AJ Ferrari. Freshman of the year

How many #2s did AJ beat? They both got a savvy vet #1.

C’mon fellas. It’s a judgement call. You guys had *four* champs. We all know which coach Smith woulda preferred. This ain’t a good look, haha!

I have no issue with the choice. Ferrari was a True Freshman and had one less loss. I do think Carter beat the tougher opponent in the finals though.
Ferrari took out the tougher opponent in the semis

Does AJ move up to heavyweight at some point.
I sure wish college had a 220. I think numerous 197 lb guys would agree. Including Beard.
Heavyweight has evolved since I saw Tab Thacker win National title in 1984 at Meadowlands. Speaking of which; What 2 Penn State wrestlers won National Title that year?

Ferrari did beat a guy who “everyone” thought would just waltz through 197. Plus a guy that somehow finished fifth in the world.

I’d much rather watch CStar wrestle tho

Would y’all rather cael not take Beard three years ago and get Ferrari this year? My bad I thought Bo was back last year. But it was a wasted year lol but I don’t think even the goat could of known that was coming....or could he?

I think he does. Whenever Especially if Gable leaves. The dude obviously loves powerlifting. Then again it’s not like they’re going to wait all year for Gable to make his call. So unless Gable announces here in the next month or two I’d expect back down at 197.

AJ himself said he planned on moving to HWT in the future.... maybe he was just teasing a matchup with Gable though... interestingly, AJ’s size and speed reminds me of Cassar...

Carl DeStefanis @ 118 and Scott Lynch @ 133

I was at the Meadowlands too. Back when you could get a ticket to the finals no problem. Not too bad a seat either. Times have changed!

Cael had Beard and recruited Ferrari anyway.

But that doesn't necessarily mean he saw HS 220 Ferrari as a 197.

The awards and recognition are nice. Far better, and it's not close, are what the wrestlers become at Penn State, the best version of themselves on the mat (even off the mat) and in the classroom.

I get wanting a weight class between 197 and heavyweight but they’re not getting another scholarship, so that 9.9 would get spread a little thinner. Wrestling is like the Marines when it comes to funding:

“Hmm, is this really a necessity?”

“Look, we’ll work so cheap we’ll pay you instead!”

This plus IDK where people think the talent is coming from. 215/220 and HWT have forever been the weakest HS weight classes -- even when including the guys who go on to play college football.

We're in a very unusual period where HWT is strong -- but 197 isn't all that strong. Now divide and conquer those 2 weights and see what happens.

I don't know either.

220 isn't happening, for lots of reasons.

Cael had Beard, and recruited Ferrari and Braxton Amos. I was bummed we lost on both, but especially Braxton. AJ might be the wrong temperament for our program, but I love the edge and he backs up what he says on the mat

Call me crazy but I think Amos is even better. The kid is an animal and strong as an ox, maybe as wrestling strong as a Ferrari. His challenge will be gas tank down at 197. Both will be heavyweights eventually. But you heard it here first. Despite the signifcantly deep field at 197, Amos will be Ferrari's toughest competition next year.

Three years earlier, you could walk up to the ticket window at the much smaller Jadwin Gym at Princeton and get tickets before each session.

John Smith and AJ Ferrari are 2 uber alpha males. Given their apparent personality mismatch, I anticipate some internal fireworks there that may be challenging to contain.

You ever hear Royce Alger’s story about meeting John Smith for the first time? Pretty funny stuff!
