You are making a flawed analysis that freestyle results equal hypothetical folkstyle results. Different rules, different weight-in days back then and remember Pico was fully focused on freestyle while Zain was taking college classes and spending more time with folk. There is no doubt in my mind Zain would of beat Pico in folkstyle, he would of dominated on the mat.
Pico's only recent claim to fame in wrestling is making the Olympic Trails Finals, a nice accomplishment, however he had a very favorable draw with most of the top contenders on the other side. Reece Humphrey, a non NCAA champ that doesn't come close to matching Zain's college accomplishments previously dominated Pico, but was injured and could barley walk in their semi match. Also, keep in mind, USA did not medal at this weight.
Ultimately, Pico has been more hype than anything, especially compared to what some of the other U.S. young guys accomplished on the international stage during that time period. Furthermore, look at his MMA results, he was supposed to be the second coming there also, but so far, not so good.
As for next year, there is no way he just starts competing again and contends for a U.S. spot on the team. He simply wasn't as good as people make him out to be when he was dedicated full time so to think now he can just step in, kick the rust off and be #1 in the U.S. isn't based in reality. His camp probably knows it, that's why they are already eying Mexico, traditionally a very weak wrestling country.
