8 weeks to the day after it was cut down it is just a memory.

The gambit tree is now resting comfortably in the woods behind our house where it will serve the needs of the birds and other denizens of the great outdoors. It is a sad day, but the memories of its beauty these past 8 weeks will last a lifetime.

Nothing fancy. We cut it outselves 8 weeks ago and the place where we get our trees, Buchahan Christmas Tree Farm in Hookstown, Pa, does a terrific job in growing and maintaining their trees. We bring it home, cut an inch off the bottom, and put it in a bucket of water in the garage for a day or so to slowly acclimate it to the inside. On the day we bring it in the house, we cut another inch or two off the bottom and put it in a tree stand wihich holds 8 quarts of water. After that we just maintain the water level. The first week or so it drank about 5 quarts a day. I get up in the middle of the night (3AM) for a few days to check the water level. Also, for a week or so we keep the heat very low the room where the tree stands (closing the vents). Last week we stopped watering (it was still drinking at a reduced level) and this week we had some noticable needle drop, but the stand was bone dry. Still, when we took it out it looked great. The key to it all is a fresh cut tree and lots of water.
