2021 PSU MLAX Thread

Reaume with a goal for PSU go make it 8-8, with 5:20 left in the 4th qtr.

PSU couldn't win a face-off in the 1st qtr, and has been great on face-offs since then, but couldn't win this one.

And then tOSU with a goal with @ 15 sec left on the clock to take a 9-8 lead, with 4:02 left in the 4th qtr.

PSU wins the face-off., but they are denied on the shot, so tOSU with the ball

and another f*%&ing turnover by PSU. it's not as though tOSU has an amazing defense -- most of PSU's turnovers are on mistakes they make.

Hmmm PSU doubles the ball puts the goalie on the crease A. We’ll see

PSU's D forces a turnover. PSU calls their final TO with 1:22 left in the match, and down 9-8.

Foulds ties it up as O'Keefe with a great assist. 9-9 tie, with 1:08 left in the game.

PSU wins the face-off.

Aside from Grant Ament, did we lose a lot from last year's team? We'll have to replace O'Keefe next year, wondering what the short-term trajectory is looking like.

and as a result of his play in the tOSU game, especially the huge save just before the end of the game:

So how's the team looking next year?
Since making the NCAA semifinals in 2019, this team is 0-1, 4-2 in 2020, and then 4-6 in 2021. That adds up to 8 wins and 9 losses. The very definition of mediocrity. 2019 was a magical season, but we’ve not been good since. Therefore, I’m going to say we’ll be in 2022 what we’ve been in 2020-21: mediocre.

@ColinPSU is far more qualified to give you an answer than am I. He mostly posts in the Lions Den, but hopefully he'll reply to your question.

It's a complicated question, as it depends on what PSU loses, what they have on their roster that we've seen, what they have on their roster that we haven't seen play, and the incoming class.

What they lose is the easiest to address, and it's pretty substantial:

- Mac O'Keefe (A)
- Bobby Burns (M)
- Mike Shinske (M)
- Mitch Schaefer (M)
- John Nostrant (M)
- Dylan Foulds (A)
- Nick Cardile (D)
- Brian Townsend (M)
- Malcolm Glendinning (D)
- Cole Willard (M)
- Jack Kelly (M)
- Jake Glatz (FO)
- Colby Kneese (G)
- Dylan Sulzbach (G)
- Gerard Arceri (FO)
- Brayden Peck (D)
- Jake McCaughan (LSM)

O'Keefe and Foulds will be very tough to replace on attack. TJ Malone returns, and Canyon Birch has good as a RS fresh, but most of the other attacks are true fresh or sophs. At the beginning of the season, I would have said Kneese would be tough to replace between the pipes. However, he struggled this season, and Fyock stepped forward (he got his first start this past weekend against tOSU, and played really well). Arceri was very good on face-offs, so he will be missed. His replacement will likely come from Bohn (fresh), Henderson (soph), or Donaghy (jr).

In terms of the incoming recruits, Will Peden (PA) has quite a reputation, and could play a big role. There are others that are highly ranked.

And just as with other sports, transfers could play a big part.

they may be mediocre in 2022, but I don't think the data you supplied proves much of anything.

The 2020 team had pretty much every key player from the 2019 team back. They had a few hiccups early, before the season got shut down. I really don't think you can draw any conclusions from those six games.

The 2021 team only played B1G teams. And the B1G had some really strong teams. PSU has shown a lot of shortcomings this season, both between the pipes, and in unforced turnovers in the offensive zone. That said, with only playing B1G teams, it's not as though they had time to work out kinks, or time to integrate different players into starting roles. In short, as with 2020, I think it's a mistake to draw too many conclusions from the truncated season.

The graduation of O'Keefe, Foulds, and Arcuri would be a challenge for any team to replace, so it's possible that PSU will struggle in 2022. However, Tambroni is a really good coach, and has been recruiting at a really high level, so I wouldn't leap to any conclusions for 2022 at this point in time.

