I watched my first Penn State game. The Nittany Lions played Big 8 champion Kansas in the Orange Bowl. Penn State trailed 14-7 late when they scored and went for two and the win. The Kansas defense held but was flagged for 12 players on the field. Undeterred, Joe went for it again and was successful. Penn State 15, Kansas 14. I’ve been a fan ever since.

OKLion......interesting to hear this. I wonder if this is the same bowl game my former boss told me about (I think it was). He was in the Blue Band close to the end zone and something happened......not sure on the level of the Stanford vs Cal, but did the band run onto the field before the game was over? Or had time already expired?

I'll have to check with him and what he told me, just curious if you remember some incident with the band.

PS: I just Googled this game. You can re watch the entire game here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr3qKTU2rao

Super exciting game! The PSU Band is crowded in the corner, right next to the end zone, almost in it :). When PSU converts the 2 point conversion to go ahead, the band rushes into the end zone to celebrate with the players.....only problem....there are still 15 seconds left on the game clock....pandemonium. 😄 The officials clear the field and PSU kicks off and wins the game. What a tremendous part of PSU's history...no wonder you became a fan after that!

I don’t remember anything about the band, but it may have been the KU band thinking they had won, but I believe there was still a small amount of time on the clock. Not sure, I’ve slept since then.

For me, it was listening to the PBP on the radio at hunting camp. I’m talking weekends when my Dad and Uncle took my cousins and I up so they could drink beer all day while we all played cards, under the guise of checking on the camp and scouting where to hunt. I was too young to sit and watch a game on TV, start to finish, but we’d listen to it start to finish while playing cards. That was the early to mid 80s for me. Some great teams and huge wins.

OKLion....see my edit in my original post above. I added the video of the entire game. Super exciting. Blue Band rushed the field after the 2 pt conversion....with 15 seconds left 😄

Wow, can’t believe I didn’t remember the band. Thanks for sharing. Maybe I was just more impressed with the game than the band (don’t share that with your boss). My girlfriend was with me that night, we’ve been married 51 years.

In an earlier post several weeks ago I told the story of my wife meeting a former KU player in the waiting room of the doctors office. Several people were asking him about playing football and he mentioned the Orange Bowl. My wife asked him “and we no did you play in that game? He said Penn Statr and she (an SMU alum) chuckled an dads told him she had her about that game so many times through the years. They talked got a while and it turned out that he was th “12th” man.

Side note, upon review, KU had played the last 4 plays with 12 on the field.

I remember my late father and our family watching that game. I was only 9 but my Dad was really excited with the ending! We ended up having PSU season tickets from 1978 to 2003. We started with 9 tickets and eventually ended with 4.

I was a junior at Penn State when that game was played. About 15 of us took 3 cars and drove to Miami. We were at the game. It was tremendous. I remember clearly Bob Campbell's catch. The key was Mike Reid. He took over the game about mid-way through the 4th quarter. He had sack after sack. At the end of the game I remember running on the field and jumping all over some players. Our 3 cars were parked about 15 blocks from the Orange Bowl. We all met at the cars and made the 26 hour drive back to State College with hardly any stops.

Great memories!

Cool story. Is the KC for Kansas City?

What a fantastic history and tradition we have at Penn State! I love hearing all these stories.....and while PSU football is involved, all the fond memories with family and friends is priceless!

Mike Reid was a beast. I remember him coming to my high-school in S Wmspt and playing the piano in front of a packed auditorium. What a talented athlete and musician!

I, too, remember watching that game with my late Dad. Distinctly remember my Mom (now 90) making us a big bowl of popcorn. She loved the halftime shows.
The Orange Bowl was the only one played at night, and had what at that time were considered spectacular halftime shows. People watched the OB just to see the show.

If you don't have it you would likely enjoy "100 Things Penn State Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die" by Lou Prato and foreword by Adam Taliaferro.

Me too......6 years old + at the time of that game. I wish I would have watched that game live with my dad, but maybe I did and can't remember (my dad was a PSU fan as my uncle attended in the 50's).

I am too young to remember this game but what a thrilling win for Penn State! It would have been so exciting to be there in person. JoePa's first undefeated season and launching a legendary career.

I attended both the Kansas and Missouri Orange Bowl wins as a PSU student. Both were great but the Kansas game (the entire trip) was the experience of a lifetime.

As I recall, the cost (student charter flight from Philly, hotel, and ticket) was $125. Think about that.

My wife is a good friend of KU coach Pepper Rodgers' wife. Pepper is now deceased, but I had the chance to joke with him about the game. He was a great guy with a wonderful sense of humor. We joked about KU having 12 men on the field for several plays before it was finally called. :)

I attended both as well. While down there for the 1969 season ('70 orange bowl), a bunch of us decided to fly over to the Bahamas for a night. The PanAm airfare was $25 round trip and we found rooms for $10. Crazy

I was at that game. Man, the mood swings from the fan bases in that last minute was palpable. I remember being dejected after the initial stop and then noticing a ref in the end zone, waving a yellow handkerchief over his head amongst a crown of Kansas supporters (maybe their band), desperately trying to get attention.

HOPE!

REDEMPTION!

I remember being taunted by a Kansas fan under the stands about our loss. He had left as soon as we failed to score. I don't know how he could have missed the mood by then.

I also remember that before the game, Kansas was giving out little cloth sacks of wheat seeds. When Kansas scored, their fans would stand and wave their arms back and forth over their heads like wind through a wheat field. I thought that to be a nice tradition. I wonder if they still do that.

Man, what a great day for a college sophomore.

The halftime show was Disney themed. There was a recorded rendition of "Under the Sea" done by people using some kind of lighting system on the field. It was a catchy song I had never heard before, but it was memorable. I recognized it immediately when it was used in "Little Mermaid" years later. (Although that may have been halftime the following year vs. Mizzou.)

Thanks for the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane.

Great stories from a time when College football teams could only be on TV three times a season, excluding the bowl game. Plus the fact there were only 13 channels, and I was the remote for my Dad! How did we manage all that?🙂

How is it even possible to have 12 men on the field for multiple plays? Wow! Thank God they caught the infraction. That two point conversion was the beginning or close to the beginning of JoePa's teams coming up HUGE in clutch end of the game or near end of the game moments.

Just a few I can remember from a bit later...

-1977 stopping Pitt on 2 point conversion
-1978 Guman scoring vs Pitt on 4th down late in the 4th
-1982 Bowman catch vs Nebraska
-1983 Sugar Bowl Garrity diving TD catch
-1985 Knizner (in for hurt Schaeffer) TD pass to Siverling for TD in 4th quarter vs Alabama
-Giftopolous pick in 1987 Fiesta Bowl
-1994 Engram TD vs Michigan
-1994 the drive vs Illinois

Saw that game on TV had come home from Viet Nam. Except for that 6 year stretch of military service I didn't miss many games.
