2019 Recruiting Class Thread

Hopefully none of the 2019 class is forced to being involved earlier than needed next season with the fraternity fight last weekend and having some PSU football players involved, including starters.

Previewing a massive pre-Signing Day weekend

The battle for Top247 safety Nick Cross has heated up. Committed to Florida State since September, the No. 4 safety in the country hosted Penn State coach James Franklin and staff members on Thursday, then flew down to Georgia for an unofficial on Thursday night which come Friday afternoon he flies to Harrisburg to meet his parents to drive over for his official visit in State College. The Nittany Lions need Cross in the class if they’re going to pass the Wolverines for the No. 1 haul in the Big Ten and it seemed trending that way until this late curveball with Georgia. The Bulldogs have been pushing hard over the last few weeks and Cross also visited on an unofficial during the fall. Seems like that one could still go either way.

Virginia Tech takes its swing at Top247 offensive tackle Doug Nester, who was at Penn State last weekend and Ohio State two weekends before. Nester has been a verbal to the Buckeyes since August of 2017 but PSU at the very least has made this one interesting and the Hokies have hung around as well.

ESPN's Tom VanHaaren predicts that Florida State four-star 2019 verbal S commit Nick Cross will flip to Penn State.

Cross (6'1/205) committed to FSU in early September, but has been exploring his options in the interim. He will be taking an official visit to Penn State this weekend. Maryland and Georgia are also receiving serious consideration from the four-star safety prospect. Adding some smoke to VanHaaren's prediction of a flip, the rest of FSU's defensive backs class largely seems to be locked into place. Reading between the tea leaves, Cross' decision to continue to take visits could be an indication that he feels he might be able to find a better situation with another program. Cross ranks as ESPN's No. 126 overall recruit for the 2019 cycle.

ESPN's Tom VanHaaren believes that Ohio State four-star 2019 verbal G commit Doug Nester will sign with the program.

Nester (6'6/314) has long been in the Buckeyes' corner, having initially committed to the program all the way back in August of 2017, but he has been exploring other options this winter. Penn State is the big contender to watch, here, with the Nittany Lions drawing an official visit from the four-star guard this past weekend. Virginia Tech is another contender to keep an eye on, but VanHaaren counts Penn State as the most realistic threat to OSU's signing of the Huntington, West Virginia, native. ESPN ranks him as the No. 72 overall prospect in the 2019 class.

ESPN's Mitch Sherman lists Penn State's linebacker corps as one of the reasons for optimism for the 2019 season.

The best of these linebackers is Micah Parsons, a rising sophomore who, as Sherman notes, showed star potential during his freshman season. The Nittany lions also are bringing in five-star LB Brandon Smith, and Cam Brown along with Jesse Luketa give Penn State depth. The star here, however, is Parsons, and if he takes another step like expected, he should help PSU have one of the best linebacking groups in the country.
