Facundo is our only guy that I could identify in the brackets, wrestling at 74kg in the junior division. Let me know if I missed anybody.

Looks like the Hawkeyes sent a decent contingent with DeSanto, Cassioppi, and Warner among others.

Former Lion Brody Teske is at 57kg in juniors and former State College Area wrestler Cole Urbas (now at UPenn) is at 86kg, also in juniors.

57kg in U23 might be the most stacked bracket with names like Courtney, McKee, Schroeder, Foley, Glory, Medley, and Aguilar. 65kg junior is up there as well, with Saunders, Chittum, Alvarez, Zargo, and Voinovich.

Who are you looking forward to seeing this weekend? For me, it's Hunter Catka (125kg juniors) who went to high school in the next district over from where I am now.

A lot of hawkeyes competing. Wouldn’t be surprised if they wind up with a few guys on the U23 team

desanto, murin, happel, young, brands, warner, and cassioppi all in the quarters.

penn RTC is having a good day with colaiocco, kropman, and barczak all in the quarters and 17 (!!) juniors still to wrestle.

yea,
Valencia goes down 15-10. Facundo faces Truax next. Truax was on Valencia's leg at will the whole match. Cael looked sluggish.
Yea, both were pretty tired. Cole Urbas is down.... I think he got hose on an exposure

Might Facundo go at 165 for us instead of 174/184?

After RBY's COVID case, I understand why they didn't send anyone from PSU/NLWC to wreck the Junior/U23 brackets, but man, they could really clean up at a couple of weights. AB, Starocci, Nick Lee, etc could just wreck those brackets.

He might actually be a guy who is hurt the most be guys sticking around an extra year. If he took a gray shirt and a redshirt (no idea his actual plan). He would perfectly line up with Brooks' graduation.

I can't see the guys at the top of the lineup going up just because there is no were to go. Beard and Lee are both ranked #13 entering their redshirt freshman years and they might be the "weak" spots (I say that basically laughingly).

165: Joe Lee could be here through 2025
174: Carter Starocci '25
184: Aaron Brooks '24 if he doesn't redshirt
197: Michael Beard '25
285: Kerkvliet '25?

I think we've probably seen enough to say that Facundo isn't quite the elite, "can't miss" recruit that many anticipated 2 years ago. The guy that he reminds me of in terms of trajectory is Travis Wittlake. As a sophomore, Wittlake was the guy everybody wanted, but he didn't become what people expected, getting passed by a few guys by his senior year (Aaron Brooks for example).

The good news for this comparison is that despite a "disappointing" senior year/true freshman year at OSU, Wittlake ended up having an outstanding freshman year last year. Penn State has a great track record, so he's going to a good place to break through the wall he's seemed to have hit the last year or two. Also, as another poster noted, you guys are really deep at his weights, so if he doesn't pan out, you still have other guys.

To make clear before I get jumped on, he's still a great recruit! Just not a program changer a la guys like Nolf, Zain, Brooks etc...who were ready to compete for titles the day they stepped on campus.

Truax is no joke! I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t win the whole thing.

Facundo vs. Valencia next in conso-quarters...

Ok, I’ll jump, lets not forget guys like Nico (although broke out big time) MattBrown,Frank, who also werent program changers. I‘ll make my judgements after C3 has him for GS and RS years. By then, (and isnt that what really matters?) I bet he changes your mind.

Facundo on to the conso-semis with a 4-1 win over Valencia...looked good and in control, score separated with a desperate throw attempt in the last second by Valencia, it was 2-1 before that.

Oh and Truax crushed his opponent in the semis!

Right, which is why I pointed out that he's going to a great place to development. The point was that many thought he would be a guy who can compete for titles from the first day on campus and I don't think he's there right now.

What you hope for is another Starocci, who had similar results at the end of his high school career and made an insane jump right away in the room.

Also, Truax is going into his third year in college while Facing is entering his senior year in High school. Facundo is going to improve immensely once he gets into a room with training partners as good as and better than he is.

This is my point though. Truax is a fringe NQ and he controlled Facundo. You can say Facundo is going to make a huge jump, but that's just guessing. My point is that he's not a day 1 AA contender like many predicted he would be.

He's not a Mark Hall/Jason Nolf type recruit. He's a Starocci/Gulibon type recruit. Someone to feel good about, but will need to develop. Starocci seems like a homerun. Gulibon wasn't, but was still a great D1 wrestler.

No one knows anything yet. Declaring that he's not a day 1 AA contender is so beyond silly it's not even funny. Facundo hasn't been in the room yet and who knows Truax could be gearing up for a solid freestyle career. He lost off of push outs, so maybe strength is an issue? I'm all for discussing potential, but declarative statements on someone's college AA status is beyond silly for me.

I agree with the fact that Truax did not control Facundo. He was never close to scoring a folkstyle point. Truax used his leverage and some positional advantages to score push outs. Facundo was stalking the entire match and controlling center. However, on some attacks he had his position reversed and suffered 3 push outs. One push out was directly off an attack where Facundo had to vacate the mat vs. potentially giving up more points.
He is just fine.

js8793 1/20 quote "Facundo hasn't taken the next step that many thought he would. Still hasn't developed a ton of offense. Nice win for Paddy." We get it you don't like PSU recruits, but if all of them were Hawkeyes bet you would be singing a different tune. Wait are you a Hawkeye fan?

My analysis isn't based on one match. It's the last 2 years of him being the same guy he was as a sophomore, which is really really good.

And I disagree. A day 1 AA contender doesn't need to be in the room yet. Hence, "day 1." I think he's going to AA. I just think he needs more work than many people, myself included, anticipated.

Lol, I'm plenty critical of the hawkeyes. Just made posted on HR a few minutes ago that I don't think they look great at U23. I just call it like I see it.

Truax won 74s and did it rather handily...beat Facundo by controlling ties, using his length, and getting push outs. Facundo may have been his toughest match as he couldn’t really secure any real TDs on him.

Facundo beat the 4th, 6th and 7th place guys and only lost to the champ - not a bad showing if you ask me...

I'm getting tired of all the jumping lol. I agree he needs some time to develope and isn't ready from the gate.
