2024 Transfer Portal

The numbers will change, but as of May 4th - there are 221 wrestlers in the portal - with approx 100 teams competing D1 with an average of 20 kids in each program, that's over 10% of the total in the portal!

NIL is definitely needed. NIL needs some boundaries. Should it be tied to the limit of 9.9 scholarships. Love or hate the NFL, but the salary cap has created the correct parity in the league.

Does NCAA Wrestling need parity?
Does NCAA Wrestling need parity?

What about putting a cap per team?

Cart before horse.

Need to put first things first where all $s and other conditions are fully considered by the parties of interest.

In my opinion, something like the following would have to occur:
  1. All student athletes become employees of the universities.
  2. Student athletes given time to unionize.
  3. Government committed to prevent collusion amongst universities and exclude anti-trust exemptions.
  4. Collective bargaining occurs where all monies (pay, scholarship costs, shares of merchandise, shares of attendance, shares of refreshments, % of negotiated NIL contracts, etc.) are on the table, and minimum and maximum team sizes, minimum payrolls, eligibility rules, minimum facility, etc, requirements are open to negotiation and to be covered in future contracts.
Only then will the underlying issues be resolved. And of course, the occasional strike will occur, so fans will have to suck up the resultant lock out or walk out that ruins their sports viewing season.

It will also likely result in a stratification of sports levels, similar to professional major and minor leagues with different negotiated agreements.

And there would be no guarantee that a particular sport or university team survives.

Arbitrary caps would likely be seen as violating the current Supreme Court decision related to NIL. So they are a non-starter.

Michigan is the leader in buying one-year rentals. At some point, guys already in the room will resent high-priced transfers coming and going while they get a pittance.

I don't know if this is the case with Cam, but it's not a good look when a legacy 4-year starter walks out the door.

Obviously, this is an issue for coaching staff everywhere, not just in Michigan. Bagmen with big egos do not always consider how their additions might change the culture in the room. If it gets out of hand, they can make a coach's job harder, not easier.

I was thinking maybe Beau Mantanona was beating him in the room and he didn’t want to go up or sit his final year?

Reads a little like Iowa fans saying PSU wrestlers will eventually get sick of being recruited over.

It could be as simple as Amine graduated, can’t get into a UM grad program of choice and wants to wrestle another year🤷‍♀️
Could very well be the case. Saw a Tweet somewhere that Amine entering the portal was admissions related.

You don't think it's a potential problem?

Coaches have more than just developing their kids now. How NIL affects the culture in the room better be on their radar.

I don't know Cam's situation, but it struck me as odd that any member of the Amine family would wrestle anywhere other than Michigan.

Last year, teams 2-9 finished within 12 pts of each other.

And the NFL salary cap is not a good example. First, unlike NIL, salaries are not guaranteed even year-to-year. The only NFL player in history with a fully guaranteed contract is DeShaun Watson -- that's never happening again. Second, in the NFL, teams are on the hook for cap hits for years after players are cut or traded or retired.

Speaking of which, NFL players get traded and cut. Is that what we want in college athletics?

As I understand NCAA NIL rules (limited as they are), they only apply to the period of time that student athletes are eligible. Once eligibility has passed, the NCAA has no role to play. If this understanding is correct, NIL bag $ numbers absent a payoff period, aren't very useful.

To a booster and student athlete, $500k in one year vs $50k over ten years, makes quite a difference from both cash flow and income tax implications. Yet both could be referred to as a $500k offer. I would think justifying services for $50k in a year would be much easier from an NCAA compliance standpoint for a 1-year senior than $500k. I think any enforcement of pay commensurate with going rate for services rendered for a remaining $450k (after NCAA eligibility has been exhausted) would be completely out of reach of NCAA compliance enforcement.

Is there something I don't understand about this? Contract details are not public. I don't see the difficulty of a $250k to $500k bag when in fact it's spread over many years to help a student athlete transition to life after competition, especially given the depth of big donors or NIL collective pockets and corresponding investment performance.

My thinking on this lines up with yours. NIL is going to cause these sorts of headaches for coaches. It's inevitable....

We saw this play out with the football team recently. Lambert-Smith saw himself as the alfa in the room, and it didn't sit well when Fleming arrived with better market value. Franklin also had to stroke a few other egos to keep them from jumping ship.

Fans who think the current NIL environment isn't a major issue for coaches in every sport are naive.

I agree it sounds like a potential problem.

It's 100% a culture thing, you bring in mercenaries without taking care of your own first? I'm not sure Michigan has all that much money either. Cliff Keen isn't regularly on the most endowed club though their collective could be a factor as well.

Iowa can appease their wrestlers if they're upset and want more (not saying this scenario has happened but they could write Ayala a check if he threatened to leave hypothetically)

how many titles did he win??
You said you were still waiting for him to wrestle a match. I simply pointed out he looked pretty good beating Marinelli in the quarters a few years ago. I did not say anything about titles, but to help you out - zero.

Credit to @PSU Mike for this gem on GIA:

“You’ve reached the voicemail of Iowa wrestling. If you are already a world class athlete you have reached this number in error. All others, recognize that we like our guys. If you want to be one of us as we move forward, please leave your name and number and Bobby Telford might return your call.”

how does it work- I think the deadline to enter the portal is now. When is the deadline to announce a transfer? When do we know what the rosters are going to look like?

As long as T&T didn't offer him, it's all legal now. Any teams "bag man" (like Slumlord Bob) can call them up and make the offer.
No it isn't. No one is permitted to talk to an athlete, or offer incentives prior to entering the transfer portal.
Are you sure? I could have sworn Tom Ryan said the rule changed and anyone but staff can talk to kids now.

His bio on Rider's site only states OSU and PSU with no mention of LHU.

It is kinda odd, so I looked it up. Wrestlestat shows him as "unrostered" in 2021 (His first year out of HS). And he's not on Lock Haven's 2021 roster. So maybe he never joined the team that year? (Maybe didn't move to Lock Haven?)

That would explain why Lock Haven doesn't appear in his Rider bio. He did attend classes at PSU and joined the team.

GIA keeps their lineup up to date. In fact every time a wrestler enters the portal they pencil him in.

The last I saw their hypothetical lineup with 5 or 6 transfers was the odds-on favorite to win it all.

I'm curious too but can't find anything about this. Am pretty certain that (1) undergrads have a deadline to commit to a new school, but don't know what that deadline is; (2) grad transfers do not have a commitment deadline other than obviously before the conference tourneys if they intend to compete at nationals.

The portal entry window is now closed for everyone except those with a head coaching change -- there's a separate 30d window to enter the portal if the head coach is fired, retires, or leaves for a new job--> the OKST guys have another week since Smith retired on 4/11 (though no Pokes have entered the portal since Smith's announcement).

With the Sunkist Kids closing down, is there even a point to having an ASU team since getting talent will be a monumental challenge? It will suck to lose another western program. I am suprised that Zeke let the program implode like this.

Have you ever golfed in Arizona in February? Have you seen the girls on campus? They will be fine :)

Even with every transfer going to Iowa AND producing as hoped, I could only get to 120. I was shouted down lol.
We are only 5 days past April and everybody knows in April the Hawks are good for 8AAs, 4 champs and a minimum of 150 points. So it only makes sense that with all of the transfers going to Iowa, expectations would be increased above those numbers very dramatically.

Hopefully this was sarcasm.
