True but a huge difference between those teams and the top 4 is huge. #8 would be happy just for the chance to play #1. The likelihood you get at least the best 6 teams (conf champs being included) in is very high would make the arguments less

I’d be less worried someone thought they should be number 8 if we had 5 league champs in the dance. Probably would always be 5 teams to consider for the 3 spots....

No matter what the playoff number is there will always be the first team out that thinks it should be in. The real issue is getting all the top teams with a realistic shot at the title in.

It would stop the Georgia vs Oklahoma vs Ohio St mess we see this year or the Ohio St vs Penn St issue of 2 years ago. It would also prevent the potential of the PAC 12, Big 12, and Big 10 teams/ regions being excluded because ND won’t join a conference or ESPN wants 2 SEC teams in etc.

It should be at least 8 if not 16. Have the P5 conference champs in and the remaining 3 (or 11) spots on an at large basis. It would add only 1 or 2 more weeks to the current season (0 or 1 week if they drop 1 cupcake OOC week during the season).

The lower D2 and D3 football subdivisions do it so it’s not impossible.

What is the advantage of six. Requires the same number of game days. A bye is too big an advantage for a subjective decision.

All these suggestions of 6 or 8 teams fail to solve the eye-test bias. A true championship playoff should be determined on the field of play rather than in an ESPN studio or in the luxury suite of a hotel.

Right now there are 10 conferences playing FBS football. All of them get 85 scholarships. All of them have the same # of coaches. Then all of them should have access to the national championship.

If the SEC is so better than the Sun Belt, it should be seen on the field. The only time I would allow a committee to be involved would be in seeding the 10-team field of conference champions -- and ONLY conference champions. If an 8-4 team upsets a 12-0 team in the CCG, so be it. The playoff is made of champions, not coulda-shoulda-wouldas.

The committee's role would be to seed the 10 league champions, with #7 playing #10 and #8 vs #9 to get into the final rounds of 8. Then it would be 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. No at large teams, no media darlings, do Herbstreit beauty winners. Winners and only winners of actual championships enter the playoffs.

Let the beauty queens play in the Alamo Bowl ... I'll watch them.

I think this would also properly penalize ND for being independent. Disallowing them a shot at an automatic bid. Total BS they got to to sit at home yesterday while every other team eligible for the playoff had to play one last ranked opponent ( except Clemson cause of Pitt ACC reasons). Would have loved for ND to be left out for examples sake.