I can draw this conclusion: we have won 8 and lost 8 in our last 16 matches. You are what your record says you are - and ours says we are mediocre. Every BIG team only played BIG teams in 2021. We lost to Rutgers - twice. We were one of Michigan’s 2 wins. I must respectfully disagree with you - we aren’t good, and that’s WITH the NCAAs all-time leading goal scorer. I think saying we’ll be mediocre next season is being generous, frankly. Hopefully, I’m wrong - I want to be wrong!

Sounds tricky to get an accurate read on recruiting these days. The Inside Lacrosse rankings for PSU over the last 3 years have been decent but not great against our peers. JT at least has a very strong track record as a head coach.

So how's the team looking next year?

@Tom McAndrew gave a great recap of how we will look. That list of seniors leaving looks like a lot, but remember, we - and all other D1 teams - were awarded an extra season of eligibility due to COVID. And frankly, our team will be in better shape than other B1G schools loaded with Seniors. For example, basically, all of UMD power is gone next season. That was a loaded roster this year that will have to replace Bernhart, Wisnaukas, and Ferman. It was the same with RU, who has a 7th-year player leading their team in points and got the transfers of the Kirst brothers, both of which were seniors at Nova and Lehigh last season. That type of super-team transfer is likely to be less of a factor now that we can move on to normalcy with transfers. This year was a strange combo where teams had extra years AND transfers were going around like crazy with certain conferences (like the Ivy's) announcing there would be a season.

In fact, when you look at teams and Senior Point attrition (meaning % of points coming from Seniors) - we have 60% of points returning, UMD has 36%, RU has 30%, OSU has 37%, and JHU has 49%. The team that is really going to be a threat will be UM. 80% of their points are returning, and a pretty solid FO guy. UM has some big issues on defense that might hold them back, but a legit team, potentially, nevertheless.

The biggest loss we will feel is Arceri. Okeefe is the greatest scorer of all time, but in games like last week where Arceri got hot, he was able to keep us alive. Baker is a freshman coming in who I believe won FOA at the national level. Baker could step right up and get a ton of reps on day one; with Gallager, Irlan, Areceri, etc., all gone, he could be a big factor. I also don't want to take anything away from Bohn; I think he holds the record in FL for career GBs. Both could step up immediately.

Next is defense; the good news (again, Tom covered this) is that Fyock seems very solid in cage for us. He is doing a great job seeing the ball and stepping TO shots. The latter was something Kneese always struggled with. The bad news is that we are losing Cardile and Peck at close defense. The rest of our defense is returning, both LSMs (Boland and Sweeny), Posey, who is getting better and should grow into our 1 close D, and Funk, who will be incredibly solid in his senior season next year. SSDM will be another Haus year; he has taken most of our 1 SSDM looks with Townsend AND Burns going down with injuries earlier this season. We load back up with Rietano (Bullis) - who is considered the best SSDM in 2021, Parnham (Pingry), and Buono (Malvern Prep).

Offense I am optimistic about. Okeefe is amazing, but his style and presence overwhelmed our team sometimes. Often we would have a dodge or a play run, and our guys would almost freeze to look for Okeefe. This was more of a problem early into the season, but we have guys like Birch starting to play a more diverse role. Next year we will likely be looking at Malone, Birch, and possibly Traynor or a true fresh. I like moving Reynolds to Middie; he looked stiff on attack with a pole in his face. Sickler is getting more and more reps, and while I shake my head at the number of times that kid slips, he does at least semi initiate offense. HIm and Mercer, I envision becoming more of those traditional dodging middies that help rotate a defense and get some mismatches. Peden (Malvern Prep) is playing really high-level lacrosse in the Inner-Ac. They just kicked the shit out of Haverford last week and have solidified them as the top team in PA. We also have the likes of Ethan Long (Calvert Hall), both of which were JHU commits which we flipped - that's a big deal. Finally, Walstrum (Council Rock) is a great pure X attackman who again can supply us with some more dodging/initiating of offense which we desperately lack.

Overall, we have much to be optimistic about next season. This 21 class is our first big one since our championship weekend run in 2019; this class will set the tone for how well Tambroni will continue to recruit going forward.
