AJ Nevills to PSU

Very nice.

I saw AJ wrestle a few weeks ago, and spoke with his younger brother, Seth. Either AJ had not yet made a decision on his college plans, or Seth was very good at not disclosing AJ's plans.

AJ is wrestling 220 this year. He looks like a guy that would need to bulk up to wrestle 285 in college. He doesn't appear to have a lot to cut, so while I don't know his walking around weight, my guess would be that 197 would be tough for him to get to. (By comparison, his younger brother Seth, who is a sophomore, looks like a natural 285 lber.)

Given our roster, a skilled, devoted, HWT-only sounds quite good now, even if he'd max out at 235-240 in a couple years.

Good pick up for 97 and gives the inside track to the big prize aka big snacks...not that he wasn't already leaning PSU. Hearing that willie is already working on lining up an epic who's #1 match at hwt in 2 years with undefeated 3 time state champs big snacks v gable stev if he can get them to take a weekend off from football

Flo has him as the 93rd ranked Senior in their class rankings and the 14th ranked wrestler at 220.

I mentioned that I saw Clovis wrestle at the recent Flo National Duals. I meant to post something about Clovis' trip.

The team flow from California to Northern NJ on Wednesday, Jan. 13th. They left in the morning, and after arriving, they practiced with Bergen Catholic. I did not verify this, but I'm told that the Clovis and the Bergen Catholic coaches have been good friends. (Bergen Catholic went out to California for this year's Doc Buchanan Invitational, and halted Clovis' 6-year run of winning that tourney.)

On Thursday, Jan. 14th, they faced off against Paramus HS and Don Bosco Prep -- 2 of the stronger programs in NJ. The meet took place at Bergen Catholic. Clovis, who was without one of their studs, Justin Mejia (2nd ranked at 120 by Willie; a verbal to Iowa), destroyed these teams. If you combined the scores of the 2 contests. Clovis scored 113 team points, and Paramus and DBP combined scored 30 team points.

On Friday, Jan. 15th, Clovis and Bergen Catholic took a bus from Northern NJ to Philadelphia, where the Flo National Duals were held.

On Saturday, Jan. 16th, they competed at The Palestra, on the campus of the Univ. of Pennsylvania, at Flo National Duals. Bergen Catholic got upset in their pool by Becahi (Bethlehem Catholic), so in an odd twist they ended up facing Clovis in their final match.

I believe the Clovis guys were flying back to CA on Sunday (Jan. 17th). I'm not sure if they flew out of Philadelphia, or if they had to bus back to Northern NJ and flew out of there.

Quite a trip for a team from California.

On other little tidbit from the Clovis trip. Justin Mejia injured his knee at the Doc Buchanan. As with many injuries, nobody was providing specifics on the injury, or how long he would be on the shelf. For reasons that are not clear to me, Mejia weighed in at the Flo National Duals. His recorded weight was 133.8. A few coaches, and several fans that learned of his weighing in, were wondering why he had weighed in, as now he was on record as being nearly 12 pounds over the 120 + 2 weight, and thus was limited as to how quickly he could drop down to 122, even if his knee was cleared for wrestling.

Buchanan defeated Clovis in the big showdown this evening.

AJ wrestled 195, and won by decision. Seth had a pin at 285. Mejia was back on the mat for Clovis (still don't know how his descent plan worked), and he got a pin.

Clovis won 6 matches, 3 by pin and 3 by decision. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough, as Buchanan won 32-27.

Really appreciative of these updates. On a broader sense, I appreciate the work you put into this site.

Beyer and Teacher are not incoming recruits at 285, right?

There are questionable weights listed for some guys (Suriano, Manville, and maybe Joseph), but that is a minor quibble.
Can you give me more info on Beyer and Teacher?

What should the weights be for the other guys?

Beyer reopened his recruiting (I don't think he's signed anywhere yet.) The Teacher commitment was reported by Josh Lowe but denied the next day by Teacher.

I think 125 for Suriano & 157 for Manville. Joseph missed weight at 157 twice this year and wrestled 165 in his last tournament ... hard to know what that means going forward without a better understanding of why he missed weight (although I'm pretty sure Taketop has an opinion on that ...)

Yes. Manville has been wrestling 152 for quite awhile. Suriano will start at 125 and go to 133 after Cael inserts Spencer.

I've mentioned in other posts that I spoke with Suriano at Flo National Duals. He's planning to go 125 next year. I promised Nick that I wouldn't be quoting him, so I can't give specfic details of what he said. However, he did tell me his walking around weight. Unless he has an unexpected growth spurt, 125 will not be a problem next fall. (And for those worried about a growth spurt, I also met and spoke with Nick's dad. Based on his height/weight, I would not bet on a growth spurt taking place with Nick.) Also, Nick wants PSU to land Spencer Lee. I discussed with him how he saw things in terms of which guy at which weight if PSU landed Spencer . His response was along the lines of El-Jefe's Total World Domination.

Isn't Nick's brother massive in comparison to him?

I think I saw a picture of his brother around the time that Nick verballed to PSU. He did appear to be significantly bigger than Nick. If he [the brother] was at the Flo Nat Duals, I didn't see him, and the only member of Nick's family that we chatted about was his dad.
