all positions. He beat Massa in the semis. This is all as a freshman. He should only get better from being in the room another year and the confidence his title has given him. Can he lose? Sure he can, but no more so than Hall or Nickal imo.

Here's a question.

Let's say this thing comes down to the very last match on Saturday night. We'll assume that Nolf and Retherford have already won. And we'll also assume that the order of weight classes doesn't matter. We are tied with Ohio State.

You can choose from the likely contenders, if you wish, and you can pick whether the final matchup is between Penn State and Ohio State, but this is more a question of clutch. Which of our wrestlers do you want taking the mat?

If Zain and Nolf have already won, last match of NCAA's and need a win, I'll take the 2 time junior world champion Mark Hall, very cool wrestler, would not panic. If I need bonus, give me Bo.

I would love to see Bo vs Martin for the individual and team title.
Would be even better if Martin needed bonus for the team title.
But I think Valencia will be there not Martin

The first time I used an emoji here it was by accident. I accidentally found out that, even with JavaScript turned off, when you type an old-school text smiley made of a colon immediately followed by close-parenthesis, it will show as a smile emoji. Also, when you type a text wink-smiley made of a semicolon immediately followed by a close-parenthesis, it will show as a winking smile emoji. Does anyone know if there are any other text-smiley shortcuts?

I'll bet the Icelanders have got mad emoji game!
