I watched a few quarters last night. I think maybe because I wanted to see if the 93 Mountaineers could have won in Happy Valley had the two teams continued playing. That being said shocked at the missed FGs from both teams, and further shocked when PSU was held inside the ten from scoring with all those weapons near the end of the game.

Doubt anyone here stays up at night watching old WVU losses to other teams to see if PSU could have beaten WVU them. One wonders why, 🚫.

Then you are a perfect fit for this board.
I've been to my share of games at HV. I've seen you guys play OSU and Michigan a few times. I remember Morelli taking a beating against UM but the score was still close.

That '93 PSU team had all the pieces but it just wasn't ready to contend. Kerry Collins, most of the O-line, running backs and Brady in their first year as starters.

They really lacked firepower at wideout. Engram improved and ended the year a B10 caliber receiver but Scott was still figuring it out and only had 12 catches on the year. (LaBarca was actually the 2nd in catches from the wideout position).

Given inexperience at QB and the question mark at wideout, you could compare '93 to the 2023 team. But this team is in much better shape defensively, the O-line is more experienced and the running backs are already at all-B1G level and only going to get better.

I think the '93 Michigan game, in hindsight, was notable in that it was the game where the B1G officials basically served notice of who they were really working for. All pretense of objectivity went out the window in that game.

B1G zebras actually met with MIchigan during the week and strategized about how to deal with the crowd noise at Beaver Stadium. They and the Michigan coaches came up with a plan and they practiced it. You see that Todd Collins knows exactly what to do and looks at the officials, who then started calling penalties on the Penn State fans (which is the only time that ever happened).

Paterno and the PSU coaches were completely blindsided -- I doubt they expected that the B1G officials would be so transparently trying to nullify the home field advantage and help Michigan win the game, but there it was. It didn't win the game for Michigan but we know a crowd can be worth 7 points, and it definitely shook PSU psychologically. I don't think it excuses the loss. PSU had better personnel that day and should have beaten Michigan, and that's on Paterno and Fran Ganter.

I noticed Paterno laughing at the end of the game. I'm guessing due to the officiating.

It's a myth that penalties were called because of the crowd noise.

Myth? They took a timeout. I consider that worse than a penalty. You are clueless.

Maybe the word "penalty" should not have been used. I knew some a$$ would post what you just did. Posters still claim that actual penalties were assessed.

Penalized with loss of timeout. After timeouts run out, penalties were to be assessed (delay of game).

Yep, we totally blew that game. One of those games you think we are going to win the whole game then are left stunned and frustrated that we couldn't get the W. The goal line stand by Michigan was eerily similar to the '79 Sugar Bowl. I think that is the game that afterwards my Dad and I were strolling in the fields outside the stadium headed to our car and we look up and there are Joe and Jay walking very fast toward I guess Joe's home.

The @ss is in your mirror. Sorry you don't like facts but losing a timeout is a penalty, in any sport and any reasonable person would see it that way. You are not such a person. It was BS call, never seen again.

No, not a myth. You can probably watch the game and see for yourself. They penalized PSU by taking timeouts until Paterno and players quieted the crowd. If the crowd hadn't gotten quiet, they would have taken all of PSU's timeouts and then begun assessing yardage.

Only time in any NCAA (or NFL) football game I have ever seen an officiating crew penalize a team for crowd noise.

It wasn't just the fact that the B1G decided Beaver Stadium crowd noise was illegal, what was extraordinary was that they had made this decision and worked out the whole procedure with the Michigan coaches and players (without informing Paterno or his coaches) -- so the UM players were told exactly what to do.

Watch the game, you can see UM QB Todd Collins looking at the referee the whole time as he is instructed on what to do next. And you can see Paterno's shock. It was one of those many "Welcome to the Big Ten" moments for PSU fans.

That game unfortunately changed the linemen recruiting philosophy. They went from quick athletic linemen to the "big uglies" because of the goal line failures.

I did not know this. Wow what a joke. I guess they were afraid Joe would ruin the sterling Rose Bowl record that Schmuckbechler and Hayes had established.

Anyways I think WVU would have came away with a loss in Happy Valley and would not have finished 11-0 obviously. I think the game would have been similar to 87 or 92. I watched the 87 game a few months ago. Talk about a football game.
