4000 tix remain for Iowa game

DesMoines Register story said $95 ticket price for Penn State was too much for the local market to bear. School official said they misjudged the demand.
And at PSU, a $95 ticket price against a decent conference opponent would be considered a bargain. I get much amusement out of the years of articles searching for answers as to why attendance has dipped. Most of them talk about big screen TVs, concessions, bathrooms, wifi, weather, etc. The answer is simple... cost. The prices to attend games are ridiculous now, and many college stadiums aren't exactly located in densely populated areas which adds travel and lodging costs to the overall costs. It would cost me close to $2000 to attend one big game in Beaver Stadium. Or I could spend that same amount on a 2 week vacation somewhere. The answer is obvious, but because they refuse to give up the revenues the ADs don't even consider price reductions.

Wrong, approximately 1/10th of one acre would produce the funds necessary. That represents approx. .0065% of a reasonable sized farmer's production. That significant to you?

Wrong, assuming a yield of 130 bushels per acre (thanks google!). One bushel of corn is equal to 56 pounds. So that means 7280 pounds per acre, or 728 pounds in 1/10 of an acre. It would take me many life times to consume 728 pounds of corn, so yes... that's significant to me. In fact, to most people, that's a lot of corn. But feel free to continue playing semantics games, if you want to waste your time... but that corn isn't going to pick itself.

"You gotta sell an awful lot of corn to make $100."
This was your first post.
I have no idea what your second post has to do with your first or the response to it.

He said 1/10 of an acre could produce the required funds. I simply calculated how much corn you could grow (in pounds) on 1/10 an acre... and it's an awful lot. Hence: "You gotta sell an awful lot of corn to make $100".

Is it really that difficult to understand?

Compared to the amount of corn an Iowa farm produces. $100 worth is a drop in a 100 gallon tank.

That would be relevant if I was an Iowa farmer. Since most people on this planet are not an Iowa farmer, that's a lot of corn for the majority of people. The last time you bought corn, did you buy a dozen, or 728 pounds?

Well, that was his point and mine. $100 is an minuscule amount compared to his overall production was his point, not how much you could eat.

Since I made the comment, from my point of view, I don't see how his overall production is relevant. It's not that I don't understand his point.

This discussion is pointless, can we please stop?

Of course it's pointless, as was your reply to the Iowa fan. I'm done.

My point, which you confirmed by referencing corn production in terms of pounds, is that you know nothing about a corn farmer and your comment was clearly an attempt to indicate farmers are too poor to afford a $100 ticket which is complete crap. Farming has actually been quite lucrative in the past decade and the average income of a corn farmer buying Iowa tickets is likely more similar Han you think to those purchasing psu tickets. They are doing just fine and you sound ridiculous when referring to an industry you clearly know nothing of. Agreed semantics, just don't be a jackass for no reason please. Thx

1) I referenced the yield of an acre in terms of pounds, which I clearly cited google for. Only to prove my point that nobody can seem to dispute that "You gotta sell an awful lot of corn to make $100."
2) Of course I know very little about corn farmers, I have multiple advanced degrees, and none of them are in corn farming. I'm not ashamed of that.
3) You clearly have no idea what my the intent of my comment was.
4) Who is "Han", and what does he have to do with this??????
5) Oh, so it was OK when I last visited Iowa city for their fans to act towards us 10x worse than any other school in the B10... but I'm a jackass for making a witty comment about corn? Next time keep your unsolicited input to yourself please.

He made a pointless comment, I had to set him straight. That was the point of my reply.

I am very impressed with all of your degrees! Keep up the good work.

95 big ones are the reason that 4000 tickets remain.

Or it could be the PSU's deal with some travel company that gives them exclusive rights to PSU away games. Other companies can not buy tickets from PSU but must buy them on the third market or PSU EXCLUSIVE partner. Let us be family, i. e. a dysfunctional family.

The vast majority of Iowa field corn is not consumed by humans, rather is used as feed for animals. Sure, there is sweet corn in Iowa too (which is consumed by humans) but # of acres in sweet corn pales to that of typical field corn. Carry on.

From the article:
Add obnoxious fans, crowded restrooms, uncomfortable seats, and most of all, the high cost of attending, and watching at home increasingly makes sense for many. When I first gave up my 40 year run of season tickets I missed the excitement of attending in person, but that faded quickly when I realized I was saving $2,000 per home game (NLC donation, 4 seats, hotel, meals, travel expenses). Still, that is my choice. Others obviously feel differently and I wish them safe travels, good weather, and many victories.

thank god that they do.

Right on target. Ticket prices (plus travel, parking fees, stadium concessions, etc. not to mention lodging) are generating a fan backlash .....and business opportunities

I read an article about a couple alums of Florida State, if I remember right, who started a game day service for fans on home games a few years ago which for a *fee* provided:

> Complimentary snacks (peanuts, chips, etc.) and beverages at a large, reserved, off-site room with a huge high def TV starting 2 hours before the game;

> Optional free bus ride to a tailgate location near the stadium during pre-game with snacks and beverages, including beer/wine cooler,etc, for approximately an hour prior to the game;

> Bus ride back to reserved room for a buffet lunch starting about 1/2 hour before the game; and

> beverages and snacks available throughout the game broadcast.

The alums said that after a moderate initial response, more and more people were opting for the service in lieu of attending the game, particularly older fans. They could get the game day experience at the tailgate, go back and get stuffed with a well stocked buffet, all the while watching the game with fellow FSU fans and drinking to their hearts content.

*about $100pp IIRC, probably more now.
That's a heck of an idea in Tallahassee, especially for older fans.

All class all the time in IC.

Oh God! Oh the horror! I've never seen signs along those lines about the opponent in any of the other B1G cities when traveling for games. The "murdering" going on in IC regarding PSU is so immense. The most murdering going on is in the murder capital of the United States now--actually the city YOU live in--so an ironic word you chose to use ChiTown. That one sign shows everything we need to know. You are a regular Barney Fife in your detective work.

ChiTown didn't say anything about "murdering". That word was used in the referenced tweet which was made by what appears to be an Iowa fan. Self-congratulations in Iowa City about how they're making great bed sheet signs and hanging them on shitty looking houses. Good job!!

Makes sense given that PSU is undefeated, the highest ranked Big Ten team and is returning champions.
I'll give you a break since PSU has not been a charter, long-time B10 member so you may not be aware of B10 history, but O$U has been the most difficult team for the Hawks to defeat. I only recall a couple Iowa wins over them going back to the Woody Hayes years, so a win over O$U is to be savored. On the other hand, Iowa had a string of victories over PSU in the JoPa years, so while your squad is apparently playing much better now, an Iowa win over PSU just doesn't feel like such a big deal, compared to a win over the Buckeyes. Also, Urban Meyer is a dweeb.

I mean, you have lost your last three against us and the last two have been laughers...

I don't think you realize what that sign is referring to.
